Yog Sothoth knows the gate, Yog Sothoth IS the gate.
He is the guardian, and key to the gate.
Past, present, future, all are one in Yog Sothoth.
He knows where The Old Ones broke through of old,
and he knows where they will break through again.
He knows where they tread Earth's fields,
and why no one may behold them as they tread.

It seems that the outer gods are like the the primordial deities in Greek mythology. And the 3 main outer gods (Azathoth, Yog-sothoth, and Nyarlethotep), are parallels to the attributes of G-d: Azathoth is omnipotent, Yog-sothoth is omnipresent and omniscient, and Nyarlethotep is omni-malevolent (the opposite of a loving god). For those who object to the last park, the opposite of a loving god isn't one that hates. It's one who profoundly doesn't care. And malevolent deities may not hate humanity, but they may want to torture us, and cause chaos or insanity, which does describe Nyarlethotep.

    • @thenew4559
      @thenew4559 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

Yes, the primordial deities of Greek Mythology are very similar in concept. The main thing that’s lacking with them is the extreme, visceral horror of Lovecraft’s writing.

    • @keanu5085

The three primordials, the Outer Gods, are:
      1. Aazathoth
      2. Yog Sothoth
      3. Shub Nigguarth
Nyarlathotep is the messenger of their will.

Yog-Sothoth & Randolph Carter in "Through the Gates of the Silver Key," written in collaboration with Lovecraft admirer E. Hoffman Price, details Carter's adventures in another dimension where he encounters a more primordial version of himself (implied to be Yog-Sothoth) who explains that Carter-and indeed all beings-are ultimately nothing more than manifestations of a greater being. Carter's mind ends up trapped in the body of an alien, another facet of the higher being. The investigation into Carter's disappearance takes place four years later, in 1932.
Yog-Sothoth knows the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the gate. Yog-Sothoth is the key and guardian of the gate. Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth. He knows where the Old Ones broke through of old, and where They shall break through again. He knows where They have trod earth's fields, and where They still tread them, and why no one can behold Them as They tread.

      Probably my favorite Lovecraft story.
"Through the Gates" is the only one in Lovecraft's own works where any Outer God other than Nyarlathotep is directly portrayed - so to speak. And the Key and the Gate is actually pretty chill. When Carter meets it, Yog's all "Hey bro, I like you. Since you came all the way here, so why not learn the secret to everything?" He even gives Carter a chance to back out.
And in a way, there's a bit of highly subjective horror to Yog's revelation when you remember that Lovecraft was a virulent racist. Being considered as the same as things you abhor mayb be the ultimate nightmare for someone whose outlook is so sharply defined by hatred of the "other". But for me, such a revelation is comforting and even uplifting.

I honestly don't know much of the WoW lore so there is much more to it than I wrote.
C'Thun and N'Zoth have the coolest stories. Yogg Saron is pretty dope too.
EDIT: Some of those are raid bosses you kill. It's a shame we actually kill those magnificent creatures; that we're even capable of it but oh well. In Yogg Saron's loot table there is the mount Mimiron's Head. Mimiron was one of the guardians installed in Ulduar by the Titans.
@Atomics985 In the WoW universe there are 'Old Gods' and they've been around forever.
      - C'Thun nested under a city which was put under a city. The city was magically sealed by the enemies they were at war with. During thousands of years, C'Thun slowly corrupted their minds until they were all his slaves.
      - N'Zoth probably resides deep in the ocean. He corrupted Queen Azshara of the Night Elves. They eventually turned into the Nagas. The former Elven society now resides at the bottom of the ocean.
      - Yogg Saron was captured by the Titans. They built a prison on the continent of Northrend for him to be contained in. His influence was too strong though. Not only did he slowly corrupt all the guardians, but also the entire continent to some extent. It's said that the Saronite metal, which is found all over the continent, is his blood and just being in the presence of it will slowly drive you insane.
Y'Shaarj: I might be wrong on this Old God. I wasn't into WoW that much when this Old God was current content. Anyways, he found his way to the peaceful continent of Pandaria. There he split himself up into several entities consisting of emotions. The different entities represent Fear, Anger, Pride and I'm probably forgetting a few. He corrupted the Mogu folk and bent them to his will.
The last known one is G'huun. He's relevant in the Battle for Azeroth expansion which I do not play so I couldn't tell you much about him. It has to do with the trolls which are inspired by Jamaica and the Incan/Mayan people.
Then you of course have Azeroth, the world which hosts all the Old Gods. It's clearly inspired by Azatoth.
I honestly don't know much of the WoW lore so there is probably a thousand times more to the Old Gods than what I wrote. The stories are pretty cool. They're Lovecraftian in a way, but instead of being very suggestive; cryptic and assuming, they're much more definitive and absolute. There is a recorded conclusion and definitiveness to them which is fun.

The thing I like most about Yog-Sothoth is that He is probably the least malevolent (on average) of all the Outer Gods. He's certainly not good - after all, the Outer Gods are beyond good and evil - but He is just as likely to strike up a friendly conversation with you as drive you completely insane with a glance.
I even have one of my OCs in a fic I wrote turn out to be one of Yog-Sothoth's kids, except he looks and acts completely human (unlike his brothers in The Dunwich Horror) and doesn't even learn of his lineage or awaken his gifts as Yog-Sothoth's child until a few chapters before the end. But he does have one special inborn power: his presence in a given reality somehow blocks outside viewing of what's going on in that universe...even from omniscient beings like Yog-Sothoth Himself.
    And Yog did intentionally, too.

Yog-Sothoth is mentioned in a Stephen King novel like Shub-Niggurath was, but in this case Y-S was mentioned on a doorway near the end of the novel, "Needful Things". As well as an episode of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, although he was only called Yog, which makes some sense for a kid's show.

Its funny. As I was watching this I thought to my self I will mention you should do a audio reading of Lovecraft with the images and music you use. A few seconds later you answered my internal suggestion. As for other Mythologies to explore. Wow that a tough one. The only ones I can think of (right now) is by Clive Barker, starting with The Hellbound Heart. Then I would suggest Weave World. Weave World was a crazy strange trip and very controversial at the time. Next would be Cabal which is my favorite but a lesser story of Myth and more of where Myths could have originated from.

Huh -- I knew vaguely the plot of The Dunwich Horror, but I didn't realize Yoggy was the dad responsible for the horror and his brother. I'd ask how he ever made love to a human, but being everything everywhere all the time. . .yeah, I guess that was pretty easy. Still, it's creepy to think that there's an entity like that out there who knows EVERYTHING. Big Yog-Sothoth is watching you. . .

This is obviously up to interpretation and, in the context of the mythos, there really is no answer, but, what would you say is Yog-Sothoth´s place in the pantheon? If it is at the edge or fringe of the universe, does it exist outside of Azathoth´s creation? What would you guess is Yog-Sothoth´s relationship to the other gods?

    • @vampyruslupus9950
      @vampyruslupus9950 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Heres what ive been able to gather (from multiple sources, obviously):
I think the second question is easier to answer. If Azathoth is the accidental creator of our known universe and everything in it, then Yog-Sothoth is simply the known universe itself, and the orbs that make up his "body" are actually "windows" to the planets with sentient life within said universe. Therefore he technically does exist within Azathoth's creation, because he IS Azathoth's creation. And yet he is also fully conscious, sentient, and aware, but this awareness is outside of the world/dimension that we are aware of.
Now the first question. This one is fully open to interpretation, but I think he is ranked with the Other Gods or the Elder Gods. He is younger than Nyarlathotep(the first son of Azathoth) but technically outranks him because the Crawling Chaos is bound to the will of the Outer/Elder Gods. He is equal to Shubb-Niggurath, with the two of them representing Father Time/Space and Mother Nature, which automatically makes him outrank all the other Elder Gods. To put it simply, he outranks all but Azathoth and the First Born(the Nameless Mist: Am-Daeghar and the Darkness: Zalgatoth)
And third. I imagine Yog-Sothoth is to the other Lovecraftian deities what Yaweh/Jehova is to the Pagan deities. Aware of his own superiority, but also aware of their place in the Grand Scheme. He merely acknowledges their existence and leaves them to whatever it is they're doing.
