Great kit Matt. Depending on the knife, I also use the CC4, or the Spyderco Ceramic File Slip (Teardrop shape), or the Spyderco 4" X 2" inch ceramic slip stone sharpener with the leather pouch. All of these are either Fine or Extra Fine & I use them for honing only. I've also found that a white rectangular mechanical pencil eraser cleans the metal from these ceramics while in the field. About once a week I clean these with a plastic scotch Brite pad & some Barkeepers Friend Cleaner to get the extra fine ceramics back to a thoroughly cleaned pristine white surface. For my kitchen & larger fixed blades, I sometimes use the Green Elephant sharpening rod to bring out the razors edge before I go camping. Keep up the great videos! They are very appreciated
Thank you, Matt. I appreciate that your videos express a humility that makes you come across as approachable and caring. That's something that is hard to fake, so I'm sure that you're much the same in person. Thank you for taking a potentially daunting task and presenting it in a simply, easy-to-understand format. Please keep producing more of these high-quality videos!
Excellent video! I learned a lot about hoe to sharpen knives that I did not know before and about consolidating small items into kits according to their function. I will have to save this one on my phone so I can take it with me.
Thank you John! I appreciate your time and interest! I think that is something that some people miss. There is usually more than one way to accomplish a goal. My Granddad always used to say, "There's more than one way to skin a cat" lol. Take care sir!
First awesome and very pleasant intro music ,,, secondly ,, very calm and family friendly videos ,, .. yes I love watching Shawn do his thing with his ruff and tuff let’s get it done mannerism ,, when it comes to younger children wanting to learn things you are the one I suggest they tune into ,, I’m sure you know why .. lol. Thank you so much for your kind words Ken! I truly appreciate you taking the time to tune in and I try hard to provide content that is appropriate for anyone, especially for youth. Shawn is a great instructor and an outstanding TH-camr. He has been providing content to his audience for many faithful years :) I hope he will continue to climb the YT ladder. Thank you again for your interest and support brother and blessings to you and yours.
Thanx for ideas and showing the simplicity of sharpening a knife this us a skill im still working on myself sometimes I just never seem to be able to get it right this will help im sure
I love seeing your videos. You always have a slightly different take on techniques and standards, which I appreciate. Specifically, that you home your cutting tools daily in the field. I haven't heard that from anyone else. Keep up the videos, don't be discouraged. Your work is very much appreciated.
I truly appreciate your kind works Joe. I tend to figure things out on my own so some times I tend to be unorthadox in how I do things (for better or worse:) I appreciate your time, interest and kind words very much!
I rather like ceramic stones and have a couple medium-sized ones I got with a chip-carving set a long time ago. Eventually they get pretty discolored with metal residue, and I found that scouring powder like Chlorox with water and a toothbrush clean them up well. Many thanks.
Nice kit. One thing I would add especially if you are carrying an axe is a 6 inch chainsaw raker file. I prefer the Stihl ones as they are very high quality and reasonably priced if you get them from your local saw shop. Add a small leather square for a guard and you are good to go.
@@blackhatbushcraft good times watching us suffer ? Remembering your experiences ? Well, I hope my suffering brings you a memory lane smile to enhance your experience . :) Bwahahah just picking, Can't wait to see yawl. Gonna be a time. Bring this old man a morphine drip
Hey Matt! Thanks for sharing the techniques. Quick question. I know most people love scandal for the fixed blade knives. I always used one myself until I started using the knives I currently carry (Dan Ferguson/Jeff White). There was a bit of a learning curve to get used to the different grind, but now I love it. So the question is, why does everyone like to use the scandi grind? Honestly, I just used the scandi because it was what everyone said to use but never heard the reason why. Thanks again for sharing your skills. Take care!
Thank you so much for tuning in! It has been quite difficult to film lately just due to time restrictions. I have been trying to recoup my business from 6 months of being shutdown due to the pandemic. Fortunately, things are on the way up but it is taking a lot of hours away from other things. It won't be a permanent problem. I hope to get more regular with the videos again asap. Thank you for your concern and support!
Could not help, nut notice that when you draw your blade away from you that shadow you mentioned returns as you reach the curve and tip of the blade. Maybe something to work on. Thanks for the advise of the repair kit. Would not have thought of the wax. Take care.
I notice that as well. I believe it was simply because I was focusing on staying in frame on the camera screen. Knife sharpening and honing is always awkward to film. Very observant of you to notice :) I know I usually hit it right because that belly of my knives always seems to be the sharpest part. Take care Richard.
@@blackhatbushcraft Thought that might be the case, but had to point it out just in case. Love your vids so far. I look forward to learning more from you.
Hi Stephen, This one was one from a Lansky boxed set. If you look at my Amazon link in the video description, you can see the one I have there is the same. I just added a wooden handle on the end to make it safer when holding. I hope that helps. Thank you for your time and interest!

I usually keep a pencil eraser with my diamond and ceramic stones to clean them. Helps them work better for longer IMHO.

Would something like Palmers Cocoa Butter work like that gixin wax? Random thought
It might possibly. I am guessing it wouldn't be as thick or long lasting. I am not sure how it would do for waterproofing. Interesting thought :)
Matt, where did you buy the ceramic rod? I am interested in getting one if you could kindly point me to where to buy one. -Stephen, Ohio 🇺🇸
