Super GM Wesley So solves three studies without a chess board!

- Wesley So is a world class GM. Rarely do we get to see the thought process of a player of such high calibre. How does a 2765 rated player actually think? When Wesley was in India for the Tata Steel Chess India 2018, IM Sagar Shah caught up with him at the Taj Bengal Hotel and gave him three studies to solve. The catch? Wesley had to solve them blindfolded!
So here's our suggestion. Watch the video as the position is being called out. Once the position is setup, pause the video and think about the solution. Only after you have found the answer, restart the video and go over Wesley So's thought process. You will be able to compare your thinking with one of the best chess players in the world today!

Serious question, what are the chances of a dude in his 30's who is currently at around 1500 rating to become a GM while still holding a job and taking care of a family.
@@undeadnightorc 2000 is quite possible, becoming an IM is very unlikely, and I think you should scratch the idea that 30yo could become a GM. It's not like I want to discourage you, but most GM follows the same recipe. Start from the young age, have certain talent different from 99.9999999% of people, and train rigorously for years.

Wesley is my favorite super-GM. He shows you can compete at top levels without arrogance. He takes his wins and his losses the same way with grace. This was incredible. Thanks for sharing.

I met Nakamura a few months ago at the finals of the PRO Chess League in San Francisco. He was actually very nice, smiled and spoke openly. There was no arrogance. As a matter of fact, one could argue that Carlsen is the only arrogant elite player.

My advice to anyone wanting to play blindfold chess is to iniatially do it with an empty board in front of you to look at. It's a very useful crutch to start getting used to blind calculation in my opinion.
I'm pretty good at calculating an empty chess board. It's when you start imagining pieces on the board that it begins to get difficult.

I was trying to be serious; it will be very helpful to start with. It's not easy right away, but we can all do it with some practice and interest in the game!
Uh, they are on a different level. I am a decent player approximately 2000 but the way top players can visualize things in their minds is amazing.
blindfolded chess is not a top player thing. Any one can do it. And if you can visualize a chess board you will be good vizualizing others spacial problems to, like a 4x4x4 tic tac toe board or non squares things. i think i could solve the first one even not been really good

@@crowcrow760 good for you. I find it impossible to 'see' a whole chessboard, let alone put pieces on it. playing strength about 2000
@@talstory it took me like 3 or 4 weekends to start to "see" something. Trying to think in a method. Im not that good but i try to divide the board at 4. Each one of this small boards are the same. all start with the same color. Than just observe how each diagonal relate to it other (from one small board to the other) all start to make some sense. That works for me. Than you can put the peaces on board like would do on a real one. to get used with than. than move bishops and Knight. than pratice with puzzles and games with week friends

It also opens the gate to more and higher knowledge, so Patrick Liang definitely has a point. A person who is not humble is blinded by his pride.

Very inspiring to watch. Shows you how talented and skilled this top GMs are. I agree with Wesley when he says the only way to improve at blindfold is to practice, overall chess strength is useful but it is not the main ingredient. I find that having an awareness of the pawn structure, squares and tension at all times is more useful than trying to remember the position of all pieces all the time.

Super grandmaster calculate superbly
At 10:00 he mentions it is very important for the king to be on g5 to control the dark squares. Can someone explain why this is?

Edit: i see it now, the reason was beause the squares not covered by the king would either be taken by the knight or would lead to a FORK. This part of the puzzle was insane
It only means that the black rook cant go to those squares. That means the black rook is completely trapped.
Only available move for rook is either takes for king and knight or get forked by knight
One can only admire him. The talent and humility as well.
Wow! That's impressive. After 40 years of playing and studying chess (about 1800 elo), even if my positional understanding can be improved my lack of visualisation in this blindfold format and hence tactical comprehension is painfully apparent and probably not rectifiable.

@@ui6144 GM So became Super GM on 2013 he still represent the Philippines that time. It was on 2014, when he switched to represent the USA. He got the highest title or 2nd highest title(considering World Chess Champion as the highest title) in chess when he was still in the Philippines. Until he become a World Chess Champion while representing the flag of USA, I would disagree on your statement that he did not reached his peak during his residency in the Philippines.
Though I agree that if he wants a better compensation for his talent Philippines is not the right place for him.
Very beautiful studies! Also, the skills of elite players like So is truly phenomenal. But its clear that players like So had formal instruction to learn this beautiful patterns.

Damn, that’s insane, I really find it hard to believe that on average, anyone can develop that level of visualisation just by practising.
You'd be surprised how much you can improve from practising. But you're right, biological factors/genes do also play a part. To reach the highest levels of visualisation (or any particular skill, for that matter) one must get lucky in the lottery of birth.
Its super basic. I think any 2000+ player would have this ability. Solving the problems themselves requires a good pattern recognition and some calculations. But visualizing a variation with 8 pieces is really nothing special to somebody who does chess for a living.
I really think if you give him some much harder puzzles, he will not solve them, even using a board. It would be much more interesting for me listening to his thought process of a real game in his mind.
I can't visualize anything in my head, not even the most basic objects or colors, yet I'm not weaker than the average chess player just making use of abstract thinking.
Nope u don't need luck or any of that crap hard work , consistency , perseverance and than u too will be solving like so or even better. No offense but i don't buy into that born lucky by birth crap. It's bullshit.
Every chess player has this ability. For example, a group of chess mates can analyse particular position - from a chess game or endgame study - without chess board, easily throwing around moves or variants, back and forth. This may occur anywhere - in front of tournament hall, in coffee shop, on the park bench... and may continue hours.

At 7:43, what if black plays Re6, white king moves and then Rb6!! Preventing queening on d8 as this results in stalemate and also picking up the fast b pawn. This results in black trading the rook for the d-pawn, and the black king is able to stop any advancement of the 3 remaining pawns.

@Chessbase the only thing you have to improve is to show board position during live matches. The camera angles are very bad and I have eye sight problems

This was a great video and I enjoyed watching it.
My only gripe is the interviewer calling each puzzle easy. At the beginning, he says they are easy. For the last one, he says it isn't difficult, but beautiful, while Wesley admitted to struggling with the last puzzle when first solving it.
If all of these puzzles were actually easy for the interviewer, then maybe he should be higher rated then Wesley. Else, if he just thinks they're easy because he solved them with a computer, then it is disrespectful.

Wesley can be sharper than Magnus in certain positions. Magnus is more balanced. The third puzzle was the easiest. The first one was the most difficult.
