While I can see lots of core elements that can be seen in Sailor Moon, these works completely different from what we know as 'Magical Girls.' The magical girls from the 80s look like ordinary Magical girls with special powers. And not uniformed defenders of justice and champion of love who fights bad guys. These girls look like they solve everyday problems, not Youma problems.
There's multiple subgenre of Maho Shojo. Most of the time, we considers that there's three: classical, warrior and subversive. Creamy Mami, Sally The Witch or Ojamajo Doremi are classical, while Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura or Pretty Cure are warrior. I'd like to note that Maho Shojo, contrary to popular belief, isn't about girls having a transformation sequence and fighting monsters in frilly dresses. It's about empowered female individuals using magic and feminine traits in the name of good.

Obviously it can go either way considering how Japanese works I know, but considering the possibilities of puns/wordplay in their spells it makes think what's best to use. Also Yuu/Mami's transformation spell isn't subtitled in the OVA clip, but I guess to be fair that'd be a lot of text? ^^;

One thing I don't like about this types of magical girls, is they promote making little girls turn into women, and usually in skimpy clothing. Fancy Lala is the same, but the finale suberted it and made the message that despite she lost the ability to be Fancy Lala. She has to live her young fully, and that maybe one day, she may become the real Fancy Lala.
I think that "girl turn into women" tropes was popular because they were supposed to be escapist show for little girls, and many children dream to turn into adults.
More or less they all learn that lesson in the end and they're happy to go back to their normal life, knowing if they work hard they can become what they want, in the future 🙂
