Hey, well done. You clearly showed all the correct steps. Showing the two ways to get the job done was a great idea too. Most of us DIYers know to always check and recheck the torque specs so when you didn't go totally through that part in detail, we understood. Thanks for doing the video.
Of all the videos, including benz techs, this is the simplest most understandable and accurate video yet. I applaud your straight forward presentation!!
Very accurate and complete video. I especially liked the advice and trick of loosening the center nut first, then using a wrench to hold the top mount, while removing the center nut.
By far the best how to replace struts video. Every step explained simply and clearly. Everything shown on camera so that we get a good visual. Thank you and please keep it up
Yo Bro you are the best I've seen yet so many people skip steps on strut assembly which is easy and not realistic or half at best, my knowledge speaks and my money speaks so I like to know all I can and not use so much money to replace already made struts. And if you are putting on fully compressed strut ask yourself how they do that, I know as a growing mechanic and being dormant for a great I want the grass roots how to replace a strut b/c you may be in a situation where all you can get is struts and now what your stuck like chuck, and may later pay more to a mechanic to stab the flesh out of your body, ems, some of y'all better chill and get this knowledge and be glad this man gave us the piece free of charge, organized, and very descriptive. Thanks so much for putting both options in the video, so that I can show my Dad just one video. I don't think he'll mind the music that everyone seemed to be bothered by. It's the technique, after all, that I am sure they all came for. At least it was my reason for watching. Seems easy enough for a woman to do, if only men would let us. I looked through your other videos while I watched & subbed. You have much talent to be appreciated!
You saved my repair job - I have a 2002 and I wasn't able to get the top nut off, but your breaking technique while it's still mounted did the trick. Thanks!
Thanks man! This made me way more confident before I attempt to do this myself for the first time. I've worked on all my cars my whole life, but always shyed away from this repair (except once with full assembly) because everyone I talked to made it sound like I was gonna die 😅 Hope you're doing well nowadays. Peace ✌️
To be honest with me I appreciate the tip about taking loosen the nut up before taking it all the way off and the music is good I enjoy it very much I really enjoyed it thanks man
I do robotics and electronics, I have also learn a lot on my own about automotive mech. Your video, explanation, calmness and easy going are a super plus at the uppest limit (👈not mistake!!!) Thank you for sharing brother. You have two great friends in the background watching you and keeping you safe also, add more points!!!.
You have a very good eye for the details. Thanks for watching I appreciate the kind words. Enjoy the rest of your day. People like you are the reason I love making videos on TH-cam.
First part of your video is the disassembly of the strut. When putting the strut back together I would recommend replacing the strut mount & strut boot with new parts, since the strut mount has bearings inside helping pivot your cars steering system & the boot would help keep dirt off the the strut rod leading to wearing out the seals inside the strut. Also torque the strut rod nut 44 ft lbs, the 3 strut mount nuts 37 ft lbs & bottom 2 steering knuckle bolts 37 ft lbs.
This guy is fricking awesome at explaining, good job, with a good camera and editor, I can see you getting lots of great content and followers. thank you for this awesome video.
Great video Dude. I would always recommend replacing the strut support mounting friction bearing. ( i learnt the hard way.) I had to repeat the hole process the week after. (Friction bearing!!!)
Great video. I forwarded it to my son. Good tips. Wheel under the car. I usually do that. Should do it every time. Loosening the nut on the end of the strut while its still attached to the car. Great idea!! I never thought about that. Like you, I struggled getting the nut off after I had the strut removed from the car.
we have all at sometime , forgotton to loosen that nut prior to pulling the strut..LOL wwhat I do is use the long bar from my 2 ton jack that you use to raise it up...I just position the bar between 2 of the 4 bolts on the top strut mount ..gives me plenty of stability to keep the mount from turning with the strut laid on its side and the bar keeping the mount still.
Thanks I'm glad my video was able to give the confidence and understanding you needed. If you have any question feel free to ask. Thanks again and you're welcome.
I replaced the rear struts on my Mazda 626 before youtube existed. The first strut took me a couple hours because I didn't know what I was doing and I went slow with the spring compressor. Once I figured it out, it only took me 30 minutes to change out the second strut.
The best tutorial video and also a lot tips. I learned a lot from this tutorial. now im able to repair my own car and also to share my videos with all you.
Great how to video. Straightforward and no messing! Nice chilled out style. Thanks for posting. Have mine to do on my Mg ZT, Great tip about loosening the centre strut bolt.
I agree with you the whole assembly is so much easier and safe, plus you get all new components. Thanks for watching and I'm glad the video helped you out.
Very nice, so unusual music, and very cute doggy, actually there is another one. I feel much more comfortable to do this project after watching the film. Thank you, especially for the tip on braking the nut. I'm replacing the whole assembly, but still that old spring should be released (for safety) before taking it anywhere for recycling or putting it in a trash container.
Must agree with a few other viewers. A torque wrench should only be used torque nuts and bolts never to be used as a breaker bar. It is very easy to exceed the design of the torque wrench especially when using a smaller rated to one and knock them way out of calibration. As a safety you should always make sure the top of the strut and the spring is pointed away from you at all time, especially once the strut nut is removed. compressors are notorious for slipping and letting everything unload explosively. Nice video on how to go about both pulling of strut and replacement of spring. Thanks for posting.
First of all I appreciate your comment and thanks for watching. I understand and agree with what you said about the torque wrench. I bought that particular torque wrench from Harbor Freight for $10 just for jobs that required a little more leverage. I keep my more expensive torque wrench tucked away in my toolbox. You are absolutely right spring compressors are very dangerous and every time I have to change struts I say a little prayer. That's why I was trying to show people and alternative way with a complete strut assembly. But, unfortunately not all vehicles have that option. Once again I appreciate your time and you have a nice day.
Stay safe. I was not always so when I learned my trade and had a few close calls. I can still see today out of both eyes due to a safety cage at a tire repair station. It sounded like the end of the world when that tire left go. The scar under the left eye is my constant reminder to be safe.
Hello. I liked the video. Love your dogs so calm. just a small note about the bolts with the serrated shank is they are for camber adjustment. You should index mark them and put them back exactly as they came off or you may see premature tire wear otherwise get an alignment after front end service. Just a suggestion especially if you install new tires you want to last..
Thanks for the tip, that's what I love about TH-cam, everybody can help and share ideas. I appreciate you watching, you have good eyes to notice my dogs. Thanks again.
No problem. That was my first comment for any video I watched. Wasn't sure what to expect. I think it's great that you deal with the job at hand without a long story and still show how it happens for real and not turn off the camera for a retake even though you did the other side. Thanks for the fast response. James.

Thanks! Easy to follow. I thought I was going to have to replace my entire strut assemblies just to replace the mounts, but with your explanation of compressing the springs, I'll leave the struts in place (they're fine) and save a ton ($400+!) by just replacing the mounts ($25/ea).
I really enjoyed your video. Thank you very much. Even though its about 6 years old, Its still very relevant to today's cars. It has'nt really changed that much. Im subscribed now and hope you are still putting out videos :)
Hello! Great video, and i'm hoping you see this comment though the video is years old. I forgot to clamp the spring before releasing it and after trying with two clamps, i can't seem to compress the spring to line up the same as the other pair. Any advise how to resolve this? Thanks!
I realize this video has been out here for a couple years, but it is still very relevant. Your information and technique were very helpful. However, please ditch the music. While I really enjoyed the informative video and I actually did like the music, but it was distracting. I go on youtube to find videos to help me figure out how to do something, not listen to music. I have several different methods of listening to music and I really do not want it interfering with my education. But, Thank you very much for helping me get the struts changed out on my Granddaughter's car.
Well written, well produced and not overwhelmed with background noise. I would have missed lining up the notch. The only thing I would add is - never - put your hand on top of the strut when working the spring compressor. Cool dog too!
Thanks for posting. I have to do this in a couple weeks on a '07 Mitsubishi Outlander. Was trying to get the Quick-Struts but they don't make them for my car. Searched everywhere online. Ordered Spring compressors and struts from Amazon. This video helped with a lot of questions I had. Thanks again. Good Thoughts!
Fred Olivo I'm glad I could help you out. Struts can be a little challenging so if you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks for watching and have a good day.
Thanks for the video. I am planning to get my shocks changed myself as garage is asking over £120. Some videos says it's too hard. You make it look simple. Cheers
That was a great video and gives me a lot of confidence to proceed and save a lot of money only replacing the failed parts.I want to maintain the same ride specs and this is the way to go. My two dogs watched it with me, too. I found the soundtrack interesting. Thanks for the help.
Great video, I bought a set of those compressor springs 20 years ago, used about twice, but they do work well. I've picked up some good tips here, all the best from Glasgow
deasttn I think it is a better deal to rent them because you can return them when you're done. Let me know how the job turns out and thanks for watching.
Hey, thanks for the video. The steering knuckle on my 2000 Grand Prix does not go down far enough to line up with the 2 strut bolts. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
Quick question I ordered struts last night without shocks so can I take off the old struts disassemble the shocks and put them together with the new struts
Enjoyable and informative video both ways. Your voice is soothing and the music is not too distracting. Unfortunately, plan to buy the whole assembly since it's so rusted except the coil spring. The rubber piece is worn and torn on both front side and driver side there are 2 zip ties ( just discovered after a DIY brake job) holding the strut bottom in place.
Thanks for watching I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Yes, I know this was early in my TH-cam career and the music was a little loud. I appreciate you seen it in such a nice way. You have a nice day.
Thanks..great tutorial.. Does the top mount have a bearing ?? Should that be replaced and do you need an alignment afterwards.?I didnt see you mark the camber ?
Definitely it is advised to get an alignment after any suspension alteration. Using the complete strut assembly there are no markings need to be done. I didn't mark the camber because I went and got it aligned. Thanks for watching I appreciate your time and comment.
THANK YOU!! Super helpful! Great music too, though I really like that you also did a music-free one that I can use when I need to. Now I feel like I can change my struts with confidence!
The top bolt on the bottom of the strut should have a slight cam on it for alignment. If you mark the position of the bolt head you can get the alignment roughly where it was originally. Of course, you still need to have the alignment done, but it should help to keep things close.
Not always. You need to check before you pull it all apart. Some, like the Chrysler Town and Country I did last week do not have any way to adjust for camber and are just straight round bolts. If the one you are doing has camber adjustment mark their placement so you can put them back where they were and save your alignment setting. DON'T Use a paint marker, it will come off. Strike a chisel mark into the steering knuckle and the bolt to be sure.
Nicely done, thank you. that method of torquing is exactly what my dad used, I have stripped many a bolt / nut that way so I bought a torque wrench. I am doing my 98 buick so needed to see how to do it, looks like something even I can do, thanks again.
just snug it up b4 you remove the compressors..install the strut in its mounts...THEN, securely torque that strut nut when its in car..use a torque wrench on all the mounts
Thanks great video, thanks for taking time to do it.I have been quoted $800-$1000 by 4 different shop to supply and fit.I will be doing it myself cheers Paul
That's what I like to hear, I'm glad you found the video that helpful and I'm glad I could save you some money. Thanks for watching and let me know how it turns out.
My vehicle, I cannot purchase them fully assembled and I don't have spring compressors, so I got to put my back on the car. Thanks for the how-to video, but not the music LOL
I just got 120 volt 220 ft lb electric impact driver, that gets the nuts off, I will do this job without spring compressor, over the weekend when I have some more patience✌️
Yeah, that was interesting that they did stay that long. In other video they walk in front of the camera or come and sit on what ever I'm working on. The big one is Peaches and the smaller one's name is Coco
Thumbs up for sliding the tire under the car. I've had jack stands collapse and also sink into the ground. Having a tire under the car can save your legs, or your life.
Cool ,easy going review brother! One Critical safety point is to Always do the job with that strut laying down on its side and with the top pointed Away from You!.. anytime I see someones head hovering over a loaded high tension spring, I cringe..One slip of those compressers on the spring and it could end you... just lay it down and point the top away and if the damn thing slip off the spring, it'll shoot across the garage but you'll be fine..Ive see some dudes lay it down with the top end pointed at their groin while they try to screw the top nut on! no more needs to be said there LOL
Thanks for catching that and you're right. I will be adding to the video make sure you tighten the center all the way to spec's first before taking the clamps off
it's not unsafe- in some cars, it's easier to wait until the weight of the car is on the strut, then tighten the top nut down. As long as the nut is threaded down to the point where the threads of the strut rod show even to, or above the top of the nut- you're fine.
got a tip for you.. when ever you hit a bolt out with a hammer you should leave the nut on and hit the nut so you dont damage the threads on the bolt. cheers good video.

Hey, thanks for the video. The steering knuckle on my 2000 Grand Prix does not go down far enough to line up with the 2 strut bolts. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks.
BEST INSTRUCTIONAL I HAVE SEEN YET !!!
Thanks I really appreciate the compliment. I also appreciate the fact you watched and took time to leave a comment.
Well done, like how you demonstrated at the end that mounting bearin was working
thanks watched 10 videos looking for the one bit of info you had it and I'm back on the job
Very nice! Love the tip about loosening the strut head while still in the car. Thanks!
You're welcome and thanks for watching. Let me know how it goes.
Your dog is just sat on the corner and listening to you.
Like the muzic one of the best videos for installing struts with hand tools ....helped me alot thanks
Most well behaved dogs I've ever seen. In anybody else's house they'll be then help rocket launch that spring.
Good video, very informative. There are parts where what you are saying is drowned out by the music though. Thanks for making this video.
Great video man, crazy how bad the old struts were!
Thanks and I know they were pretty bad.
oxmanagain check this out, I'm working on the same
oxmanagain wait, can't upload pics.... But that's why I saw your vid. Will post when I'm done
I love seeing people work on cars with no rust
What little impact is that? Its pretty dope
That is my 12-volt drill and impact driver set from sears. It's a craftsman. Had that thing for years still use it often.
THANK YOU!! Super helpful! Great music too, though I really like that you also did a music-free one that I can use when I need to. Now I feel like I can change my struts with confidence!
Kurt Shapiro You're welcome and thanks for the comment. I appreciate the support. Have a good day.
Your dogs are great, and thank you for the video. I learned a lot. Have a great day.
Haha, thanks for watching, a lot of people see the dogs. Good eyes.
Even the dog knew what was up at 6:57 he didn't want any smoke from that top nut coming off. Haha good boi
Nicely done, thank you. that method of torquing is exactly what my dad used, I have stripped many a bolt / nut that way so I bought a torque wrench.
I am doing my 98 buick so needed to see how to do it, looks like something even I can do, thanks again.
Thanks for the nice words and for watching, good luck on the 98 Buick.
This video is exactly what I needed.
1 Question though: When you're done adjusting the top mounting bracket, do you tighten the top bolt afterwards?
Good question, I would tighten the bolt before you take off the compressors and then check it once it's back in the car. Thanks for watching.
just snug it up b4 you remove the compressors..install the strut in its mounts...THEN, securely torque that strut nut when its in car..use a torque wrench on all the mounts
Grate video explaining the spring compressor.
yo you have all the classic instrumentals. takes me back
6:59 when the nut is taken off, Fang the Wonder Dog, "Dude, I'm OUTTA HERE!" :)
I love your dog just watching you work.
They always watch. Thanks.
Love the dogs and how they just hang out and watch. Mine always get up in the middle of everything LOL what are their names?
Yeah, that was interesting that they did stay that long. In other video they walk in front of the camera or come and sit on what ever I'm working on. The big one is Peaches and the smaller one's name is Coco
Did those KYB struts ride good? How long did they last? I need to replace my Camry's oem ones. 84K miles they are cluncking.
good instructor. thanks i really understood how to do the job now.
Just what I needed to see. Thanks.
Excellent video. Thank you. I have been hesitant to do this job but you make it look manageable.
You're welcome and thanks for watching.
Thanks very much. Great tip on breaking that top nut first.
Personally, I could do without the background music.
TH-cam is all about getting tips and people helping each other. I agree, the music was loud, it was early in the TH-cam Journey. Thanks for watching.
Great well-made video. I am going to change mine out this month.
Thanks and let me know how they turn out.
so you've tighten the centre nut by hand? is that safe?
Thanks for catching that and you're right. I will be adding to the video make sure you tighten the center all the way to spec's first before taking the clamps off
it's not unsafe- in some cars, it's easier to wait until the weight of the car is on the strut, then tighten the top nut down. As long as the nut is threaded down to the point where the threads of the strut rod show even to, or above the top of the nut- you're fine.
When installing the center nut, how do you know how far to thread it on?
I used a torque wrench off camera.
break the top nut while still mounted is a great detail. thanks
got a tip for you.. when ever you hit a bolt out with a hammer you should leave the nut on and hit the nut so you dont damage the threads on the bolt. cheers good video.
You're right, I normal do that. Thanks for the the reminder and for watching.
What did you use if not
spring compressors ?.
You can reuse the same springs From the old strut on the new one??
if you feel your Springs are in good condition you can reuse them.
Smart guy, you make it look so easy. Nice tips!
thank you great video you may have saved my life. I had no idea about the dangers of the shock.
You're welcome and I'm glad I could help.
