In the books, Harper uses maggot therapy to treat many of the wounds because they would eat diseased flesh but leave healthy flesh behind. It's also - to some researchers - MRSA proof because the maggots could be got rid of after.

Agreed; also, when they were shot/stabbed, the penetrating object would typically push some of the victim's clothing inside the wound with all the sweat, dirt, and bacteria from the offending article of clothing, which since they didn't know how to properly mind a puncture wound would typically fester quite quickly.
