The country that actually missed Second world war *
The ocean breeze and enormous quantity of sunny days.
This is Portugal, a lovely country in the western edge of Europe.
The country that became great supporter of Ukraine in that part of the Earth.

I am an American married to a British person and we moved to Portugal years ago. We have never felt more welcomed or cared for. The people here are so giving and the way the country cares for its citizens is sooooo much better than in America or the UK. Amazing country, amazing people. We are a community. We are very grateful. We would be happy to help refugees. Slava Ukraini! 🌻💙💛

I cannot be more ashamed of my own country. Brazil is under a fascist government, but Brazilians hugely support Ukrainians, and Brazil has one of the largest communities of Ukrainians in the world, twice the size of the one in Poland before the war. All the love and respect for Portugal and Ukraine.

It was a long time ago - two hundred years, to be precise - that Portugal was invaded for the last time. Napolean armies occupied the contry after an ultimatum just because they could, due to the huge gap, in man and equipment. The political power fled or capitulated, but ordinary people raised up and revolted. In the end, they were repeled, not without a huge loss of human lifes. I do truly believe the Ukranian people will also end up victorious, despite short sighted and slow acting European politicians. Tirany must be stopped! The Portuguese people are with you! Slava Ukrain!

More precisely, Napoleon invaded Portugal because Portugal refused to join the rest of the countries under his thumb(in the so called "Continental Block" - Commercially blocking any trade between those countries and England) that Napoleon wanted to employ in order to asphyxiate England, making it easier to capture. We refused and defeated Napoleon 3 times in a row in his attempted invasions. 🇵🇹🇬🇧

as a Portuguese I can confirm this. the Ukrainian population living here doubled, you can see various cars with UA license plates on my street since the war started.
we started receiving students this week and everyone is really excited to help, even the kids love the idea of receiving a foreign student and help them as they can. Portuguese students, from Portugal, from Angola, Cabo Verde, Brazil, s. Tome e Príncipe, Mozambique and even Romania, they all want to help and show there solidarity.
and of course, the ukranian students that we already had before the war, they are all great students, all fitted in very very fast and they all rallied up to help receive the new ones.
language is a big barrier, indeed... but with a little help from the ukranian and Moldovan kids we already had and our smartphones we try to do our best! 🇵🇹❤️🇺🇦

@UATV English • Thank you for sharing information on ALL the countries that are helping Ukraine. American media tends to be very self-centered, reporting primarily on what the U.S.A. is doing. That focus makes it easy for us to think we are acting alone. In my opinion that focus makes us unnecessarily arrogant. I think it can also make us feel unappreciated and sorry for ourselves.
Your videos showing how large parts of the world appreciate the sacrifices Ukrainians are making standing for all freedom-loving peoples is important for Americans to be a little more humble and to recognize unity with our fellow democracies. 💪🕊🇺🇦🌻

Look at the movie Don’t Look Up-Americans think if an asteroid was going to destroy all of earth it would be us who discovered it, our decision alone how to handle or mishandle, and it would only hit America. Even all the discussion in USA on the social media saturated left about “white privilege” ignores the fact that 2/3 of global population lives on less than 3$ a day. If you are American you’re globally speaking incredibly privileged. We are as a general rule self-centered and ignorant. And we don’t understand the value of our freedom because we’re competing for “most oppressed” status.

More than 4000 km from Kyiv and I drove over there twice, the hospitality from the Ukrainians almost made me stay there for good, wish my wife could let me go to fight for their freedom, I guess that returning to украина will be in the agenda to help rebuild this beautiful country. 🇺🇦

Portugal has the most liberated drug policy and the fewest addicts. The world could learn a lot from Portugal.

Not quite...Consuming illicit psychoactive substances continues to be an act punishable by law, however since 2001 it is no longer a behavior subject to criminal proceedings (and as such treated in the courts) and has become a social offense. It changed the way a drug user is looked at, leaving aside the prejudice that compared him to a criminal, starting to consider him as a person who needs help and specialized support. There are multidisciplinary teams prepared to listen to the defendant, assess the seriousness of the situation and take the measures that will be applied. The work they develop takes place in close articulation with other services in the local community, so that helping populations with high-risk consumption and drug addiction problems becomes a reality. Drug trafficking, however, is indeed a crime and heavily punished by law.

The ending hit hard. Unfortunately, even in the time of Salazar and then Caetano, the average Portuguese military officer was still more open-minded and more cosmopolitan to be open to revolt against the dictactorship then the average Russian military officer is today, so I sadly just do not expect the Russian version of Salgueiro Maia to come along and free Russia and end this "Russian Colonial War".

Humanity is one big Union. No matter what language or religion we may have, we are all the same.
And Ukrainians are now being killed and invaded by an evil terrorist attack of putin. So we should protect and help our human friends, Ukrainians.

There is a stanza in the EU anthem about this, written by Friedrich Schiller more than 200 years ago. In English it goes:
Whoever has succeeded in the great attempt,
      To be a friend's friend,
Whoever has won a lovely wife,
      Add his to the jubilation!
Yes, and also whoever has just one soul
To call his own in this world!
And he who never managed it should slink
      Weeping from this union!

Thank you for the video and the kind words.
Being portuguese I know you could make a video about all the people that justify the war with "this is EU/Biden/NATO's fault" or some that may even support Russia openly (not many but they're out there). In the images from President Zelensky's address to our Parliament is noticeable the 6 empty chairs of our Portuguese Communist Party, just an example. I also know, for my disappointment, there are a lot of people that just think this is something happening far away and doesn't concern them. I would say any of these things happen in Portugal as they can happen in any other country but they are still disappointing.
But there is always a choice between pointing out the negative or the positive (as positive as it can be, in this situation) and it's consequences. Pointing out the negative may discourage those who are trying to support, while just making the other ones feel they're having an effect, which - I think - is the exact opposite of what's needed to unite those who stand with Ukraine.
(Will not expand into it but just to clarify I'm not saying the negatives can't be pointed out, just that they should be precise and specific and not generalizations.)
    Note:
Portugal was involved in WWI with a few tens of thousands of badly equiped soldiers.
Our independence was at stake during WWII and a great deal of diplomacy was needed to secure it.
Portugal was involved in a long war in Africa in the 60's and 70's where the USSR played it's role in undermining our presence there.
"Missed two world wars" really isn't something that defines Portugal.

Take the frozen assets of the Russian central bank that are held in the West, and give them to Ukraine as partial restitution / reparations for the depredations and atrocities of the Russian invasion, to help rebuild Ukraine. Victory to Ukraine. 💙💛☮🖤
