- Salvi Angeloni (Italy) showing the Brits how to go fast at the 2013 British Model Flying Association National Championship with his beautifully constructed 'Twister', designed in 1954 by Lloyd V Hunt (USA).
This model is constructed using traditional tissue reinforced Balsa and is powered by a Cox Tee Dee .049 engine from 1961, making it eligible for the Classic Speed class. Fuel tank is 7cc capacity. Fuel is a mix of Methanol, nitromethane and castor oil. Propeller 4.5 x 5". Speed is just over 85 mph on 42' music wire lines.
Salvi explained that the model was designed as a trainer for Control Line speed flying and he has made a range of sizes for engines from -020 to .40 cu. in. size. He said they all easy to fly, fun and cheap. This model weighs 145 gr. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

I was a coward that way, I used a small electric starter that got them running in a flash. From the first .010 to. 020s .049 .074 and .09. I used it. Never bothered with the spring starters, I removed them, they got in the way. When I didn't use a starter I usually wound up in bandages. And I've donated to the Cox bloodbank many times.
Nothing more nostalgic than the scream of an 0.049 Cox engine!

35 years ago, my first airplane was a control line with a Cox 0.049. But with spring start (luxury model, ha). Then moved to a Gentle Lady with the same Cox strapped with elastic bands to the wing. First 20 or so flights lasted no more than a few seconds and each was followed by weeks of repairs. Many years, broken planes, bruised fingers and a few nasty cuts later, I mostly fly electric and a "boring" electronic ignition IC 4 stroke engine (does not stall, spit oil or smoke). But I do miss those Cox engines.
Anyone over 40 flying today probably hit his oil-covered fingers with these tiny propellers more than once.
Yup! I'm 45 and started my rc flying doing these string line planes and also had self flying helicopters. So much fun, but the dreaded propeller to finger I'll never forget! Good times!!
Nobody, but nobody could crash a Cox airplane with a.049 baby bee engine better than I could. I went through way to many of them. Especially the P51's. Lord, that's 50 years ago!!

I believe three that I stuffed were those ( Testors? ) one off plastic planes with the V tail. I almost didn't get into aviation at all!! Lol!!! These days I fly conventional and thermal...just fine!
I remember trying to start a.049 attached to a pt-19, if memory serves me, on winter's day in New England, The motor kicked back on me and cut my knuckle to the bone. I still have the scar from that mishap 50-55 yrs ago. Nothing like nitro methene on flesh -+ 32F weather!

I’m 58 and I still have my .049 in my desk . Ive had it since new from the early 70’s
Best thing would be to build a model for it. There are many designs of many types of model and a lot of people to help.
@@peterg2yt let’s put it this way - my uncle owned a hobby shop - I always had a plane and a car when I was young - now I have other things that keep my attention . Still brings back a smile when I was a kid - the engine is a cox gold series - engine and tank .

I think that the reason for not using a starter spring was because this was a (successful) attempt at a new UK speed record in this class and the spring would add a little more weight and make a little more aerodynamic drag… anyhow, as you see, Salvi got it started fine! Thanks for the comment. 🇺🇦
I've seen little electric starters sized for the .049 and the one I have struggles with the .074 and won't turn over the .09. Cox made a limited number of of .09s and even a .15. The .09 was the loudest engine I have ever heard and revved to scary rpms. I put a carburetor and muffler on it to tame it. It ripped the firewall off of many of my airplanes. Truly a beast.
Learned to fly like this back in the 50's. Still remember the sound, hand crank and smell of fuel. Part of a training class took place inside the YMCA on a basket ball court. Great fun and didn't cost you a fortune. Plastic kits came along later with a spring loaded starter on prop and held together with rubber bands. If ya crashed just needed some rubber bands and your back flying I had the PT-19.

Yes, technology was pretty new and to help promote the fly by wire, hobby shops schedule training classes and in case of bad weather had the YMCA as backup.Those 049s really are noisy inside, but flew great.with no wind. Good pilots could do loops, but flying straight and level easier. Tons of fun.
Training? What? Where I grew up your level of training was easily observed by the number of small cuts in your fingers.
Seriously, there was no RC community where I lived. Training would have been great and would had saved me many many hours of repairs.

Roger that, it was good size, and the wings were held on by rubber bands. That was really some innovative engineering, saved me many times and I carried a pocket full of rubber bands :-) Another thing that helped me was we had curved curbs instead of standard. I could us that as a launch ramp - like the British Aircraft Carriers today and get airborne more quickly. Man I think I'm talking myself into getting back to flying again ...
As I remember - this was a perfect way to remove nails from fingers :-)

Back in the 70's my C/L models were powered by Davis Charlton diesels (my first was the Merlin 0.75cc) . Cheap and no battery needed.
Mine were powered by Isle of Man DC diesels too (in the 60’s), but they were nowhere near as fast as this!

Audience, I remember growing up, when my parents bought me a gas plane from Sears & Roebuck. I used a D battery, and RC fuel to start it. That finger will get nipped if you don't retract it fast. It was controlled by the same string for up and down. The fuel had to run out to stop it, and by the time I was dizzy. It was allot of fun at 9 years old. The next year after that my mother bought me my first RC electric sports car. It was really fast too. I was the ONLY kid in my neighborhood with all these crazy toys. I now own two drones, and a gas RCMAX 80cc. Being a kid never dies, because it's FOREVER memories🤜🏼🤛🏼🙌🏼.
A large part of why I fly these is the nostalgia. Glad you seem to have enjoyed it.

I still have a couple of those .049 engines in my airplane gear. They were great to start with. I know what you mean by the old good smell of burning Nitro fuel! Lovely smell! Then I saw some one at a club doing RC and there was no going back for me! Haven't been active for awhile but I Love ❤️ the sport Hobby of building Flying and rebuild after a crash! May still get back into it again 😃. Happy Flying!

Depends on the type of Cox engine' a Killer Bee engine 22,000 VS Reg Cox engine 12000. RPM) with high Nitro fuel on a balsa plane can be like greased lightning - Just an FYI.

Then changed back to normal afterwards.
Engine is normally started with 'rich' fuel mixture, so its turning over fairly slowly to start with and then is leaned out to get optimum fuel/air setting... quite normal.

It is the current UK class record for the category and engine size… just over 80mph, but other classes go up to over 200mph, but on longer lines.
I wonder how fast my airplane flew when I knocked the outboard wing off and the engine decided to break the rpm record for as long as it could. My own unreliable designs sometime surprised me. The wreckage is still in storage. Someday...
Been flying RC for ages but, I crashed every Cox and Testors U-control I ever owned before then. Within the first couple revolutions. I even cried my eyes out over one of these because I got so discouraged about flying anything. Still couldn't fly one probably! Its the toughest type of model aircraft flying there is.
You were not a true Cox fan unless your index finger was completely scarred from the propeller impacts trying to start the engine.
Sad to know in this day an age you can’t make those engines because the lawsuits for personal injury would come as soon as the first one is sold to a customer.
There are actually quite a few current manufacturers of model I/c engines. Modern racing engines make a huge amount more power than vintage engines like this…

Focusing on the airplane doesn't allow you to get as dizzy as you would think.
The staggering comes after you stop spinning. Your brain keeps spinning and sometimes gravity says "uh uh". Then all spinning stops.

wow, what propeller do you mount? length and type of cables?
As I mentioned in the writ-up, the cables are 42 foot long wire. The wire is high carbon content 'spring' steel, but not heat treated. Diameter is .010". Propeller 4.5 diameter and 5" pitch.

I had a Cox Supersport when I was a kid. it was purple. Looked badass. Too bad i sucked as a pilot and couldn't fly it worth two shits. Crashed every time.

I had a one that you charged with a big battery, (whatever the big square battery is, I can’t remember the size), anyway I got it from k-mart, it was a pretty good size place, it was a fighting tiger, I never got it off the ground, never had enough power, I’m sure I was doing something wrong.
If you bought it from K-Mart as a model it was moulded (molded if you are in USA) from plastic and would have been WAY heavier than this model. Also your fuel wouldn't have been as 'hot' as Salvi was using, also your propeller would not have been as efficient as this one (which is a standard APC from USA).

That finger looked like it was stinging at first, but then the rotations...I would be dizzy and out of control, or just numb or something. Hell, it's a new year, perhaps I should spend hundreds on a new persuit
I used to hate that. At the end of day, the fingers struck by the propeller, the blood, the pain and the giddiness after spinning around and around like a ballerina. God, I hated all that. Imagine a size 25, 40 or even a 60 OS engines with bigger propellers, what it felt like being struck by those props. 😖😫😭
You are welcome to your thoughts and memories. I really enjoy it and fly much faster models with much higher rotational speeds than this. Its all a matter of what you get used to... or WANT to get used to. Electric starters take away all the paina nd blood!

Maybe you never tried it.. its the only form of model flight where you feel direct feedback from the model in flight… everyone to their own though…
Hi, Bob! 🙂 It came from a time when the only aeromodelling options were free-flight, this, or nothing. Getting into RC was unbelievably expensive (for both kids and grown-ups) - the equivalent of buying a car today - so people took up control-line as the only affordable way to have direct contact with a model in flight.
I tried it for a while, building very large, light, sluggish planes that flew slowly enough to enjoy the manoeuvrability, but I still couldn't cope with the constant turning, so I stuck with free-flight and saved up for my first radio set.
Some people stay with control-line because it's the only form of model flying with direct feedback from the controls. There's always the pull, the sensation of speed, and in big models you can even feel the turbulence at the onset of the stall (just like holding the control column in a full-sized aircraft).
RC is great; there's no dizziness, but... there's also no 'feel'. Compared to control-line it's like watching a video of someone else flying, rather than doing it yourself. 😁
@@EleanorPeterson That's a very good explanation . I fly scaled up versions of Keil Kraft rubber models such as the Senator and Contestor with mini RC and electric power . I feel pretty connected when I'm flying figure eights at zero feet or taking them up high and riding the wind for half an hour . I did try control line with a Veron Colt and a DC Wasp but my Father was an aircraft inspector who explained the theory of flight to me at a very young age . The words brick and string still resonate to this day .

now i had a cheap plane like $80 batterys died mid flight after 10 minutes could i mount one of these or even my cox.10 even with no throttle i think it would be fun fly till runs empty land and go again or quit would it work or at that speed would it crash my controlls weigh about the same as the motor
May be that your electric motor is more powerful than a Cox .010. Why not give it a try!? There is not usually a throttle on a C/L model aeroplane. Just fly til the fuel runs out.
