As someone new to anime, watching retro shows like these helps me appreciate the medium so much more and how amazing stories were being told even way back then.
Star Ocean Ex is certainly an interesting show. Being an adaptation of the much better game I wouldn't call it anything amazing but I do like it and absolutely love the opening.
This is around the time that anime productions started incorporating digital techniques into their animation, and also when the 20th century generation of animators started retiring and handing over the reins of the industry to the next, you can tell by the shaky consistency in quality one would expect in such a transition.
Loved the game. Always a bummer when it feels like the anime adaptations miss the mark on the tone and musical stylings. It had such a good OST to boot.
this one and the manga are far superior, the manga probably being my favourite. but the original one is also very cute and very unique, like classic 90s anime where characters look a bit more realistic and grown up. she looks the most mature in the original.
Star Ocean anime is based on Star Ocean 2 the game, really good series with some memorable moments straight from the game but taken to higher stakes. The fight against the Plant Girl with tentacles was one of my fav moments in this series.
I played the game when it came out without knowing anything beyond what was in it, and because of her weapon I always pictured Rena as a farmgirl brawler, a tomboy with some dirt, but very sweet and when I saw this show realized I had been very very wrong.

Game wise the anime only covers up to the END of the PS1 versions disc 1 then again most anime based on video games almost NEVER cover the entire game itself.
Star Ocean 2 - needs a Cel shading remake. Not something looking like the games they are making currently, as they are visual trash. More like a Dragon Quest type shaders game remake. Or an anime film similar to what was made for Ni No Kuni. A decent level of stylization to honor the franchise. Not the trash they are making Star Ocean to be in last 15 years.

Can't believe I once able to watch it in TV, full season, when a number of cartoon I watch can somehow cancel midway (maybe not enough view).
I know I had played and enjoyed the Star Ocean: The Second Story videogame...had no idea there was a enjoyable anime as well 😅
