  • Dayton's new DTA-2.1BT integrated amplifier is also a honey. Firstly because it sounds nice, secondly because its all-metal chassis is so darned small -- just 1.4 by 5.25 by 5.2 inches -- and best of all the DTA-2.1BT sells for just $99. Paired with Dayton's also-new $69 per pair MK402 speakers, the sound is a pure delight.
    Read my DTA2.1BT review here, www.cnet.com/news/this-pint-s... And the MK402 speaker review here, www.cnet.com/products/dayton-...

      Joe Al . No, the worst mistake I made was to once have joined an audiophile group on Facebook in order to learn a little It is for the most part cultish, a battle of egos showing off who had the most clever parafernalia. Unless you are suggesting that Steve is just a propaganda boy to whoever pays him to review just any junk on the market. That would be a serious claim you are making. I would say that a few of what Steve suggested overtime I find really satysfying and reasonably priced.

    Hi Steve, If you like this Dayton amp, you should love the S.M.S.L. AD-18. It has way more in the way of inputs, both digital and analog, has more power (80 watts/chan @ 4ohm), built-in Bluetooth, headphone amp, USB in, 2 optical ins, coax in, aux in, line level sub out (for the more common powered subs). Unit also has a nifty display, a remote control, and some useful built-in EQ's. Great package for only 45 more $ than the DTA-2.1BT.

    Steve, thanks for saving me from PC powered speaker hell. I have passive speakers for home audio and HT set ups but I made a mistake of getting powered speakers for my PC. My barely used right Audioengine A2 speaker crackled. And I had to have it fixed for about the same price as getting a used one. And it still did the same thing. And although I really like my JBL 305 monitors (powered) for clarity, I could have gotten mired in another dumb desktop powered speaker. But with your recommendation of the Dayton DTA.2.1BT2, my PC sounds amazing. I paired it with a used Elac B6 and I am just in flabbergasted. Thank you.

    Those little amps are great for lots of applications where size, cost, or simplicity are paramount. Something for kitchen, bedroom, shop, computer etc. Another application is multi-channel musical instrument (specifically virtual pipe organs) where you might need a dozen or more channels of set it and forget it amplification.
    Right now I am listening on a cheapo Lepai amplifying my computer and driving my home built OBs and a kludged up sub and you know it is pretty enjoyable. As the computer system it stays powered on all the time and the wife can play back stuff on the computer while I am at work with no fuss. I really wouldn't want to use my tube amp for something like this.

    Update:
    On your recommendation, Steve I bought TWO for only $78 each!
    I had a broken REL T3 subwoofer with perfect drivers, so I bypassed the plate amp to make it passive. I also had two sets of Realistic Mininus 7 mini speakers gathering decades of dust and an old passive sub....SO I now have music in a spare bedroom and the bike shop in my garage is next!
    Your CNET review stated that the subwoofer channel of this amp was not very useful but I beg to differ.
    Also Parts Express have subwoofer kits that can be built up as passives so this is a perfect addition to their line of product.
    The amp sounds fine via Bluetooth. I plan to hook up a TV for the guests.
    Thanks for the recommendation;-)

  • @raymondleggs5508
    @raymondleggs5508 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    if you need more inputs, there's also the Technical pro RX113, RX504/503, RX41UR ,RX38UR and RX55URIBT Pyle PDA6BU, PT24BT, PDA7BU stereo receivers. Which also have a bigger power supply than the "wall wart" that will come with the amp.
    I have the RX55URIBT and it's pretty nice for the price, as an AVR it lacks but as a 50 watt there about per side stereo receiver it's pretty good sounding. At least with the Dayton AIR towers I power it with. I used to be a brand snob. I almost got the other technical pro receivers I listed but the RX55URIBT had the best track record. it also has 2 subwoofer outs. which can double as preamp outs for one or two of their variety of 2 channel power amps.

    I realize this video is two plus years old, but wanted to say that I tried the sub out with a older floor speaker with a 10” woofer and it actually works really well . Yes I realize it is a hack thing to do, but it works in a pinch until you can make or buy a passive sub.

    I'm using this to drive my computer and turntable audio in my office, powering a pair of Elac Debut 2.0 5s (and a powered 10" subwoofer). Does a great job. I have the DTA-2.1BT. It's a nice small amp. The two main channels are full-range and the subwoofer channel is LP'd around 160 Hz I believe. That can seem a bit too high to drive a passive subwoofer, but if you use sealed main speakers that naturally roll off around 100 Hz and a bandpass subwoofer that covers everything below that, the results can be pretty good. That basically describes the system that I set up for my youngest daughter in her bedroom.

    Steve, have you heard the Musical Paradise MP-303 digital (Class D) TUBED integrated amp, that only sells for $188? It has garnered amazing reviews, and hits way below what it should be going for, price-wise. Seriously, this thing drives my Magnepans with aplomb, I kid you not! It is, to me as a long time audiophile, the audiophile steal of the century! And no, I don't work for, or have any affiliation with the company. On another note, I have the Dayton B652 AIR (now they have the tower version too) speakers with the AMT tweeter (folded paper ribbon?) in my garage system, and they sound amazing for super cheap speakers! Dayton makes some very affordable, quality audio equipment for sure. Cheers!

    Steve, I love your videos. I have a Cambridge Soundworks satellite speaker system. The (passive) sub has two (voicecoil) inputs. Internally there is a built-in crossover. The manual shows the wiring arrangement with a standard R/L channel amp. Essentially, the same R/L amp outputs feed the two voice coils in parallel. I'd like to use this Dayton amp. You touched on the possible crossover interaction between the subwoofer output crossover and the passive sub speaker crossover. Can you provide any additional comments or recommendations? I'm thinking it would be better if the amplifier sub output was unfiltered. Do such (unfiltered sub outputs) exist? Thanks!

    Considering some of the Dayton Audio customer base are DIYers, the powered subwoofer out is not that abnormal. Someone wanting to build a box for a generic sub, using a car sub from a garage sale, or even pressing a crappy HTIB "subwoofer" into service, that is where the powered output makes sense. Granted, I get what you are saying.

    I looked at DTA2.1bt in detail. 1st, you can't get 200w of output using the supplied 24v4A power supply. 2nd, this DTA is dual chip, one running L/R and the other BTL mode, and the BTL side is fed from a 180Hz 12db low pass filter (not sure if it gets that from L or R input, or if there's a active mixer to combine L & R). I will attempt to drive Micca in-wall @4ohm, and attach a PylePro 12" DVC (2x8ohm in parallel) in-wall woofer to the DTA sub output. I will also upgrade power supply to a 8.4A version.

    Most low cost devices with dials/knobs tend to start crackling over time and not staying smooth with their response. Remotes eliminate that problem. I'm not opposed to getting up and turning a dial but when it starts losing its sensitivity and screws with the audio quality, a remote becomes a necessity.

    Hi Steve,
    I got a pair of focal Dôme Flax speakers nominal impedance 8 ohms and the recommend amp power is 25-100 w. I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to matching the power requirements of speakers to amps as all the speakers I currently have are powered and internally amped.
    I’m looking at the Dayton APA150 150W Power Amplifier and wondering if it’s and good and if it will do the job for me. Or if you have any other recommendations, I just need a left and right Chanel and no bells and whistles like Bluetooth as I don’t need it and I want the amp small enough to hide under my desk, I live in Thailand and there’s not many people around that I can ask about this so thanks in advance.
    Graham.

    Using a small preamp with a BT transmitter can substitute for a remote-control, albeit the price could exceed the price of this amp. P-E sells a $45 tube preamp, and $70 BT trans/receiver combo, which could be worthwhile for some remote-less systems.

    Little gun shy right now about 'cheap' hifi. I went and pulled the trigger one of the current crop of praised to the sky bookshelf pairs for around $100 - and had to sell them because they were so horrible sounding in my room. Not to mention the fact that they looked cheap, felt cheap, and _sounded_ cheap.
    On the other hand, bought a Chinese tube line level buffer pre-amp to solve a specific problem (getting my smart phone to sound good on my bedroom system) - and the results are better than I had a right to expect. Could you add a little more clarity on the sub? I bought this amplifier and two Pioneer SP-BS22-LR speakers. I want to use it for a home theater speaker system and to play music through my phone on Bluetooth. Is there a subwoofer you would recommend? Does this mean I need a subwoofer that does not plug into the wall? Thanks!!

    • @editorjuno
      @editorjuno 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you need a passive subwoofer -- and considering the response curve of those Pioneers and the very high low-pass frequency of the Dayton's subwoofer channel, you'll want one with a built-in low-pass inductor that brings the sub in at somewhere between 60 and 75 Hz or buy an external series inductor to do that job, otherwise the sub and the low end of the Pioneers will overlap and cause bass-heavy muddiness.

  • @editorjuno
    @editorjuno 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The new DTA-2.1BT2 sells for $86 and has the very desirable feature of a front panel control for the low-pass frequency of the subwoofer channel. Combine this with a $51 pair of B652-AIR speakers, which are considerably better than the tiny MK402s, and you'll have a much better system for only $137 (with free shipping from Parts Express), leaving $31 in a $168 budget to find yourself a decent used passive sub on eBay or at a local thrift store -- I found myself a remarkably good old Pioneer HTP-102-SW (with a Radio Shack "Optimus" badge) for only $6 at a nearby Goodwill. BTW, Dayton/PE has apparently adopted noaudiophile.com's excellent tweeter polarity reversal idea, which makes the already very good B652-AIRs even better.

    • @SJMessinwithBoats
      @SJMessinwithBoats 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      mahee to push a driver to max, a speaker needs to be low impedance. I am pretty sure it's because of the available voltage. Like say, old car stereo amps didn't have anything but 12 volt to feed on. A 32 ohm speaker couldn't pull as much wattage as a 4 ohm. In headphones, it only takes a small amount of wattage to max out so higher impedance makes more sense. I'm no pro, best guess.also I heard on another channel that old tube amps needed 8 ohms because anything less, they messed with output.

  • @funkymonkey1198
    @funkymonkey1198 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the comment by Steve about rhe crossover in an active sub could confuse matters....just set crossover frequency on sub to max and let the amp send it what it wants and in effect the amp will be doing the filtering.

    On your side regards $$$ vs quality. But I thought you didn't like class D amps? My T-amp (a class D variation) 45W PC I prefer to a previous class A Threshold, a Quad 405. It sounds like my old McIntosh 275 tube. And u like NAD amps (class D?)- me too!
    I've owned and or listened for long periods to everything speaker wise, GA Briggs corners, Quad electrostatics, Tannoy GRF's, and presently use Maggie's upstairs and LS35As in the basement. I prefer the point source 3/4 inch dome tweeter of the Rogers LS35a to any 1 inch dome I've heard-greater dispersion leading to a holographic sound stage.Do you think you would you like a 12 inch dome tweeter? Do you think the plasma ion speakers don't produce sound because they are massless?
    But totally agree with you that great sound can be had afford ably. As you said, much depends on mating components, experienced ears and your room.

    Well it has a Bluetooth radio, and that's all digital. At 25 W/ch. @ 8 Ohms it might be just the thing to give Junior so he can have something to hook up to his phone and power castoff speakers and perhaps a DIY sub. I think that most of the time, half the power in the box will go unused. And without a sub line out, it's not all that useful. True DIYers will buy the kit form of the DTA-2 module instead for much less.
    I'm a sucker for nicely made all-metal all-in-one boxes, but this just doesn't inspire. When I search Amazon I find dozens of similar products that aren't the oddball configuration of the Dayton, usually for less money. I can get a smart looking metal box without the Bluetooth radio or sub channels for $40. Here's one with a wireless remote. Another with a mono line out for a powered sub. Oh, yes...more power too!

    Usually, such tiny quazi-amps has no power supply at all, and inside of the gift-box, you'll see dirt-cheap power brick for LED applications instead of audio grade power supply with a large tank of aluminum caps. Typically, such junk bigger twice vs amp case and has impudently overrated specs, and if you remember >1% of school physics, you'll feel it fishy when RMS output power at THD=1% claims 2x60W = 120W powered by 24V 5A (24*5 = 120) power brick )) So for $100 you've to get two boxes - amp and SMPS power brick tied by cheap cable. Try to check how deeply rails voltage drops at THD = 1%@20Hz@4ohm//4ohm and you'll see 10-15W per channel.. Is this HiFi yet? ))
