Great vid and tips mate, I've been surfing without a tail pad for 45yrs. I did use them for about 2yrs when they came on the market. I find if you really want movement with you backfoot use wax only and the sensitivity and feedback you get from your board is amazing.
Hi Tyron, thank you for contributing value to my channel. I'm happy to hear you're still progressing. I always appreciate hearing how surfers find ways to progress. Best wishes!

Excelent video , I been struggling with my back foot due to my pop up , apparently I pop way in front , my back food always end up at the edge of my pad
Same problem what I'm facing now with my 6'6 shortboard I can easily pop up but my backfoot always comes forward before the pad can u help me how to fix my foot at end of the pad🥲🥲🥲
great tips. once I popped up with the back foot too far back. I slipped off the tail pad and because my front foot was planted on fresh wax I did the splits. It was a solid day and board went too fast, as a result I couldn't remove the front foot and my body sank off the back with my front foot stuck on the board still. I snapped my hamstring in half. 3 months physio I got back. The sports doctor mentioned he should write a book on this common surfing injury. So make sure you don't have your foot fall off the back tail ;)
Hey Jayson, sorry to hear about your hamstring. It's definitely something to be aware of for sure. Thanks for sharing your experience. Great subject and central to progress. I think its important to move all your feet on the board sometines in the session. Go on the nose and go back, just for fun and you will understand a lot of things. Keep surfing

This video just came up and I am so grateful you put this together! Thank you! I’ve been on my shortboard from a longboard for 8 months now finally being able to consistently pop-up and ride. What I’ve been having trouble with is getting my back foot over the tail block and being able to make quicker and more controlled turns. I have a tail pad with a “ramp” and I suppose l should be focusing on locking rear foot placement right when I pop-up?
Hey Jay, I'm glad this video was helpful. Yes, I suggest taking the time to get your foot placement correct. Meaning when you pop-up take a quick look down at your feet to see where they naturally are landing when you pop-up. Do this on 5 waves in a row and take note. Then on the six waves, pop-up and adjust your back foot back. Do this adjustment when you are already standing. This takes practice but it will help. You'll notice a difference in the control you have over the board immediately. Please feel free to email me with any questions. I'm always happy to help. chapin@surfprotechniques.com
@@SurfProgressionTechniques I will be conscientious of this next time I’m out! I’ll practice this on my board at home too. :) Thank you Chapin! 🤙 I’ll post back here and share some results - hopefully be able to report some good news!
Another excellent video! Question: What are common injuries that surfers are likely to experience? I'm guessing knee injuries because the woman here is shown in a regular stance but her right knee is out of line with her right foot. For goofy, it would be the left knee and left foot. I've learned through dance training not to do that. Perhaps it's just the angle of the film footage that makes it look that way. I researched this question but found nothing to support knee injuries.
Hey, thank you for the question. How much bigger of a board are we talking about? You can email me which will be easier to communicate and I'll respond quicker. :) chapin@surfprotechniques.com
Hey Stephen...Thank you for letting me know. What size board are you riding? Have you change equipment recently? You can respond here or email me at chapin@surfprotechniques.com. I'm happy to help you figure this out. I have a few ideas but I want to get a better understand of the equipment you are riding. Thanks! "Progression through technique!" www.surfprotechniques.com
Me too. Somehow natural pop up always ends up with my back foot in front of tail pad. Sometimes it does end up on it and a ride becomes so much more controlled. It is easy to move a foot when you have perfect waves breaking for "miles" but when you ride is just a few seconds there is no time to adjust on a fast breaking wave. Plus when you are in your boots a foot is well stuck on a Wax. I have a narrow stance and a very quick pop up. I am slim and fit so a pop up happens very fast resulting in my back foot not placed in a proper spot on a board. Things I have tried so far: * Thinking about it just before poping up (some success but can't keep my mind doing that when you have to see what's a wave doing and think about manoeuvres etc) * Not waxing my board in front of a tail pad ( some success but some wipeouts and a foot still does not go all the way to a kick block stays in a front of a tail pad) * Even tried looking down to see why and how to put my foot back while riding ( obviously ridiculous) * Tried to put my hands closer to my torso while popping up ( some success hard to maintain it). * Tried changing different boards just as a test to see if any wide point back boards help as I have to move back forward more when paddling ( same story) I am a fast progressing surfer and 2 years have passed already and like 60 percent of my pop ups end up with a back foot being just in front of tail pad resulting in my manoeuvres not being executed in a good manner as well as a board bogging and me falling. * Obviously tried repeatedly doing pop ups at home on a board which surprisingly always end up nailing it almost every time ( probably because all my concentration is just on a back foot being put on a pad and obviously there no distractions). If you could share your thoughts about this it would be absolutely great. Thank you.

Hey Mike, in my experience most knee injuries are sustained from doing airs or floaters. I hope that helps. :)

How would this be done on a slightly longer board? Would you have to move both feet towards to the tail pad?
