    This is one of those rare designs that I like just as much now as I did when it debuted. Nice lights, a little too much Pontiac cladding, but a smooth and sleek body. The coupes were pretty also.

    What a Friday night find! Bill reviewing one of my favorite cars: the Olds Cutlass...and from a time I’d skipped over in the car universe. It’s a fine looking car: love the sinister front end & the linear headlight pods. Olds did a pretty good job on that interior: good rear leg room & a decent looking dash + surprisingly, full gauges. Not a fan of the rear tail lights but the top down option is what scores points. Sleek design overall. Too bad she doesn’t have more horses but then again, what would you really do with them in a front driver?

    To put things in perspective, when this car was new the very first Mustang was a 29 year old car. Cars from the sixties were absolutely antiques in the 90's. The only sixties cars that were still on the road in the 90's were hot rodded collectibles. It goes to show how good 90's cars are. I still see them on the road in respectable numbers (despite "Cash for Clunkers"), unmodified and barely maintained, used as daily drivers by people without much money. In the 90's you would rarely see anything earlier than the 80's in common usage.
    I've always liked the 90-95 Cutlass, and thought the handle bar was pretty cool. It reminded of the one on the 1st gen Dodge Viper. I hope this one finds a good forever home.

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-tb7rn1il3q No I think the 90s was peak reliability for the most part. My theory on this is that the 90s were a confluence of good baseline technology (such as fuel injection) but without strict CAFE standards driving the automakers to make really questionable design decisions and over complicate the engines and transmissions. CAFE standards were frozen for a solid 20 years from like 1985 to 2005 and in that time frame reliability and power went up substantially. But when CAFE started tightening you really started to see problems that we are still dealing with today. Perfect example is the active fuel management or similar system. Or low tension rings causing oil consumption. Or oil sludge due to excessive oil temps. Direct injection/turbo issues. Complicated transmission designs. Etc.
      I would argue that the most reliable engines ever made came out of the 90s.

    • @user-tb7rn1il3q
      @user-tb7rn1il3q 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kevin9c1 The facts and my experience do not back that up. Reliability had increased a lot in the 90s, but it continues to improve. I owned a 96 Blazer that was total junk. Hondas and Toyotas were just starting to become reliable, but still had a bunch of issues. I remember people saying that port fuel injection and DOHC engines would never be reliable. A new technology comes out and reliability drops initially, the bugs are worked out, the design is tweaked over time, and it becomes even more reliable than the technology it replaced. There is nothing inherently unreliable about turbos, displacement on demand, direct injection, low tension rings, or low rolling resistance tires. Most manufacturers have figured things out. Warranty repairs are increasingly rare on new cars. GM 4 speed automatic transmissions of the 80s and 90s were anything but reliable. Japanese cars of the 80s loved to blow head gaskets, etc. I could go on forever. On modern cars when there is an issue it’s usually a bad supplier.

    • @kevin9c1
      @kevin9c1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-tb7rn1il3q Yeah I think there are certainly exceptions to my comment. But I think it works in more cases than it doesn't. Many equivalent engines got less reliable after the 90s, not more reliable. And I think this works for Japanese, American and German powertrains. By the way, I thought I would clarify that I am just talking engines and transmissions here. Other electronics are a whole other category and frankly that has gotten way out of control.

    • @Gr8thxAlot
      @Gr8thxAlot 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@user-tb7rn1il3q I'd agree with this. Listen to "The Best of Cartalk" from the 80's and 90's, and it's surprising to hear about all the problems those cars had. But, thinking back, my 80's and early 90's cars were always in the shop. My 2009? It's only been in the shop for recalls, nothing else. It's had a few odd plastic things break and need replaced, but that's easy DIY. I'd have to think business is tougher now for independent garages.

    There was a lot of abuse heaped at GM for the door-mounted seatbelts. While they looked stupid and were terrible to use as a passive restraint, they were miles better than the stupid motorized shoulder belts in other vehicles at the time, since they could just be used normally as regular seatbelts. Of course, if GM hadn't pissed away untold billions on the Saturn experiment, maybe they could've put airbags in these from the outset and skipped the door-mounted seatbelts altogether.
    The 3.1 was not a bad motor, though the 3800 was the superior engine in all respects. The Cutlass Supreme also had the best dash layout, as they weren't messing around with the stupid half-width radio controls in the other early 90's GM-10 platform cars. This is one of the better 1st gen GM-10 vehicles built, and this example is pristine!

    I echo all your sentiments on the Cutlass Bill, it's a good looking ride. You can't go wrong with a Cutlass, any of them except the four door models in the late '70's. If I had the cash I seriously would snatch that up even in that white/grey *edit burgundy leather, it looked grey.. I prefer the blue with black top/leather.
    My Mother (not to be a broken record) had a black on black '93 hardtop. I picked the car out back then and later I wanted her to upgrade to the convertible version but the Cutlass was eventually traded off for a loaded '95 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD 5 speed.

    Great video, as usual. I had a 1995 Olds Cutlass Supreme Coupe. It was one of the best cars I have owned. By '95 GM had worked out most of the bugs with this car. They added a new interior that was more in tune with the Camrys and Accords of the era. Gone were the hundreds of small buttons for everything replaced by simple switches and knobs. They also added a passenger air bag and the seat belts went back to the B pillar where they belonged. I believe the 3100 V6 got a small bump up in HP and torque in 1995. The car was not a hot rod but it moved down the highway confidently on 16 inch rims and Goodyear Eagle GTs (from the factory). The car was definitely the end of an era. Later in the 2000s I would get a last generation front drive Monte Carlo coupe. It just didn't have the same class as the Olds.

    Thanks for this one, Bill.. I remember these well.. I was working sales at a GMC-Oldsmobile store in South FL when those were new.. I wasn't a huge fan of the "basket handle" bar, but at least it's a convertible. 1994, you take what you can get.. The beer tap door handles were controversial as well.. That's a great example you found with ultra low mileage.

      @@jiggity76 The car was a bit strangely equipped. It was a red '93 Supreme S coupe, with 3.1 engine and steel wheels with wheel covers. With digital dash that later broke and didn't show anything. Super ice cold AC (colder than any other car I've ever sat in including luxury cars) AM/FM Delco radio (no cassette) no rear window defroster. It was a very comfortable car with thick body panels that made any rain go quieter than other cars. That's what I remember, and I remember the smell that I'll never forget.

    If the memory serves me correctly, for 1990, the actual standard powertrain for a Cutlass Supreme was the H.O. Quad4 with a five speed stick. During that year, Motor Trend tested one in a sedan that also was FE3 equipped. It wasn't especially fast, but it was more fun than average, I'm sure.

      Cars and Concepts as mentioned by Bill actually really strengthened the structure with extra bracing and such. This made the verts pretty heavy but very strong and rigid. The basket handle didn't really strengthen the car, wasn't suppose to. In addition, there is a front and rear strut tower brace that helps tremendously.

    Our IT guy had one identical to this one back in 96, and I jokingly asked him if he wanted to sell it to me. Apparently his had nothing but issues from new and his warranty had run out and he said he was tired of throwing $$$ at it. He added that he would never sell it to anyone he knew because he knew it was a money pit. He traded it in for a Honda Accord lolol. Smart man. I still thought it was a cool car and realized it had value as being rare. Oh well, it wasn’t meant to be. I sold the very first "CSCV" in southern California in August 1990; they were a late model year release. Back then our dealership would bring a car like this back for oil changes. While I parked at a Coco's restaurant with the customer's car, two other guests saw it and drove right to my dealership three blocks away and bought one also. I had seen their mid-80s Chrysler convertible in the parking lot. I have owned one 1995 twice. I bought it from a dealer in Washington state while I was purchasing a 2000 Silhouette GL from them, eventually sold it to an Oldsmobile Club member in Chico, California and then bought it back. I painted mine the 1995 Aurora Black Cherry color. License plate was OLZ RCKT. Now it is in Colorado with it's third owner. The '95 was the first year of the new dash and console. My first NEW car was a 1995 Cutlass Supreme SL coupe which leased to any employee for $245 per month for a $20,000 car.

    I Bought A 1994 Olds Cutlass Supreme Convertible in December of 2001. Mine was red with black top and blackish charcoal grayish leather. I love That car although I would Have preferred a different color, not really a red car person since that is my favourite car in the world. The best color olds made for that car is the hunter green with tan top and tan leather. I payed $7000 for it. I got it financed with a good small car dealer in California at the time. I saw it at night when I picked up my girlfriend from work at the time and the next mourning I checked it out. It only had 72,000 miles on it. One of the best cars I ever owned. Will buy another one day. A guy burned down my car in march of 2006, so I never got to enjoy it for a long time like I thought I would. I thought I would have that car 4 ever. To this day it hurts me to remember the sad fate my car met at the hands of another human. I will never 4 give him for that. That is truly one of the best times of my life when I got in my convertible and dropped the top and cruise around California.
