I always got the feeling that the song was about schizophrenia and depression. A cacophony of noise, emotion, and betrayal from your own mind/senses... one that you have to handle and defeat yourself to finally achieve that inner peace and silence you wish to strive for, to be free from the miss firings and nothingness of your brain.
@@ВоваТНВД The male growls and grunts just turn me off. NOT my kind of metal. NEVER liked that style. I'll stick with the melodic and symphonic side of metal.
@davej.meister5421 Well that is Epica's style and metal. The balance between beauty and chaos. Without the gutterals, the heavy guitar riffs would feel out of place as well, and then you get rid of those... then you leave a big hole in Epica's sound. You make them sound just like any other symphonic metal band with a female vocalist. Epica would end up losing an important part of their identity.
the musicians of this band are HEAVILY underrated,as well as overshadowed by simone.they deserve so much more recognition, for they are so brilliant composers and performers, and some songs of their, such as this particular one,are the proof of that.
you are absolutely right ... I keep thinking why Tuomas Holopinen is the only composer who is recognized for being a mastermind ... Mark Jansen is clearly a mastermind too!!! since he is the one who composes most of the songs of the band.. I don't get it, people never ever mention that. Adam Slujtier (or something like that, I don't remember how to spell it correctly) was very good too! but he is no longer with Epica, but I remember when I started listening to Epica every song I thought "omg this is a masterpiece" I looked at it and it was Adam's composition ... So sad he is not with Epica today But still, Mark is a mastermind as well :)
I agree. Tbh, Mark Jansen is the main reason Epica is my favorite band, he always was, because I recognized his work and identified myself with him from the moment I got to know this band... Simone is a great singer and songwriter of course, but I sometimes feel, as you are saying, that the rest of the band is forgotten and only Simone gets credit or whatever. Mark Jansen is a genius... he writes unbelieveble lyrics, in meaning and in technique. The band is so talented and original, it's one of the few female fronted symphonic metal bands I actually love, because they're different: they're heavier and softer at the same time, mixing brutal and tender melodies which hit you right in the face. Plus, they give beautiful messages, they write about politics, spirituality, religion, humanity, hope... All things good. So yeah, Epica is not just the ''pretty voice and face'' of Simone, which I love a lot also, but they're sooo much more!
In my opinion Epica is the best sympho metal band now. All their albums are very strong and it's interesting to listen. And Simone... she's metal scene Queen.
Yeah they are THE standard for going on a decade now. They did their 1000th concert summer 2018. Hell there are mega 80s rock bands that never made 1000 concerts, its surreal. One thing about them is they are a team and the drama issues that plague and kill other bands they avoid. Within Temptation and Edenbridge are much the same way.
I love how this album combines the truths in buddhism with the offensive drive of metal. It's like transforming anger into striving for better. Spoke to the lead guitarist once, he appreciated that there's people who perceive the lyrics the way they intended.
Maybe there's a third element, mostly in a occidental interpretation, because, philosphy already has interpretations about a lot of concepts they use, like contiingency or this "essence of silency" like in Heidegger or other thinkers. Obviusly we can see the head of buddah in the videos and art work but they are occidental too and a lot of readings and stuff of our culture make us insert elements of our own understanding of reality. I think this occidental and oriental combination is the thing that give us full understanding, but in that level, the silence level.
Ugh. People so easily fall for Mark's pseudo-intellectual new age bullshit. Love their music, but lyrics are (mostly) atrocious. They look like something that an angsty teenager that just discovered metal and watched some bad Zeitgeist 'documentaries' would write.
This song describes my state of mind perfectly. The chaotic guitar riffs and verse describe how chaotic the thoughts in head can be, and the harmonic chorus helps to calm it down. As I continue listening, it just gets better with the perfect mixture of chaos and harmony. The last chorus makes me feels like my mind transcends into the state of peacefulness. What a masterpiece this song is.
Holy freaking crap!!! This sounds millions of millions times better than ever!!! Good Job guys, really good job!! I can't wait to have and hear the album!!
This is the first song I've ever heard from Epica, and hearing it for the first time today. All I can say is "Oh. My. God. This isn't music, this is a masterpiece."
Epica is getting progressively more aggressive with each album, if this single is any indication of what's to come. Better riffs, better drum sound, and overall a more metal-focused sound. I'm loving this
The only thing I would like to see is Issac given more solo opportunities The music is perfect and when his solo comes in it sounds amazing I just wish it was longer and I think he has enough skill that he deserves more chance to highlight that more often.
JoseCom11 And thats exactly the reason why im liking their albums less each time. Just like you said..now they are more like progressive metal with some symphonic influences rather than pure symphonic epic metal like their first 3 masterpieces albums!!! I personally think that doesnt go well with them at all and is making them sound weaker and less epic than other top symphonic metal bands and more average..but oh well I just hope this one is a lot better than the mediocre Requiem for the Indifferent was.
MyEarthDream171 Actually that's a matter of opinion, i think that at the begining they were a great symphonic band but a weak metal band, now they are a great metal band but with less symphonic elements.
Amazing song, if the rest of the album is as good as this, this will be their best ever release. The choir goes with Simone's voice so beautifully Seriously very very well done Epica
BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR SO FAR!!! I've always liked Epica, but in the symphonic/operatic genres I've preferred Nightwish and Within Temptation. As of this moment, after hearing this complete album I honestly say Epica is my new favorite band for the music genre. This album has the perfect blend of beauty and brutality, making me as a listener feel empowered and pumped. Here's hoping this band continues to get better and better. My advice to those listening, buy this album.
Lol... I think you read my mind. Nightwish is still on top for me though. I belive they offer a more variety of melodies. This album is FANTASTIC, and went directly to my top 5 ever, but, they have the same background beat in almost all songs, specially the drums (the beast is awsome though)... That's why i still prefer nighwish... Withintemptation came out of my top bands after Hydra... what a disappointment...
Estêvão Miguel Epica now is better than nightwish,,,since design your universe...with that poppy voice and songs like scaretale they are now a pop band but I still give'em a chance for 2015 :)
Maty Ezequiel Nightwish and Epica are my top bands and its because of songs like scaretale i put nightwish slightly above... Epica is just... amazing in symphonic metal but nightwish offers a bit more... and btw, pop? are you serious? have you listen to imaginaerum????? World wide clamed best symphonic metal album ever??????
Epica is more symphonic and more "metal" than nightwish nowadays. Anette turned them into a pop metal band and that voice in scaretale ounded like a witch...Go broadway xD
I personally love this group for the perfect balance of opera vocals and black metal vocals. And such great lyric writing / storytelling. And I love that they do a lot of music that actually makes you use your brain and think. This is why I'm such a big fan of metal music. And not the crappy hip hop or pop music.
I'm seriously impressed with this song. It sounds very fresh and renewed in a way, like I haven't quite heard something like it before. It's dynamic and interesting, has an awesome tone to it, great lyrics... definitely excited about this album!
Wow, Simone's voice has grown so much since their first album. She's absolutely superb in her capabilities now... I'm glad they went with this song as a single, as well, since Mark never has much of a focus in singles. Very impressed!
And kids, THIS is what a Single is suposed to be, not just catchy, but also awesome, badass and strong, in my opinion, this song exemplifies what Epica really is, If I want to introduce someone to the band, I would show them this song because it combines all elements that make Epica unique. Love this song so much
Corvo Attano It is just what I needed to read! I discovered Epica today... and it was astounding at first: a band that contained everything that I could ask for, and it puts me in a mood that I'd been missing, since what I most listen to is pop. I guess it was a matter of destiny that I found it at this point of my life, with all the transformations that I am and will experience, I feel like it was made for me. Don't you feel the same?
Am I the only one who thinks changing the producer was their best choice in their career? Everything they recorded with Sascha Paeth is painful to my ears... Then Quantum Enigma came, I even bought the CD. Holographic Principle is also great.
This song is more memorable and has better tone than most of the previous album. The previous album was good, but had its moments. Design Your Universe was a GREAT album, and I hope this is too
^Agreed, followed closely by The Divine Conspiracy. This upcoming album will have a Kingdom of Heaven Part II and I am incredibly stoked to hear that, Kingdom of Heaven is one of my favorite songs of all time
Jean-Samuel Garant It's kind of like Metallica's Load and Reload era in my opinion. If RFTI was done by an up-and-coming band, it would be regarded as better. But since Epica is the pinnacle, more is expected from them, and they didn't deliver to their standards with it.
This song is a masterpiece!! The guys from Epica were really right when they said this album will kick our asses off! The album isn't out yet and its already kickin' my ass haha I simply love this band
***** yes, it sounds a bit different from the old Epica, but it would be really boring if they would sound the same as the sound in their first album. Every band has to incorporate new elements into their music, otherwise they might not have a lot success :)
Epica all the way! i like all there songs but damn i'm in love with Simons's Voice In Facade Of Reality Her Voice In The Beginning Makes Me Want To Chillllllllllllllllllllll!
I see this song as an essay on mental illness. The lines like "I can see, I perceive this ain't me" and "Something is wrong, my strength has, thoughts are corrupting my mind." strike me as cries for help from a person that is dealing with severe depression and anxiety. The person doesn't feel safe inside their own thoughts and is angry about it (the harsh vocals) but wants some reprieve from the hell that exists in their psyche (the clean vocals). That's what I got from it anyway, and I love it.
People, please stop talking about nightwish. If you haven't noticed this is and Epica music video. I don't care how much more you love nightwish, okay? If you love them so much go watch their videos. There are true epica fans out there and it's really annoying to us to see a bunch of crap about our favorite band it the comment section.
Epica was formed partly thanks to Nightwish so it's going to happen that and they're in the same genre that happens with other bands in Symphonic Metal all the time.
Ethan Lit Problem with mentioning Kamelot...they're Power Metal and were completely different if you hear their first album they did. I'll agree they'll have to face that they'll prolly be a NW clone but there are plenty over older bands NW spread it around in 2005 btw when the redone Sleeping Sun video was aired (for US at least) there are bands a bit older then NW who honestly owe themselves to those bands. (Leaves Eyes and such)
***** Agreed. Why there is always that need to compare? Enjoy both or all of them, or enjoy only one, or none. These are not against each other if you have funds to buy more than one record. These bands are sharing some elements but are still creating totally different music. I'm huge NW fun but that will never make Epica any worst in my ears. And this tune specifically is a master piece.
Ethan Lit The problem in why people compare is that it's more "okay" within the sme genre vs. one genre vs. another. So people ARE going to do it even more so if both or however many are compared are same genre it's even more likely to happen. Regardless of them being noticeably different in w/e is present or how similer they are. It's silly (stupid sense) it's annoying w/e but it's going to happen. Sadly for most they don't know older bands then Nightwish and as such common misbelief of them being oldest one ever comes up, most certainly not true, but I will agree with those suggested bands as well. Elu is the only one you mention I don't even know so now I must surf the internet for more awesome music. :3
I only ever get goosebumps when listening to an incredible song. I was shivering the whole time. This is going to be the first time I wait with bated breath for an album to be released! Fantastic song and I loved the graphics and how the lyrics were presented!
I love these guys, always keeping it heavy! Who says bands "need" to evolve their music? or, "try" new things. Even though I am very open minded when I come to music, I dislike when bands start doing different things and going softer as they become popular simply because they want to cater to a bigger audience. I fell in love with their first albums for a reason - their heaviness, epicness, the amazing voice of Simone and ofc, the orchestral side of the band. and I'm glad they still make such great music. Sometimes bands forget it's the early listeners and fans who made them what they are today, and when they go different route, it's like they turn their back to them. Yes, some will say "a true fan will go wherever they go" but still, there's that feeling of something missing, or a watered-down music that does not fill you up. And that's what I've been feeling with some bands recently, *cough* WT...
...but over the years they've got a lot heavier. Arien and Isaac have brought in a much heavier side to epica with intrinsic and detailed riffs. I mean hell, that first heavy riff in this song is almost like Gojira! The guitar riffs of the early days weren't nearly as varied as this, instead they were more like the glue holding all the symphonic aspects together. Jeroen is (was) also more of a rock drummer so his style is far less centred round the double-kick etc. Don't get me wrong though, he is a fantastic drummer. However, unlike other bands that say meh, I'm tired of this style or I think this band needs a "shake-up" (I'm referring to a certain band in particular with that quote ;) ) Epica have evolved their style while combining it with a few new elements. They are subtle enough though that they make it work really well. There are a lot of fans though of the earlier Epica (Cry For the Moon etc.) who don't really like DYU or RftE, although I do agree the latter was a bit weak compared to the rest of their discography.
Holy Quantum!! I'm just blown away!!! What an AMAZING track!!!! And this is just a small taste of what is yet to come!! Everything sounds so perfect!! And Simone is singing better than ever before!!!
This is one of those songs that stuck in your mind and you cannot wipe them out.... AMAZING ONE! And this lyric video is just the one that I was waiting for! Thank you EPICA !
Dear Catilina 54 I was listening to metal long before you were born. 1967 to be exact and I have kept up with it ever since. So long youngsters. I have wasted enough time on you.
Steven Richards Music changes and evolves. Old music is still considered good, but there's also stuff like this, which is still good... Then there's that pop shit.
I love this band, i like this new song. I can't understand why others still comparing them with the other bands. I also like Nightwish and Within Temptation. So there is no need to compare.
I love how stupid people bash metal as unmeaningfull screaming without trying to understand the song and keep telling me pop and dubstep is what i should listen to.
+Djordje Stojanovic i mean i dont listen to much metal anymore, but sometimes i comeback to this song, now i mainly listen to dubstep/edm stuff and from what i can tell most ppl tht hate on dubstep can only think of like skrillex or deadmau5 without knowing good songs
Dyomist Coolboi yeah thats how I feel when I listen to a lot of epicasongs. Well pop can have some few great singers (music is often crappy) dubstep, well its fun for 20min then its annoying; hipster music, but its not awful. But I get angry when people say "listen to rap or hiphop instead of metal"! I often assume(hope) they're trolling, but they just have an awful taste. Well there is like very few decent rappers, but the music as whole is terribly awful.
Can;t get enough of this song. When on 1:32 I was like "Wow! Great notes" then on 4:08 i was "HOLY COW!!! How can one little woman's body hold such amount of EPICness \m/"
January 2024 was the best experience when I could listen to Simone Simones sing this song in a concert 🥲😍
Never thought a lyric video could be so epic. I love the paradox of a metal song about "silence".
yes!!
This song speak about the Buda philosophy.
Her seamless transition from standard singing to opera singing is so impressive. Simone is amazing! Epica gets better and better with each album.
Anyone that says that she can't do this live is wrong. I've experienced them live and she's even better than in the studio.

Ethan Lit Watch Mojo sadly has gone off in terms of their knowledge....can't trust too much of it myself anymore. xD
Is not just about metal.. the lyrics are awesome.. so deep!!
As a long time Epica and Nightwish fan, epica has some killer riffs
I have the feeling that The Quantum Enigma will be best album of Epica
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed with WT. Used to love The Silent Force and Mother Earth
...but over the years they've got a lot heavier.
It's insane how consistent and awesome these guys are.
Heavier AND more symphonic at the same time. Great combination! Can't wait to hear the rest of the songs!
I'm listening to this song for an hour non-stop and it does not get any less exciting
«The Essence Of Silence» with the choir ... awesome !
Very very great song !
I can't wait .. !
Truly epic. The band live up to their namesake and never fail to please!
This song and video deserve much more recognition than they currently have. 🤘🏼😍
This brings back 'epic' in epica. I like
Афигенно. Спасибо за субтитры. А то, на слух, не успеваю, смысл текста уловить. Успехов в вашем творчестве!
Holy Quantum!! I'm just blown away!!! What an AMAZING track!!!! And this is just a small taste of what is yet to come!! Everything sounds so perfect!! And Simone is singing better than ever before!!!
Amazing, I like the contrast between the symphonic female voice and the heavy aggressive growls, just amazing!
As a schizophrenic, those lyrics have a very special meaning to me.
Can't wait for the album. This is awesome!
I wasn't expecting it to be so heavy, loving this.
The last album is what I put on when I'm in a mellow mood.
Amazing. absolutely Amazing!
3:06 ... that's so WOARRRGH ....

Awesome! My favourite band!
Imo one of the best songs they ever made.. music and lyric wise :-)
Epica kills again...Brutal and Melodic. The best Epica Release Ever!
This is one of those songs that stuck in your mind and you cannot wipe them out.... AMAZING ONE! And this lyric video is just the one that I was waiting for! Thank you EPICA !
Epica sounding more ferocious than ever. Good stuff.
I love the idea of a metal song about meditation! At least that's how I interpret it.
Yeah and people stereotype metal as being all about death and satan.
probably the best production of any Epica album.
Dear Catilina 54 I was listening to metal long before you were born. 1967 to be exact and I have kept up with it ever since. So long youngsters. I have wasted enough time on you.
Burned! :D
Well, so return listen your oldies and don't bother us...
Steven Richards Music changes and evolves. Old music is still considered good, but there's also stuff like this, which is still good... Then there's that pop shit.
This is literally amazing, everything flows perfectly and it's like something amazing is drilling into my ears.
I love this band, i like this new song. I can't understand why others still comparing them with the other bands. I also like Nightwish and Within Temptation. So there is no need to compare.
Another amazing Epica's song... I'm so excited waiting for that complete album.
I swear to god this is the only song that I fell in love with the first time listening to it
Music flows throught the body as all epics songs do , perfection
Epica is wise!!!
Spirituality spoken through Metal!
Epicaaaa the best!!! I'm from Romania!!!

Please may, come fast!
they got back 2 their roots!
Great!
I am looking forward to receiving all the remaining compositions with great anticipation
I love her voice
Indeed
Simone is exceptionally talanted snger, song writer and highly spiritual person. Epica has a lot to show yet...
+onii-sama onii-sama notice me
Dyomist Coolboi yeah thats how I feel when I listen to a lot of epicasongs.
Dyomist lol dubstep died in like 2013 😂😂😂
Dyomist ikr
I am SOO in love with this. Melodic, tough and certainly beautiful!
can't wait to hear it live!!so heavy
Can;t get enough of this song. When on 1:32 I was like "Wow! Great notes" then on 4:08 i was "HOLY COW!!! How can one little woman's body hold such amount of EPICness \m/"
The Essence Lies... IN SILENCE!!!!!
