POWER OUTAGE / LIVING WITHOUT ELECTRICITY!

  • We lived without electricity and power for a few days because of high winds that we rarely get! It was a good experience for us and we received a new gratefulness for all our modern conveniences!
Here is the recipe for my easy cobbler!
    Easy batter fruit cobbler
1 stick butter melted in cake pan
    1 1/2 cups flour
    1 1/2 cup sugar
    2 teaspoons baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 1/2 cups milk
4 cups fruit of any kind
    1 tablespoon sugar
After butter is melted, pour batter over butter. Then sprinkle fruit on top. Sprinkle 1 to 2 tablespoons of sugar on top of fruit. Bake one hour at 350°.
As it bakes the batter will rise to the top and cover all the fruit!
This is such a quick and easy dessert to make! And very good with whip cream or ice cream or cold milk! :-)

This reminds me of a time long ago when there had been a bad ice storm in our area. Of course we lost power but we had a wood stove and I’ve cooked on one many times in my life. I had a big pantry fully stocked and two freezers that we moved outside onto the back porch to keep them frozen. The children and I chipped huge ice sickles from around the house and set them in our refrigerator to keep things cold, I replaced them and dumped the tray they were in as they melted. My husband at the time was worried and frustrated and it only made our children worry when they saw dad being upset. I kept right on humming and laughing and had the children help me gather the candles and lanterns. I let let them dress up like their favorite tv show little house on the prairie. We all chopped the veggies and I let each one take a turn at kneading the bread. I showed them how to heat the Dutch oven and lid on the wood stove, how to put a trivet made out of canning lids in the bottom to keep the bread from burning. Anyway we sat down to eat dinner and our 12 year old son lead the prayer, he said how grateful he was that we were all warm and had food to eat, that he prayed those around us were also warm and fed. He thanked God and his mom and dad for knowing how to do these things. I said amen and when I looked up my husband had tears running down his face. He went over and hugged our son and told him thank you for reminding him of all we do have and to be grateful to god. After supper they went around to a few neighbors to make sure everyone had heat and food. It was the best time we’d ever had in winter.

Those are special memories your family has from the ice storm! Thank you for sharing in detail all that you did with your family to get through meals, etc. without any power. How long were you without electricity?

@Living Life What a beautiful testimony sister! Hard times seem to either draw people together or drive them apart. Always being thankful to God for what we have always assures us that we will draw closer to Him and each other! I love how your son showed the love of the Lord by checking on the neighbors (love your neighbors!) and praying and honoring ya'll his parents by thanking you! All kids should be raised in the ways of the Lord! God bless you and everyone!🤗🕊🔥💖✝️💕❣

Don’t forget about the generator safety tips as well. Remember it’s important to follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your generator. Here are the generator safety tips:
      1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards.
      2) Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house.
      3) 🔥generators cause fire hazards too. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules.
      4) generator operation; make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords.
th-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/w-d-xo.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps

We really enjoy your channel. It's nice to see a family pray and eat together. Its a shame that I'm even saying that, it shouldn't be unique it should be the norm. One thing that interest me about your life style is getting a glimpse into your daily routine and time management. I have a business and was fortunate enough to recently open a second location. My wife and I are not nearly as self sufficient as you and our children are raised and out of the house. I would be interested at a behind the scenes look at your sunup to sundown routine. I can't imagine how you find enough time to run multiple businesses, be active in the community ,grow and raise your food and not to mention raise what appears to be a wonderful family. If you could take us through your day, I think it would make for an interesting series of videos. Just my thoughts. God bless and please stay healthy .

Priscilla, you and the family take this all in stride. Your Amish childhood helped prepare you seamlessly for times such as you are enduring now with no electricity. Your soup and cobbler looked delicious and it was greatly appreciated by your family. It was also good to see everyone pitch to help with cleaning up the dishes and the kitchen--all good training for your children. I hope things get back to normal for you soon. Your channel really highlights time and time again what is really important in our lives. God Bless till next time.

Here is a reminder about generator safety: this advice is for if you plan to get a portable generator or if you use portable generators. this is also a reminder for everyone’s safety. This is just to make sure you are aware of all the warnings. Every year after hurricane and winter storms, there were reports on the news that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution during a power outage. There were reports about deaths when using generators when the power was out. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide-and-seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. th-cam.com/video/I1jT3ANENvI/w-d-xo.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators. Hope this helps. Thank you. Remember not to put your children at risk too.

Not a lot of safety and maintenance is required if you only have a home standby generator or solar panels.

Making do at times like a power outage makes us realize we can survive without electricity for awhile. Several years ago an ice storm took out our power for 5 or 6 days and we used a gas generator which was hard on John keeping filling it up so a couple of years ago we went on and got a whole house generator and it gives us peace of mind. God bless❤️😊❤️

As a child it was always so exciting and fun when the power went off. We got to do things the old-fashioned way! And it always made our home feel cozy and warm, quieter and safer. As an adult, a parent, the same feelings are there, but so are the concerns. I really don’t relish the idea of washing clothes by hand! Thank you so much for sharing!

You mentioned that your electricity has gone out often. I live in Central Oregon where it is windy and we use to have the power go off and back on so often that there was no need to bother resetting clocks on the stove and microwave. After many years of this I was talking to a retired power company lineman and he said when power goes off and comes back on it's because of slack in the power line. After going off and on about 6 times one day, I called the power company and was told that the more people who called in would help them find the problem. That afternoon they called and found the problem and no problem since. Down lines are a different problem though.

You could get gas lamps like I had in my Amish home growing up, they're actually brighter than light bulbs and economical. We'd use kerosene lamps to go up the unheated stairs to a very cold bedroom and jump under the quilts. Love your videos and your family. Really enjoy a peek into your lives as you share your day to day experiences. Coming from someone who experiences power outage frequently , I would recommend getting a cheap propane powered stove and placing in your basement or garage. Even though they are electric ignited, it is always possible to light the stove top with a match. Boy is it nice to still be able to cook on a stove top when the power is out.

I am sorry that you have no electricity and I hope it comes on soon for you. Everything looks cozy and lovely by lantern light, but i agree I wouldn't want to do it every day. I did go without hot water for 3 months a few years back, so I had to boil water for everything; bathing, cooking, etc. Wising you a happy, peaceful night.

Please don’t forget about the generator safety tips.
