    I like Walthers mainline locomotives except when the model had ditch lights because they are hard to see since they are very dim. Ditch lights are not the easiest to fix.

      I personally don't have any with ditch lights but I have heard others say the same thing about them being dim.

      @@VintageRoadRail I have experience working with ditch lights I do replace them from time to time I just prefer not having to replace them on a new locomotive that has them from a manufacturer that does it half done.

    These SD50s are really nice for the price. Thanks for sharing.

    These are nice locomotives to detail up for a project. My biggest gripe with them however is that the shell is an absolute PITA to remove and it presses hard against the chassis

    • @VintageRoadRail
      @VintageRoadRail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hate when the shell is hard to get off. I always worry that I'm going to break it.

      @@VintageRoadRail The procedure is simple but you have to really spread the shell apart. Not exactly friendly towards ditch light installers, I installed those on mine and the wires snapped apart due to how tight the space is

      I got a to KCS copy of the SD50. It was really fun (NOT) getting the shell off to install a decoder! Doesn't help that the instructions that came with the model were vague at best!

    Really thinking about getting one of these in either a Conrail or Reading and Nothern. Would be my first factory DCC& Sound engine. After you have had it for a bit do you recommend them still?

    • @VintageRoadRail
      @VintageRoadRail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's been running and sounds great. I would recommend it. Just don't pay MSRP for it. Should be between 150 and 170 for DCC with sound. MSRP is 209. I had it preorder on trainworld.com. I canceled that as I found it locally for 5 dollars more. Chose to support local.

      @@VintageRoadRail thanks for the info. Yeah $160 on train world is the cheapest i have found. I have no local hobby shop but think I may pick one up now.

    Damn the old proto 2000 sd50s would pull 80 cars no problem

    • @VintageRoadRail
      @VintageRoadRail  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was a bit let down by its pulling capabilities.

    I got a couple of the Reading and Northern ones, one of which the plow broke off just like yours. Seems they could do a better job attaching it.

    • @VintageRoadRail
      @VintageRoadRail  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The snow plow unfortunately is not attached from the factory you have to attach it yourself. Sadly they don't make that easy either. It doesn't just snap into place, you have to glue it. 🤬

    • @wiseguysmith6519
      @wiseguysmith6519 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VintageRoadRail Interesting, I thought I could see where they had the glue for your plow on the front of yours in the video. My one is attached and the other I can tell was attached but broke off because the plow is yellow and the yellow pins from it are broke off in the frame below the anti-climber. Also the horns on that one were loose in the box (thankfully not broken), it must have got thrown around pretty good!
