Even though I'm way past this basic level. I made sure to like and watch entire video. Because you just never know if there is something to learn still. And of course, there was.
Hi! I finally found someone who teaches at a pace I can keep up with. :) Thanks for this.. been meaning to learn gimp so I can dump PS for good! This is the year.
My first thought 11 seconds into the video: Why is this video 7:26 long? I watched it and didn't get the answer I was looking for - how to draw the outline of the rectangle! Because I am more familiar with Blender I've just been rendering images from planes but I do need to learn this stuff to be more efficient, thanks for making the video.
very insane. I'd say, that if users needs to make youtube video how to make rectangle in your graphics program, UI team might want to reconsider their decisions. Anyway. Thanks for video, this is so exceptionally counter-intuitive and user-hostile that this UI deserves award for it. I'd never figure this out myself.
Two key combinations are very handy for a fast color fill. "CTRL + ," fills the image or selection with the foreground color. "CTRL + ." fills with the background color.
This video didn't quite have what I was looking for. How to I make a square/rectangle that's hollow/just lines in the shape instead of just a coloured block? I'm trying to do something in Gimp that needs a table, at least visually, and I can't figure out how to just make a rectangle that's not full of colour. Closest I can get is the Path tool but I can't get the thing to enclose/make the 4th/last line
I get stuck when it comes to editing just one axis of unfilled rectangles AFTER I make them. Say I create one like you demonstrate in the video. I leave it alone and go and work on something else in the project and then I want to edit JUST the height/width of the rectangle I just drew. What happens is the lines get thinner or fatter the more I deviate from the original size, which makes sense, because I'm not editing a path - I'm just stretching/crushing a whole layer, so the program doesn't know there's a "shape" there. I was hoping there'd be a way to mess with them like the auto-shapes in Microsoft Word, which keep their aspect no matter how much you move or resize them...MS Paint is not perfect in this regard either, but at least creating a damn square only takes 5 seconds and takes 2 clicks. Sure, I could just use the paths tool, but that would mean going back and editing the path every single time I want to resize rectangles....TOO much effort...
You may have drawn the rectangle on the same layer as your background layer. Make sure you create a new layer FIRST before drawing and filling in your shapes.
Hi. Nice vid. if I want to draw 2 rectangles on my background object, I don't want to make a layer for each (that could be annoying, esp. if I really have lots of shapes to draw). So if I DO NOT crop the layer to content as you show, then I can add Rectangle#2 to the same layer. But then what I see is I cannot move R#2 without moving R#1 with it. Once I color R#2 then it seems merged into the layer. In your video, you draw a 2nd object, but never go back and change the 1st Black one. Gimp may be great (and I'd like to use it) but I seem to still be missing something. Any ideas? Thx
Hey Michael, why is it that I cannot see font previews? I was able to do so a couple months back, but now whenever I type something, select the text and click on a different font, it does not change the font. I used to be able to scroll through the fonts previewing the fonts instantaneously. :/
There's a very tiny button in the Text Toolbar (the options that appear directly above your text when typing on your composition) that looks like an arrow with an "X" in the middle Click this to discard current text information for your text. After you do that, it will properly select and apply the font you're trying to use.
Not sure what you mean by "do only the frame." If you are talking about creating a border from the rectangle: after you draw the rectangle, navigate to the Paths tab (next to the Layers tab). Click the icon "Selection to Path." Press ctrl+shift+a to deselect the rectangle selection area, leaving you with just the path outline. While still in the Paths tab, Click the "Paint along the path" icon to stroke the path. Adjust the settings to your liking.
Got a solution, Create rectange as mentioned in the video and then select inner part of the rectange with select tool again according to your need of width of border and then delete, you have your bordered rectangle
Have questions on drawing shapes in GIMP? Let me know below 👇
how do you make a border? Like leaving the center of the rectangle/square hollow so you can see the layer below?
@@Lomhow Exactly! That's what I need to know.
this is waaaay to long to just draw a square. this video should only be less than 1.5 minutes. not 7+ minutes

This is the year.
Why is it so stupidly complex for somehing simple? This should just be a single click standard button, like it is in every single other editor...
damn boy, drawing a rectangle shouldnt be this hard.

GIMP is the most complicated software I have ever seen.

This is informative and well done. What I'm trying to accomplish is setting an existing rectangular image on a solid black square background.
Thanks Davies, you are the best

Great shortcut tips!
Thanks for the video. SImple and very good educational.
Thanks - glad you liked it.
thank you very much for this concise and useful tutorial
Thanks for watching!
Really helpful. I'm new to this so I've been watching a lot of vids. and yours are easy to follow and very informative. thanks
I can't believe i had to google how to draw a rectangle...

Thanks!
Thanks for this. Very helpful!

Why isnt working at all ? When i put the black box in my rectangle, it does nothing.
Hi, I"m having trouble selecting the rectangles that I drew. GIMP won't let me select individual rectangles only the full layer.
You may have drawn the rectangle on the same layer as your background layer. Make sure you create a new layer FIRST before drawing and filling in your shapes.

takes a full minute before i actually start learning anything... still, thanks for the tuto

Well, it's a filled rectangle. How to do only the frame?

omg dude 7 minutes for a square? thats ridiculously long. thanks anyway
Doesn't work. I only get an outline of a rectangle. And the paint bucket tool doesn't fill it. This video sucks.
7 minutes to show how draw a rectangle.. crazy..
so why cant i just fucking draw a rectangle? Fucking paint can do that?....
dummiest programm
how to draw bordered rectangle? dislike +1
i need that too, but no need to dislike because its not there. I still learnt a few things on the video :)
I also need that
Got a solution, Create rectange as mentioned in the video and then select inner part of the rectange with select tool again according to your need of width of border and then delete, you have your bordered rectangle
i think if you set the fixed ratio to 1:2 you'll have it.
filter, decor, border
