First aid kit is really worthwhile, it makes such a difference if you can clean up an injury and apply a plaster or bandage, and it means you can help someone else too.
Subscribed to your Channel awhile back and just now searching through your videos for your previous content. I really enjoyed this video and it helped me get some more ideas for items to take in my pack and I really loved the prayer book, we always need Gods Word. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and skills to help us learn.
That is an awesome kit Matt! That covers a day hike, to a couple days in the woods in an emergency situation. I love your content and how down to earth you are. Keep the great content coming brother and God bless you and your family!
Thank you so much! I have filmed a video on it's construction but I wasn't happy with the quality as it was done indoors. I hope to film it again soon. Thank you for your interest and kind words!
I need to find a shoulder bag about that size , the 7.62x39 lodged in my back. Makes me and backpacks not get along well . If I don't get better , won't need anything else , as a youngster , had a burlap potato sack cut close to half , lined with cotton material, to keep small thing from loosing out , carried my hunting and fishing kits in it , have carried out 4 raccoons hides out home after hunting, with all my gear . Been watching Dave and Shawn, learning how to build beds up off the ground, never knew this a a youngster
G'day Matt. Yes, if you hadn't guessed, I'm an Aussie.:) I respect a bloke who makes his own gear and look forward to more of your videos. Cheers, mate.
Thank you so much for the kind words Geoff! I appreciate you taking the time to tune in sir. I have had several Aussies connecting here on TH-cam lately! I really enjoy reaching like minded people across the globe like that! Blessings to you down under my friend!
Thank you my friend! The more of my kit that I can produce for myself the more I enjoy using it and feel more connected with it I feel. Self reliance is a very rewarding feeling. I can't wait to learn more and develop skills further to become more and more that way. Take care my friend and keep up the great work!
It is a never ending pursuit :) I do enjoy refining my gear based off of use and what serves me best in the woods. Thank you for tuning in and leaving a kind word! Take care.
As a recent sub I’m still catching up on your channel. What a great find for me! Really appreciate your presentation skills. Some otherwise knowledgeable presenters can come across as arrogant but your down-to-earth style hits this country boy really well. As an older man who grew up in the country, I have quite a few skills already but am always looking to be better. I’m learning a lot from you and appreciate your kit suggestions greatly. Thanks loads!
My kids and I just found your channel, and we’ve probably binged 8 in a row! Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge and passion of our common hobby. All the best to you and yours!
That is awesome Keith! I think it is great that your kids enjoy this type of thing and what a wonderful hobby and passion to share with them! Kudos to you for sharing it with them. I appreciate your kind words and I am very glad you guys are enjoying the videos. I will definitely have much more to come. I have a list of over 30 videos I am ready to film right now and just need the time to get it done. I hope you guys will stay tuned and I wish you all the best as well. Take care!
I personally like the simplicity of your kit! I see some guys packing 50+ pounds sometimes up to 70 and hear them say, "these are all the essentials". I couldn't imagine packing over 30 having done so before and felt the discomfort. Good to see guys have enough and still keep it light. Mine has a wool blanket but besides that is very similar to yours!
Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in! I feel like other than the sleep gear (beyond my hammock) This does give me maybe even more than I really need. I am like you, I don't want to over work myself carrying things I never really use and if I need it and don't have it, hopefully I can improvise off the landscape. The more years I experience, the less pounds I want to "have" to carry. Thank you again for your interest and kind words my friend!
Thank you Andre! I really appreciate you taking the time to watch. I am like you, I find it very interesting to see other's kit and their mindset behind it. Take care my friend!
Jute cordage is also good tinder, if you fluff it up it'll take a spark from a rod or a old style flint and steel. Thanks for the video all the best from Scotland.
Thanks for sharing. I like to see what the experienced consider taking on an outing. I like the pack, hammock, and the leather pouch for your ferro rod.
You had me at using small tweezers to pull off ticks😜 love your videos on kit, don't seem like adverts rather tested endorsements. Love the cooking and instruction vids too🙌
I think this is the first video of yours that I have watched very entertaining and informative I will definitely be watching more of your videos in the future👍👍
Our family just found your channel and subscribed immediately. Thank you for your excellent and family friendly videos. Our boys especially enjoy your trapping series. God bless, from Pennsylvania .
Thank you so much for sharing that! I truly appreciate the sub and I hope you guys will continue to enjoy these videos. Please tell your boys I said hello and feel free to ask any questions you have at any time. Take care and God bless you and your family!
Very, very nice kit!! There are many things that have been discontinued long before their time. Exclusivity has a price 😢Your Sammi sewing kit is sweet…the fact you made it is the cherry!! I’d love to try one myself…any suggestions where to begin? Thanks so very much.
Thanks for the impassioned walk-thru. It is evident that your kit is well thought out. One thing that you didn't mention was the patch of cloth that you are sitting on. I figure it was a quick find item but I hope you can share what it actually it. Thanks
my company made wax cloth back packs in 1980. wax cloth has to be backed up with nylon because it subject to tearing. yoy pack has brown edge binding that i introduced to the industry on 1981. good videos.
Outstanding.your kit is great, like the self make items the best. got to your channel from the shout out from corporals corner, keep up the good work and God bless you brother.
Thank you so much for the kind words brother! I have a lot of respect for Shawn over at Corporals Corner! He has a great channel and is an excellent teacher! I truly appreciate you coming over and subscribing. Welcome to the channel and God bless you and yours as well brother!
I like jute twine. It’s not the strongest but it’s a great disposable cordage. It’s flammable- good fire starter It’s all natural- biodegradable- leave no trace It’s cheap
Nice pack. I do the same type of things when packing a day pack. I also carry a little extra if I have room. I don't have bushcraft training but I do have training from the marines. Never did anything more than an overnight camp. Would love to one week.

Nice kit and nicely presented. Have you considered an emergency poncho for sudden downpours? They are only a dollar and weight next to nothing. I got soaked once on a 1 hour walk and learned the hard way to carry one. I was soaked head to toe! LOL The weatherman got it wrong that day!!! Thanks for sharing it with us.
I do usually carry my anorak which is very lightweight and packable. Prior to that I had a packable rain jacket that goes in and out of the kit depending on conditions. It would be a good addition to add something like you mentioned that could just become a permanent part of the kit. I have 2 55 gallon drum liners in the bag with the tarp and they could become improvised rain gear very easily. Thank you so much for your input and kind words! I really appreciate you tuning in! Take care.
Great kit, Matt. Took me a while to get through the video. with stopping it and going shopping on Amazon and the net for some of the stuff I see. Great presentation.
LOL! Don't I know how that goes:) I have done that myself! Thank you for your interest and the kind words! If there are any items that you have a hard time locating, I am happy to help or share my sources. Just let me know. Take care my friend!
Great kit and vid. So good, I just subbed. I'm looking forward to watching more vids, even if they are only by half as good as this one. I like the cutting board. Thank you for your very interesting video. I enjoyed a lot. Thank you also for the tips about the Mora Eldriss in another video. Greetings from France. God bless you
Really enjoyed watching. I like your approach to bushcraft. I have a Word publishers Bible with genuine leather cover in my bag along with some spectacles so I can read it. This Bible is unique because it is the smallest complete Bible that can be read without a magnifying glass. Text is very readable without reading glasses when I was younger. They do not make them like this anymore. About the size of an Altoids tin.
Thanks for the great video, you’re right the word is always good and refreshing. I liked the homemade rubber bands made from bicycle inner tube‘s. Good idea. May the Lord continue to guide you. Happy trails Luke
Good stuff. Like your kit. Good reasons to carry each of the items. I see that you do not carry any rain gear. Storms can sometimes appear quickly. I know many people dislike Sportsman's Guide, however I ordered the German Army Fleck Pattern Gor-tex Rain suit. The one I received is in great condition and has been well worth my money.
That German surplus gear is very good gear and especially for the money! I have a few pieces of German surplus myself and it is all great stuff. If there is any chance of rain I do usually include a rain jacket in my kit for that day or if I am going for more than a day I do carry one in case. It wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a spare and keep it there always. Thank you for your kind words and suggestion my friend!
Tip for your gloves. Rub in heaps of Dubbin or Snowseal. Put them in a plastic bag, leave in sun so it soaks right through the leather. It will 1. Preserve the leather and youll get more work hours before you wear hes through them 2. Waterproof them, which if you are having to move wet wood, work in rain, you'll soon be thankfull for
I like all of the items that you have shown. You began by saying that this is what you carry for day trips. It seems like a lot of gear for that to me.
I appreciate your kind words John. I do usually carry most of this stuff into the woods and there is often stuff that doesn't always get used. If I were going to stay a night or two I wouldn't have to add much to this at all. Mainly, I like to carry the majority of my gear just to keep myself conditioned to it so that when I do add a blanket or other sleep system for an overnighter, it isn't too much of a jump in weight from what I am used to. I also like to have the gear with me just in case a video of opportunity comes up and I need a piece to my kit to make it happen :) Thank you again for your time and interest John!
You sound like me! I quit the Boy Scouts because they were not prepared enough for me. I do like the idea of carrying extra weight each time you go into the woods to keep yourself in shape.

Not bad. But you wanna ease up on the ''my this....my that" though....too much.
Thumbs up for the soldiers prayer book. Always good to have The Word with you indeed!

I like jute twine. It’s not the strongest but it’s a great disposable cordage.
It’s flammable- good fire starter
It’s all natural- biodegradable- leave no trace
It’s cheap

great video some good kit there
Thank you for mentioning the word from the good book. After all, my connection to nature is a yearning for a closer relationship with God.
That sewing kit is awesome, you should make a video just on it and how you made it.
Myself, I like carrying more jute line , and aochol pads in first aid, for wet weather fire starts, if I can't find rich pine-Fatwood.
Jute is good stuff. It makes a good improvised tinder and it is biodegradable which is a plus. It is cheap too which is nice :) I am a big fan of the Mini Infernos from SRO for those wet weather or quick fires when you don't feel like messing around. Thank you for tuning in and sharing your ideas Roy!
Take care.

Good Morning Matt, Would you please explain the difference between the DC3 & the DC4?
Great kit and vid. So good, I just subbed. I'm looking forward to watching more vids, even if they are only by half as good as this one. I like the cutting board. Pathfinder sells a nice, well made skillet w folding handle and a lid that holds coals, like a Dutch oven. I like your sewing kit and fero rod case a lot! Also, the tinder bag and tool kit.
We have fire ants everywhere here in the south, so the hammock as a chair is a nice idea if you want to sit down longer than 5 minutes in warm weather.
I like to carry a small bottle of Liquid Bandage in my first aid kit. It has antiseptic properties, and it seals out water and dirt far better than a bandaid. I wear contacts, so I like to carry some eye drops in case my eyes get dry, but the drops are also nice if you get debris in your eyes. I also like to carry something waterproof to sit on. That used to be a one foot square piece of foam sleeping mat. But for father's day, I got a Therm-a-Rest Z Seat Cushion Insulated Sitting Pad, which I absolutely love! It weighs 2 oz and folds up nicely.
Solid kit fellow woodsman.
