This 1971 Cutlass Supreme Convertible is When Oldsmobile Got It Exactly Right

  • 1971 was a very good year for the Cutlass Convertible - Oldsmobile sold twice as many as they did in 1970, and it outsold the combined number of Buick Skylarks, Chevrolet Malibu, and Pontiac LeMans Convertibles - cars with a lower sticker price that rode the same platform.
Why? I think it's because Olds got the formula exactly right, with beautiful styling, and excellent choice of engines, and very effective marketing. The Cutlass was the perfect car for people who wanted to feel a bit upper crust, but didn't want to get the neighbors talking. It had quality from stem to stern, looked terrific going down the road, and had a lovely driving quality. This led to sales, and plenty of them.

When I was 18 I had a girlfriend who owned a ‘71 Cutlass convertible. The early ‘80’s was a great time to be alive.

I can imagine going into a car dealership and chatting to Bill about a car, 45 minutes later I pretty much forgot what I went into the dealership for 😂

I had a 70 Cutlass. Hands down funnest car I ever had. Took all the abuse a young man could dish out and never gave up.

Such a beautiful piece of machinery! My dad bought nothing, but Oldsmobile. Used to say they were the gentleman's hot rod!

Manson was in fact released from prison (and to the mortuary) in 2017

Bill: "I don't want to do any more forty-eight-minute videos!" So he does a forty-three-minute video. 👀

Great to have a second video this week Bill! Always like to hear the weather and humidity, the animal reconnaissance and who stole the whiskey? Best car channel too!

What an absolutely stunning machine! I was born a year later in 1972, so clearly curiously classic people like us just aren't made anymore.

Love me a 71 Cutlass. My dad had one as his first car, and it’s one of my all time dream cars

"This is just a lovely boulevard cruiser"... Then goes 100 on the freeway. 👍This is how you do it. Thanks Bill.

Your criticism of Dalton is hilarious. And I love that you show a picture of him while your doing it. He must be aware that you do this… yet he continues to slack on the detailing. He must not care.
