Eerie to watch the smiling faces of these men who went to war, none of them knowing what was coming! So many of them never came home but here they are being entertained by George Formby, caught on camera to show to future generations like me who know their tragic fate.

Imagine watching this in 1940. Full of British spirit, totally caught up in the war on the home front, bunting in your windows, working in a factory making the same bullets that your sons and nephews are using overseas. Long hours, mucking in, all piss and vinegar and blood and heat, and this is what you watch. This is the end of a long day, at the cinema, this is the joy you’ve longed for for a week or so - the film’s about to start. Here’s formby. Here’s our ant dec, here’s fresh new comedy. And he’s doing his bit, and you know he’s doing his bit, but god is he funny. He’s new, and he’s lewd, and he reminds you of a mate who always makes you laugh. And every word resonates. Yeah, if you aren’t into a bird, don’t complicate it by shagging her. Don’t maul the goods you don’t want. It’s what you talk about with the lads at the Land O’ Cakes on a Saturday. You’re content.

2:00-2:10 those poor young men. You imagine what they went through. What sorrow and what kindness you can promise them. And if it was all worth it. Hundreds of poor teenage and twenty year old boys. Those terrors. Poor, poor boys. Robber of their life.
The EU is right in every way. Avoid any war by any cooperation and a sweet word. So any twenty year old might know a life without death and loss and trauma and shock. I'm so proud to be European, if only to avoid the loss of some young european.
