In always loved going there, as well we went there pretty much every year from 64 to 67. This was the only year my dad brought the camera though. Great memories!
I'm 74 now but I remember going to POP back in the early 60's. The last time I went to the Santa Monica Pier a few years ago there was a plague in one of the parking lots south of the pier stating that that was where the entrance to Pacific Ocean Park was. I remember several movies and TV shows that were filmed there. Those were the good old days!
The parking lot was about 200 yards south of the SM pier and was connected by a asphalt path. Under a couple of trees and near some bushes in the turn-around was the plaque. I don't know if the plaque or the parking lot is still there as it seems things are always changing around there. I also found a coffee table book at Barnes & Noble several years ago about the POP. It called "Pacific Ocean Park, The Rise and Fall of Los Angeles' Space-Age Nautical Pleasure Park by Christopher Merritt and Domenic Priore and a forward by Brian Wilson, 2014. It contains some great photos and stories from its inception until its demise. It's pretty neat. I grew up and still live in SoCal and have seen a lot of our old iconic landmarks torn down and replaced by generic garbage. Really sad!
@@AllanGonnella Thanks for the info. I still live in SoCal, but am located about 40 miles south of Santa Monica/Venice in Huntington Beach. I usually only make it up that way when one of my friends passes away. I've seen a copy of that coffee table POP book, very well done.
I read where there is a plaque on the sidewalk of Sunset Blvd. marking where Dino's (Dean Martin) Restaurant was giving the exact address and explaining the car port valet area and the small office building next door was used for the outdoor shots for the TV series "77 Sunset Strip. All the other shots of the valet parking area and inside the office building were all shot at Warner Brothers studio. The next time I'm over on Sunset Ill have to get out and check it out. I think the only two places left on Sunset from my cruising days in the late 60's-early 70's are The Whiskey and The Roxy Theater. Now everything are high rise condos, apartments and office building and a Starbucks on every other corner. Too bad!
@@AllanGonnella Interesting! I remember when I was a kid in the mid 60's my parents used to watch "77 Sunset Strip, but I was too young to understand it. I have a lot of memories of concerts at the Whiskey and the Roxy. I'm 66 years old.
My parents took me to POP when I was 8 years old (now 70) I remember the covered wagon ride for kids, for some reason it stuck with me all these years.
Thanks for sharing this! I was there for my 11th birthday in that year, 1964. First time riding a roller coaster. Watched a lion tamer show. And the circular ride where floor lowers. And, one feature there that I have yet to see on anyone's memories is the room where they had an 'underwater' scene with King Neptune. All the moving fish were suspended on wires to tracks in the ceiling. Anyone remember that?🙋♂️
I did edit out a lion tamer scene from this video, which showed a lion tamer wrestling with a lion in a small cage. Feared that YT might ban the video if I showed it. I might make another version with the lion tamer scene in it, or a separate version with just the lion tamer scene.. If my memory is correct, I recall the King Neptune room you reference was at or near the entrance to the park.. Thanks for watching and providing your feedback!

I was born December 1962 and we lived in Santa Monica at the time. I wish I knew if we went there or not. My mom has passed away and my dad is 93.
I have old movies as a kid there around 1964....that place seemed more popular than disneyland.
