Absolutely the best detailed TH-cam video explaining a cure for a piss pore appliance design. I am a retired appliance repair man. I can totally agree and prove that ALL appliances built in the past 10 years are built for no more life than five years. Thank you for your video and design repair.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I am very pleased to report that my repair job is still holding 18 months later after I recorded this video. I hope everyone has the same success with their repair.
Agreed about still selling products with this defect. They know it and are still selling them. I went into a store and played dumb and asked an associate about it. He said that Whirlpool is aware of it and has made corrections in its wiring. What a load of crap. I was able to replicate this repair on my fridge Thanks to this video it only took about 90 minutes. Thank you so much for posting this. I hope others see it and can save themselves from going without ice or buying a new unit. Many thanks.
Exact same problem I’m having; did a poor sodder job that only lasted 1 month with my kids continuously stepping on the bottom plate while swinging the doors open like they are trying to achieve lift-off. Thanks for commiserating and showing your fix.
Thanks for making this video. I cut out the bad section of my wire harness, and soldered in a new, longer section, using some super-flexible 16AWG. I re-routed my bundle, and secured each end with tie-wraps, to relieve as much stress as possible. Of course, the solder joints can't be anywhere near where the wires bend. We are making ice once again, and I will keep an eye on my wires to make sure they are not being stressed.
Finally found your video. The problem was just as you described. I reconnected the wires (all of them) and I followed your modifications to the kickplate, put extra covering on the wire harness and removed all the pinchpoints at the frame and it moves freely now. It now twists instead of bending. I was going nuts troubleshooting this until I found your video. Thanks!
I have a Maytag washer and dryer that have been going for about 35 years. Yes I have worked on both. but the older ones are built better. As a retired GM tech this problem developed many times in "high flex" areas. I found extending the wires to move the repair out of this "high flex" area. Some of the best wire for these areas is stainless steel wire! You have to use crimp connectors, but the wire is near impossible to break. Good luck.
Yes, a crappy design. My problem was exactly the same as yours on a 3 1/2-year-old Maytag counter depth machine. So I soldered the wires back together, covered each wire with shrink tubing, repaired and reused the shield, discarded the wire clamp which created a softer path and also did not use the under doors trim panel again creating more room for the wire bundle to move. A super big thanks for this video!
From an electronic engineer to a mechanical engineer: Kudos on your analysis, conclusions, and redesign effort. I have a five year old Whirlpool fridge with the exact same problem and will use your video as a starting point for my similar exercise. I agree that this lousy design, that has apparently persisted without fix for a number of years, is an embarrassment to the engineering profession. It is also a good example of why I will take a close look at Korean rather than American made fridges when we buy our next one.
FWIW, a different tack to solving this problem might be to patch in a section of high flex cable that is designed and tested to withstand movement. This is available from automation specialty houses like AutomationDirect. It may be worth the 20ft minimum order to have a simple and reliable fix for the problem.
Good luck! They are still selling models with this design, so disappointing! I honestly don't know who makes a reliable refrigerator and would love for a manufacturer to share some data. The 1 year warranties most manufacturers offer are indiciticative of poor quality.
@@CharlesRollman Another person had the same idea, and I think it's a great idea. But, for me, finding the appropriate gauge of wire would be a challenge and may be outside of my level of expertise. Last thing I want to do is put the wrong gauge in and create some sort of hot spot! Brian
@@wendysuept If you revisit the original video at about 5:41 you can see the bundle of wires. There are a bunch of small diameter wires in a black jacketed cable and then a pair of fatter wires, one is blue and the other is gray-orange. The small diameter wires are low level signals. Almost any diameter wire will work fine. The larger pair provide the current to run the motor. Those you'd want to match in wire gauge or measure the current so you know what the wires need to be rated to handle. In any case it's the small wires that seem to break, so I am not concerned about the replacement gauge.
Does a singular male and female plug connector exist that the wires could be inserted into at the curve? This would make the job so much easier, all you would need to do is cut and strip all wires and insert them into each connector and then plug in. The plug connectors could act as protection where they bend. If only I were an electrician.
I’m having this exact same issue. My wife has been telling me to contact Maytag but I’ve been hesitant because I knew they wouldn’t do anything. Sounds like you’re experience is exactly how I figured mine would go. I’m going to try this fix or some modifications from the comments section. Thank you for this video!
Great repair video Brian. I have a Whirlpool with 2 broken wires and will use your repair for reference to my repair effort some time this week. Thank you.
@@wendysuept Got right into it and removed brackets, moved ground wires and soldered the broken wires. Started making ice 2 hours later and been making ice all night. I believe I saw another video similar to yours maybe 6 mo to a year ago that had the same problem. They also did something similar to the wires. I have a similar Maytag with icemaker inside the door. So far all I have had to do is thaw the ice maker with a blow dryer. However, now it only makes the maker work for a short time. I might have the same problem as yours. I totally agree with your opinion on durability of products.
Thanks! Good luck with your repair. Most of the other videos I've seen just quickly repaired the wires and moved on. Unfortunately, that will only gain you a few months of operation.
Still going strong? I just found my white wire broken and butt spliced it quickly to see if it fixes it. I'm definitely going to need to go back in and make a more permanent fix. I worry that the solder will prevent the wire from flexing.
Am having the exact same problem right now. Am not an mechanical engineer, however, after watching your video I feel totally confident that I will be able to fix my problem. Great tutorial video! Thank you.😊
Thank you! Great video. I just found the same problem - every wire except the ground was severed. Took me about a full day to repair even with your excellent instructions. There is now a class action lawsuit - Costa, et al. v. Whirlpool Corp., Case No. 1:24-cv-00188-UNA, in the U.S District Court for the District of Delaware. I'm looking into joining it.
If memory strikes me, right, whirlpool, makes a replacement component for this problem. And you have to take the door off to do it, but the wire loom is configured differently than the original and you could see where they lengthen it and require certain clips to go and all the jobs that I’ve done this, I’ve never had a callback at all these years.
Always remove the door to effect this type of repair. This guy may be a master engineer or mechanical engineer or whatever he said at the beginning of the video but he’s no technician and that’s the big difference here. A technician would’ve removed the door. Also, most trained technicians know that Whirlpool makes a redesign solution for this. But you’d only know this if you’re a trained refrigerator technician not some kind of fancy engineer.
Wow. I have a maytag model MSS25C4MGZ that was just installed 20 months ago, and the icemaker has lost power just as shown in your video. I don't have the tools nor the ability to do all the impressive stuff you did on this video. Very frustrating.

So I bought a new ice amker and installed it, but it still didn't work. The next day, I found this video. I looked at the bottom of the fridge and I found two broken wires just like in this video. I have to get some wires, solder, and/or some other connectors to splice it back together. That will have to be when the stores open tomorrow. It's not fixed yet, but I'm confident that this will fix it.
Well said Brian! Can't agree more about lack of quality these days. I've made this repair twice now and the wires broke in different locations each time. Now some wires have broke at the location where they vertically enter the door, seen in your video around 15:17. At my wits end with this refrigerator. I feel at this point I have to take the door apart or replace the door?

No, but I used to get ice trapped up in the tray area when my ice maker wasn’t working correctly. Accumulated ice in areas it shouldn’t be can lead to a frozen line. I also modified the area it was accumulating to prevent the buildup. Unfortunately, I didn’t do a video.

This is my opinion on this issue... depending on where you install your refrigerator/freezer, if the freezer door can open all the way unobstructed (like 180 degrees), then the ice maker wires will last about 3 years in my estimation. If the door can only open 90 degrees (because it is near a counter or cabinet, for example), then it will last approximately 6 years. How long ago was this made and how long has the repair lasted. Is it still working? I have the same issue and the underside of my wirrlpool fridge looks exactly like this. Think I can replicate this repair. Looks pretty straight forward. Thank you for making this video.
I made the video about 6 months ago and the repair is still working this time. What is most disappointing to me is that you can still find Whirlpool models with this same wiring configuration in the retail stores.
I have the same refrigerator and the same problem. I had a Maytag repairman tell me he could fix it for $1800 but it would happen again. Any lawyers out there want to start a class action lawsuit?
I know right... with only a 1 year warranty, they may as well advertise it as a "disposable refrigerator." Not sure how a lawsuit would work due to the "defect" occurring outside of the warranty period... unless of course, the exposed wires burns down someone's house.
Buy another refrigerator! I had one that nearly caught fire when the lights didn’t go off and was literally melted on the inside. Not worth your lives.
If I could buy one that I knew was truely a quality machine, I would. And how would I know it was a quality machine? The manufacturer would give me a bumper to bumper 10-year warranty! One year warranties are the norm, which is simply a vailed way of saying "this ridiculously short warranty is our assurance to you that you are indeed spending thousands of dollars on a giant landfill worth piece of garbage."

Yes, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Amana, Maytag, JennAir, are all are part of Whirlpool Portfolio! Unfortunately!!
There has got to be a way to replace the entire wire harness. Whirlpool sells it for around $30
Just replacing the harness will buy you a couple of years, but the problem will reoccur unless the design is modified.
How is this holding up?
Our repair is still holding since I made this video, about 18 months ago. So far, so good!
Class action is already started
Replace the door and remove and never reinstall the kick plate
I have the same problem sir u do good job 👏👍🏻👍🏻🫡
Thank you!!!
You are welcome! Hope it was helpful!
Ive been keying all Whirlpool appliances in the box stores. A little bit of payback
I'm just making ice cubes the old fashioned way
Buy another refrigerator!
Our Maytag is just a couple of months old. Ice stopped working today. Piece of shit
Exact same problem I’m having; did a poor sodder job that only lasted 1 month with my kids continuously stepping on the bottom plate while swinging the doors open like they are trying to achieve lift-off. Thanks for commiserating and showing your fix.
