Norinco T97 Bullpup: The Type 97/QBZ 95 Back in Canada

  • The latest version of the Norinco T97, imported by North Sylva as the T97NSR, manufactured by EMI aka Norinco in the People's Republic of China. This bullpup 5.56 rifle is non-restricted in Canada, and accepts most AR-15 magazines.
    This rifle uses a short stroke gas piston and a rotating bolt, along with a reciprocating charging handle.
    The T97 was originally imported as non-restricted until an RCMP investigation discovered that they could be easily converted to full-auto. That model was re-classified as a prohibited firearm and all those in private hands were confiscated (I believe the federal government paid $800 each for them to the owners).

    Also, I think the simplicity of the T97 is a real selling point. It's so simple to disassemble, and the cleaning kit it comes with is really awesome. It also keeps very clean, as with all piston guns. Accuracywise, with the after market mount from SFRC and a very inexpensive scope, I'm able to get 5 round, 1" groups at 50 yards.

      I also mounted a scope but cheeck rest was to low so I bought a Magpul cheeck riser on EBay that I cut whit Dremel to fit perfect and put some velcro now sits very tight

    That was a fair assessment of a Type 97. It is most definitely not on par with a Tavor or AUG. It is non-restricted and inexpensive but lacks the ergonomics of a fighting firearm. Solid video.

      Mathaius833 I always look at that broomhandle grip and say "no thanks." It was a revolutionary gun when it first came out, and the Australians have done well with theirs, but personally I wouldn't buy one either.

    • @WilliamGuse
      @WilliamGuse 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mathaius833, Thanks, but my opinion on firearms is not based off some COD fantasy. Spent time using F88S-A1Cs and SA-80s (after the HK mod) in operational environment. The AUG is fair superior to a Type 97. And has advantages over the Tavor especially in the A5 variant. First saw the Tavor close up six years ago while in South East Asia. Impressed by the feedback by some of my Israeli buddies. That the reason for my preferences.

    The magazine release for type 97 is a specific modification for export purpose to adapt standard AR magazines. But Norinco obviously didn't put much thought in it. But that's not what the Chinese army uses. The type 95 used by Chinese Army has an AK like magazine release.
    The safety switch is a little bit awkward on type 95 too, but since the gun is pretty light and has a good balanced on one hand, Chinese soldiers are trained to handle the switch with left hands. Put your left hand on the stock, when you can feel the bump, your thumb will be right on the switch. It's still not quite convenience but at least you don't have to use your eyes to check where the switch is :).

      I dont have a problem with the mag release, For me I come back with my right hand off the pistol grip and change the mag. I dont understand why people use their left hand when it feels fucking horrible, but using your right hand feels alot better.

  • @jakes.3582
    @jakes.3582 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, the original QBZ-95's mag release is AK style. You can do a tactical reload by hitting the mag release with a fresh mag. Type 97 has been modified to take STANAG, with an AR style mag release. And in QBZ 95-1, the safety is within reach of your thumb.

    As somebody who has yet to get their PAL, I find it so weird that this is non-restricted yet an AR-15 is. So I guess guns aren't restricted because they look "scary". I find the reasonings very confusing.

    • @Tar21TVpresspass
      @Tar21TVpresspass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Colton Blumhagen It's a right mess. It all boils down the regulations laid out in SOR/98-462 and the meaning of the word variant. Those guns, and guns like them, were deemed "too dangerous" at the time the law was written. But of course new firearms are like new iphones: there's something different every year. So the law hasn't really kept up.
      Of course, there's also nothing more "dangerous" about the firearms on that list than any other firearm. Canadian Firearms law is a prime example what is known as Security Theater.

  • @comrademustard8902

    Well... Type 97 is a civilian version of Type 95 that fires NATO 556 only, so it doesn't have any room to add a red dot or a grenade launcher. But for a real type 95, it can add many things.

    On the second case of ammo with mine and with the proper mags (Gen 2 PMAGS) it's beem 100% reliable. Now if somebody would come out with a trigger mod and proper mag release it may be the best non-restricted for under a $1000 you can buy.

    Check out My Little T97 vid, the barrel clamp mounted TRS25 has held zero after 500 rounds, shoots to 4 MOA, and cowitnesses perfectly with the irons set to 100. The dot is a bit higher than the front post with the 500 yard setting, but the 500 is the easiest to use the red dot with.

    Question for anyone that might know:
    If "QB Zed-95" (as opposed to "QB ZEE-95") is the proper military pronunciation for the QBZ-95, then what is the proper military pronunciation for the weapon's LMG variant: the QBB-95? I'm assuming its not "QB BEE-95"... Maybe the "QB Bravo", "QB Boy", or "QB Baker"...?
    I'm a curious and confused gamer from Battlefield 4 who really likes both of these weapons, but for the longest time has called them both the "QB ZEE" and "QB BEE", which sounds stupid and confusing, especially with the QBB.

      +silentf0e I'm not too sure if I get your question, but QBZ and QBB are simply the official/classification names of these weapons. QBZ stands for Qiang (rifle) Bu (Infantry) Zidong (automatic) in Chinese and Qiang (rifle) Bu (infantry) Banyong (squad). As to zed and zee, its just the different pronunciation of the character Z in English and American English. As much as I know, the military pronunciation is in Chinese simply as 95 shi zi dong bu qiang (type 95 automatic rifle) or 95 shi ban yong ji qiang (type 95 squad machine gun)

    is the mag riveted to 10 rounds?

    • @batlad
      @batlad 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A mag intended for a semi-auto rifle is limited to 5 rounds, so the Canadian mag is riveted at 5 rnds. If you can find AR mags that are labelled as being manufactured for an AR pistol, like the Rock River LAR-15 mags, then it's 10 rnds.
      The mag that comes with this rifle is obviously intended for this RIFLE, so it'll be limited to 5 rnds.

      Villnius Well said sir! Interestingly, the magwell on the T97 is so tight that it struggles with certain brands of pistol and beowulf magazines. It is much more selective than the Tavor when it comes to Mag options.

    I thought all centre fire semi autos were restricted?

    • @Tar21TVpresspass
      @Tar21TVpresspass  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not at all. You should learn our own laws better! There are lots of dedicated semi-auto hunting rifles, and a few sporting rifles like this one that are non-restricted. The key issue is barrel length and variants. If its a variant of a controlled rifle you're hooped, and if its a short barreled semi you're restricted, but anything else is good to go!

      TV-PressPass That's why I was asking, you should learn to not answer questions like a huge douche better! You are right, I was reading the regs on the RCMP website wrong, I didn't notice the "and" in between the conditions, and I only started the CFSC last night.

      You're right, Canadian gun laws are complex and don't make a lot of sense. If you're not already involved in the community there's a lot to learn. Your PAL exam is a good place to start though! Just wait till you get into the mess of mag capacities ;)

      +Hanny conner This is based on the Chinese miltiary spec version called the QBZ-95-1 which is quite different, the Chinese milispec 95-1 has a superior safety, trigger, barrel and mag release mechanisms and I believe chambers their newer heavier round.
      However, the QBZ-03 seems to be the hot shit in the Chinese army now.

      Bullpup .223 rifles that are both non-restricted in Canada and compatible with Stanag magazines? Sound pretty similar to me! The fact that I get daily questions of T97 vs Tavor says that other people are curious too!

    • @FlyinJMan
      @FlyinJMan 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see Israeli and Chinese weapons as separate weapons altogether, though they may be the same caliber and design. When comparing, it's the AK-M16 ideology I have. You may not think that way, but that's how I do.
