    Never realized that there was a difference in Pinkeye between people and animals. Glad that you were able to catch the calf and help it. Looks really painful and I'm sure that the powder probably burns for a short time. Hope that treatment helps and the calf can see again. Appreciate all your hard work to film this process which I'm sure made the job much more time consuming.

    We had a bad outbreak of pinkeye last year. Cows, calves and bulls. We didn't treat any of them. It ran its course thru the herd in about six weeks. All were ok. As another farmer said: when you treat pinkeye, they get better in 4 weeks. If you don't treat it, they get better in a month.

    • @farmertylerranch4399
      @farmertylerranch4399  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad that was your outcome. Unfortunately that’s not been the case for me (with the exception of grown cows that seem to be able to fight off the infection without intervention). Typically the calves when left untreated will have it spread to both eyes, followed by serious eye damage, then leads to pneumonia which as we all know is sometimes fatal. Could be we have a different strain out here but I never ignore it for those reasons, I can’t!

  • @davidpearce462

    On our black angus cows and yearlings (haven't tried on calves) we take a syringe of penicilin and put the needle just under the very thin layer (just barely place under that clear layer) of the white part of the eye above the iris and place a small bubble of medicine. Then it leaks into the eye all week and it's gone. We also give some LA. That way you dont have to re-treat. It works very well.

    • @gregedmand9939
      @gregedmand9939 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow! It's been 3 years too late but I have to ask: how in the world do you get those affected cattle to stay still enough to safely inject a bleb of antibiotics straight in the eyeball? In a crush with their heads tied tightly with a halter to the crush frame? I'm trying to picture it with a video example in mind of that Canadian vet practicing in Australia... 🤔. Sounds like you producers desperately need a Pinkeye vaccine.

  • @keithmartin1627
    @keithmartin1627 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hated to say this originally but I know it works. Take a handful of bag salt ( get at any feed store). Hang on tight and rub the salt gently but well into all areas and eyes surfaces. Usually better in 2-3 days. That’s all my uncles and both sets of grandparents used. Worked well. I always figured the salt burnt the damaged tissue and caused enough eye watering to keep eye flushed. Plus flies and most other bugs avoid saltwater since it will kill them. Take Clear Water Florida as prime example. The only flies are bought in inside a car. Then dies. All the groundwater is brackish containing high levels of salt and the pools are chlorinated which is toxic to flies also. Reason I own a house there for the family use for vacations. I hate Florida too much sand, no hills, and lots of swampland that jerkers are draining to ecosystems demise. Wow I wander way off topic there sorry but salt will work.

      Thanks Geiger! Yeah every breed has its plus’s and minuses I guess. I’m still not sold on one breed being more susceptible though! Worst pinkeye year I ever had was a couple years ago and those cows hadn’t seen a Red Bull in many years!

      1/16 Hereford still expressed the undesirable traits in my herd. Black white face=hereford genetics somewhere in the past. You are right I think in that the environmental factors are paramount, BUT, you still have to have a susceptible population ;) Good luck with your calves.
