  • Akihabara is known as Japan's capital for manga, anime, electronics, "idols" - otaku culture - but there are other things to see, do and eat. I stayed in the area for a weekend recently, so here's what I did as someone who isn't interested in manga and anime.
    As always, if you have any comments or questions, feel free to ask!

    One thing that really impressed me about Tokyo was how many different large hobby stores there are. Like no matter what a person was into there was a several story shop for it. For example the tower records in shibuya is crazy that place is like 6 floors of mostly cds and some vinyl.

      I know exactly what you mean. Tokyo really has something for everyone. I guess it is a big city and all but there are shops for hobbies and interests we’d never even think of!

    Ok so I had to google the term “Otaku” 😂. Basically is the word for someone who is really into anime/manga. Usually they are socially awkward teens or young adults. So now it makes sense. But hey, I geek out on Star Wars and Blade Runner so who am I to speak. Really like the staycation travel vlogs and “day in the life” videos about Japan. Keep it up 👍

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oops, sorry! Yeah they’re generally someone really into those kinds of things, often to an obsessive level where they lose balance in their social lives. It’s sometimes more serious than lightheaded “geek”.
      Oh yes Star Wars for me too! lol 🙌 Thank you!

      Thanks! The room pictured is their biggest room, so the others might be on the smaller end. But yeah, it’s pretty typical. For bigger rooms you’ll likely have to pay a little more.

    Tbh, the Otaku area is really just focused around the akiba station and several blocks in all sides (with alleyways). But once you get yourself out of there, it's not that Otaku at all, in fact it's pretty chill honestly. Ueno is literally next to Akiba, even in the same ward yet it's definitely not an Otaku area.

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think most think it’s just otaku stuff though. There’s a lot of it but there’s a lot more to explore, even in neighboring areas.

  • @Komainu959
    @Komainu959 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't fall into the Otaku culture but I like anime in a casual sense and actually first started watching it from Viz media of Inuyasha.
    I really spent very little time in Akihabara when I was in Tokyo but I really liked Ueno, I'll have to see about this hotel chain whenever I manage to get back.
    I know you've said you're from Hawaii. Google Jennifer Dounda. 2020 Nobel Peace prize cowinner in Chemistry grew up in Hawaii. Hilo specifically.

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the Ueno area is pretty cool. I don’t spend a lot of time there but I’m realizing there is a lot there.
      Oh wow I didn’t know about, she seems incredible. What makes you bring her up specifically?

    • @Komainu959
      @Komainu959 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barrettish Oh I figure people from Hawaii generally like knowing when one of us do well and I figured since you're in Japan you might not otherwise hear about it.
      And thanks for the videos. I try not to binge watch them so I don't run out lol.

    I still find it weird that gaijin always have to specifically mention not being into anime and manga, as if that's the only reason to be in Japan! I had to so that both when I lived in Japan, but specifically after moving back home to Finland!

    • @barrettish
      @barrettish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lol I know what you mean! I think a lot of people assume people are into experiencing life in Japan because of manga or anime. And to be fair, there are a lot who come to Japan for that.

    • @Mwoods2272
      @Mwoods2272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a few gaijins living in Japan that have never watched anime or read manga but 90% of the other gaijins have either watched or read Japanese anime, cartoons, Godzilla movies, played Nintendo, read a manga or comic, watched Power Rangers. Japanese entertainment has crept into everyone's lives.

    • @Bunnybananabunny
      @Bunnybananabunny 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mwoods2272 Oh I'm not saying theyve never consumed it! I have seen Totoro as a little kid and played some Mario Kart at a friends house as a teen and so on! I even have a Sailor Moon cereal spoon even if I havent seen the show😁 What I meant was that for many that interest in Japanese pop culture is the driving force behind the fascination with the culture and often the main reason or motivator for learning the language or moving to Japan. Even though there is a big and probably growing group of gaijin moving there for completely different reasons who arent knowledeable in Japanese pop culture.
      Not that theres anything wrong with liking anime or manga either, it juat sometimes irks me when Japan has so much to offer and many who havent visited assume its a country for anime fans only!

    • @Mwoods2272
      @Mwoods2272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bunnybananabunny True but as a kid most don’t even know Sailor Moon, Power Rangers or Pokémon are Japanese creations since all are dubbed outside of Japan.

    • @Bunnybananabunny
      @Bunnybananabunny 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mwoods2272 Thats true! I didnt know it either before I moved there! I actually didnt know Power Rangers were Japanese until you told me😁 Its interesting to see how widespread Japanese culture really is in the end without people even knowing it!
