And they said 'Peter Cook couldn't act'! This oafish character is a creation of genius, like Sir Les Patterson. Latchley absolutely inhabits Cook for eight minutes. Thank you for this, never shown in Oz.
I remember watching this the night it was broadcast, I hadn’t heard it was going to be a show entirely full of Peter Cook characters, it was an absolute joy from start to finish, when he was on form there was no one to touch him. And I am the pub bore who’ll still say “it’s all about the three M’s Motivation Motivation Motivation after a few drinks.
Cook is on fire here! The idea that his talent dwindled during later years is nonsense, when he wanted to he could still go down that comedic river and dredge up the most amazing stuff.
You never heard of Chris Morris? Get hold of the Why Bother CD. It is absolutely beautiful. Cook is interviewed as Sir Arthur Streeb Greebling, by Morris. Morris invents the questions on the spot, as ridiculous as they are, and Cook just flows with the most amazing ideas! You may even be able to listen to it on here!
I remember him when he was manger of Liverpool, introduced my son to him he gave his some marvellous advice “ son take a few weeks of football and then give it up altogether “ my son has never looked back now selling the programs outside the ground.
Talking about the Hodgson appointment and the European Cup Graham Taylor was on the radio this morning doing his best Alan Latchley impression- "It's all about winning, winning, winning."
The thing is, this was all off the cuff. Just give him the idea and watch him flow. the more he gets into the character, the more hilarious it becomes. no rehearsals, no script writers.....pure genius. RIP. Peter. gone far too soon.
I think a lot of the stuff we hear about Cook's performances being 'improvised' is a bit of a myth. I've no doubt that these appearances on Anderson's show, as indeed on 'Parkinson', were to a large degree rehearsed and scripted, though they're great to watch anyway.
yes yes you never knew with peter, even dud was nt ready for what was coming.what a lovely man he was, because he had the knack of hurting peoples feelings and making them realise he was right,Thats an amazin skill in people ,il oved him for that
I am new to peter cook and was saddened when I google him to know that he passed away :( RIP I saw the one where he does an aged rock star and it was awesome LOL
Apparently Peter Cook was a Tottenham fan and Peter Shreeve ( the manager at the time ) was a big mate. This is satirical about the intensity of all football managers and their hopes and way of doing things is expressed in Alan's approach. Most women would think that 11 men chasing a ball of wind around a pitch is no big deal but football and teams has always been a metaphor for many people's lives. And the vast majority of Managers come from the Working Classes ( this is not cricket) so it is authentic passion. Favourite: Bill Shankly - next Cloughie. The Managers now are basically populist drones who lack real character and are happy to small talk to the media and give them what they want. Two exceptions: Honorary Scouser Jurgen Klopf and of course Fergie ( even though I am a sympathetic Blue). Cook delivers a very good parody and he was cynical but very funny.
Actually Morris edited the tapes down from much longer recordings, although it's true that he was one of the best comedy partners Cook ever had in his later life because he brought his own persona to it instead of just being a stooge, like Clive Anderson in this video.
envy by some posters is not a pretty thingg to read...Peter Cook was a wicked talent. Hs personal life, whatever it was, is of no concern to those who want to laugh at a man who had wit and comic ingenuity.
That is my favourite comedy clip of all time.
Peter Cook - Genius.

Jason surely you should say Motivation 4 times and then say the 3 M's.
I saw it the night it was on. It was my introduction to the greatness and genius of Peter Cook. How strangely different things were in those days.
Something so beautiful, I can scarcely express it.....
He still had it right to the end, a man of so much talent could literally never be a wash-up
Cook is on fire here! The idea that his talent dwindled during later years is nonsense, when he wanted to he could still go down that comedic river and dredge up the most amazing stuff.
Admired by virtually every other comedian on the planet. That's how good Peter Cook was! Genius!

"Football is about nothing unless it's about something and what it is about is football!"
See, all real-life football managers sound like this to me.
I am new to peter cook and was saddened when I google him to know that he passed away :( RIP I saw the one where he does an aged rock star and it was awesome LOL
Peter Cook was fucking amazing!
such a full character, it's as tho cook only appears briefly at the end when his eyes twinkle
Nah, Clive could barely keep up. Cook was brilliant. God Bless you sir!
A total wit and one off... God rest peter
This accurately portrays the simplistic, outdated, neanderthal philosophy of English football,Managers, players, fans and pundits. spot on
This is basically every English manager from the '60s to the '80s.
'and when the game's over... get 'em in again'.
Brilliant
this is classic comedy
football is about nothing unless it's about something! Peter Cook R.I.P.
Agreed...very adly missed. A great man indeed.
Absolute comic masterclass.

Allegations not allowed? Does that mean I cannot accuse Peter Cook of being the funniest man on this planet -- EVER!? lol
Pure genius
Alan Latchley don't have give me the fuckin' horn!
Guy was a genius.
James Hetfield has a tattoo on his right arm "Dare To Fail" must have been a Peter Cook fan.
Genious.
uhh, when I first saw this I found it hard to believe he hadn't played Alan Latchley 500 times before.
where is the comedy today? it's disappeared! Peter Cook: genius
This is exactly the type of new forward thinking manger we need at Cardiff. 😄
Going on Clive Anderson's reactions, PC probably gave him the questions beforehand and the rest was probably improvised

Fantastic - everyone who saw Brian Clough will find this funny, correction - it's still funny even if you never did see Clough !
envy by some posters is not a pretty thingg to read...Peter Cook was a wicked talent. Hs personal life, whatever it was, is of no concern to those who want to laugh at a man who had wit and comic ingenuity.
The facial flushedness was probably the real thing!! God Peter Cook was good- or God.
