This is the Orion Motor Tech tailgate shock. It is an Amazon item and it works great. I purchased this for my truck and installed it. It installs pretty easy and really helps carry the load on the weight of your tailgate, both up and down.

i just got a set but should i buy 2 of em one for both sides or do i just need one

I only used one. It works for me no problem. I have a heavy tailgate but no more falling open with this.
