Diamond Blade from Home Depot - Does it cut petrified wood?

I had a large petrified wood log that I dug a while back just laying around and I really wanted to see how it looked beyond it's ugly rock crust.
So, using a gift card, I went to Home Depot and bought a set of 4.5" blades for an angle grinder to try out.
It was an interesting experience.

Oh man, that cutting was super painful to watch but you got it done! Good work! Hope it polishes up nicely!
It was painful to watch myself lol I would have rather have a clean cut and could have probably used any other rock to try this on but hey...I wanted to see what was on the inside of that log.
I did test out one of the other pieces I broke off and it should give a decent polish despite the hardness variation of the material.

I've got a large piece of obsidian that I've been meaning to practice using the polishing pads on. May wait for warmer weather to continue it as I started on it a couple years ago and just got distracted with other projects 🙂

I've been using the pads to polish my specimens for a couple of years now. I've been happy with them but would love to add a flat lap. Cheers!
They are pretty great tools for the space and the money.
I too would love a flat lap...I have a project that I would love to do but it would require a flat lap for more flat surfaces.

Did you notice how ribbed or notched blades have a tendency to chip out leading and trailing edges
Yeah, not the cleanest cuts but that's okay...and it is extra work but it usually works out in the end.
@@WorldofRockhounds Apologies, I was asking to see if it only happens to me when I use them, as maybe I was using them wrong, but if it happens to others then maybe a design flaw
Nice video! It's always interesting to see how folks use different tools to get the results that they do. I've often been curious about getting blades from big box stores. When my blades dull, I might have to try it out. Otherwise, I always like to support local storefronts. The closest one I have is Kingsley North, so I'm glad to see that you support them! I have a 25lb Petoskey stone I've been meaning to polish up. I'll have to use your technique there!!

I think I bought the hard disk grinder from them but it's been so long, I can't remember if I had gotten it from them. Either way, I know they sell the proper tools for our trade :)

Gorgeous piece of wood!!! Was kinda brutal to watch and painful for you too also, trying to cut into it with the angle grinder. You did your best considering tools you have in video. I only have my tile saw and angle grinder to use. I thought you did a fantastic job cleaning it up and polishing the rest. I use those same tools on my angle grinder, so I had utmost faith in you....lol, plus you've already gained status as a polishing wizard 😁
Yeah, it was painful to have to make such rough cuts but hey...at least it was worth it haha

Great video! The end result is stunning 🤩. That is such a giant piece of pet wood! I started with a 4 1/2 wet table saw. No one told me the depth of cutting was half of the measurement. 🤦♀️. I quickly moved up to a 10”, when my step dad offered me his. ❤️. I can’t help but want a saw that cuts a full 10” depth 😆😆. Ive got some whoppers like your pet wood that are just sitting in a pile. Maybe I’ll try my husbands angle grinder too!

Thank you! and I figured it would have been around half the cutting size but it ended up being less than I had though because of the size of the nut holding the blade on!
I think we all want a big saw that cuts big pieces. I think a 30" saw should be sufficient :P

I’ve thought about using an angle grinder as a flat lap
It's a good starting tool. I've seen other channels use it as a flat lap and got amazing results with it.
That wood is asking to be sliced up and made into coasters.
I think if it could be stabilized, it would make amazing large coasters!
I wonder what sandblasting the surface would look like when it was done.
That's an interesting idea! I should try that someday.
The petrified log looks great! I'm curious -- what do you use for a grinder? Does it have a built-in water feed, or is that something you bodged up?

The angle grinder has a built in water fed tube that hooks up to a hose and works well with the pads. Not so much with a cutting disk - hence why I was using a hose in the video :)
Found your channel through Lapidary Dave and I dig it so far. My wife and I are just getting into Lapidary and we are also in Oregon (Kfalls). I have a large tile saw and was wondering if the stock blade is fine for cutting rough or should I upgrade to a better one. Also, In one of your videos you talk about your cabber from Springfield, OR. Are they still around?

I've never bought a tile saw before so I'm not versed enough in what comes with the machine. Check to see if the manual instructs on what you can cut with the blade and go from there since cutting brick and tiles is considerably softer than cutting agates, petrified wood, and jaspers. If it were me, I would invest in a proper lapidary blade for a bigger machine.
That cabbing machine is still made out of Springfield. The rock shop here in Corvallis actually works with the gentlemen that makes them. I'm not sure how many they still have on hand but you can always reach out to him to see if there any available.

I just checked Kingsley North (KN) and the pricing pretty comparable for their machines.
They have the machines with the 6" wheels at different prices - one with the Kingsley North brand wheels and the higher price point is with the Nova Wheels. I haven't used the KN brand wheels so I can't compare them to the Diamond pacific Nova Wheels but I personally like the Nova wheels and the results I get.
I think it just depends on their inventory at the time of writing this comment too.
I would love to get on of their machines. Agate Dad and Michigan Rocks recently got one of the KN machines and I like the design of it. Similar to that of the blue cabbing machine with just a few differences.

Do you have a link for the polish pads you use on your angle grinder? I see there are so many made by that company. Also, what is the last pad you use for the final polish?

And what I have done is I took the extra time to make a little berber carpet wheel for the angle grinder and used cerium oxide with that to get a nice polish after the 3k disk. The only stage I don't have is the 6k disk - mainly because when I bought the angle grinder, it already came with the disks and it only came with the 3k disk.
