"The loneliness of a long distance runner" isn't a cheesy title, it's a book and subsequent movie reference. A lot of Maiden songs are about this or that book, movie, theater piece, from which they borrow the title. The Prisoner, Murders in the rue Morgue, Days of Future Past, etc.

The Assassin is one of their worst songs, along with “Gambler” and “Apparition”. “Weekend” is appalling, too.

I am 55 years old and a fan since '82... not going to argue with fun ranking videos but AMOLD, in my opinion, might be their greatest work... like you, I am a bigger fan of their first 5-records, but you have A Matter of Life and Death way under-appreciated in this list.

I agree the first 4 albums are the best. Personally, I rank them: 1. Killers. 2. Debut Iron Maiden, 3. Number of the Beast, 4. Piece of Mind. To me, Harris and Murray have always been the main driving forces in Maiden. I rank the albums according to over songwriting, and musicianship. To me, Clive Burr was ever bit as good as Nicko, health issues drove Burr out of the band, and D'Anno was different than Dickenson, but every bit as good in his own way. D'Anno did not like the fame, I know it sounds weird, but it's true. I remember Bruce, Bruce from his days in Sampson.

Great list. I love seeing everyone's different preferences and reasonings. None are alike but we're all a part of the Maiden family. I don't dislike any of the albums, just I prefer some over others in terms of how they spoke to me. Which kills me as Piece Of Mind is lower on my list than most others, and I appreciate the album more than I did when I first picked it up, but others do more for me. But here's my list:

@@brucedickinson12 Yeah I know. But for some reasons Life & death does not do much for me. I just can't seem to get into that album. I've listened to that album so many times and saw them on that tour as well, but for some reason I just can't get into it. It's not a bad album, it just doesn't have any intensity in the songs. These Colours Don't Run could have been the next Trooper. Virtual at least has some more intensity to the songs plus they are shorter. Yeah, it has the Angel & the Gambler, but it does have some good songs like Future Real, Clansman, and Lightning Strikes Twice. Is Virtual XI a Classic, no, Is it a horrible album, no. My rating is
A Matter of Life & Death gets a 3.6 and Virtual XI gets a 3.84

My list, best to worst… a caveat, I’ve been a fan since Powerslave when I was in high school, so that’s where I came in. Also, I actually wrote this before listening to your full ranking…
    1. Powerslave - All killer, no filler. Monster classics. Legendary album. Legendary cover art.
    2. Piece of Mind - Side 1 is one of my perfect album sides, I can do without Quest for Fire, but an amazing milestone album. Sometimes my No. 1.
    3. A Matter of Life and Death - I don’t skip any of the first eight songs on this. Epic after epic after guitar-laden epic. Love it to death.
    4. Somewhere in Time - The guitar work is impressive all over this album, and Bruce Dickinson sounds at the peak of his powers. The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner is based on the short story of the same name, and contains outstanding guitar solos.
    5. Brave New World - The reunion album with Bruce and Adrian back in the band. Hell yes! Another album I rarely skip songs on. The Wicker Man is my favorite album opener, and the cover art is one of my favorites.
    6. Killers - Great raw NWOBHM sound, Paul Di’Anno sounds better than the debut. Some monster classics here.
    7. Number of the Beast - The breakthrough album with Bruce. Hallowed Be Thy Name is my favorite Maiden song. Some bonafide classics, like the underrated The Prisoner. Should have had Total Eclipse on this.
    8. Senjutsu - This started out about No. 12 for me and has just risen in my esteem. Many really good tracks on here, and I particularly love Hell On Earth and The Parchment.
    9. Seventh Son of A Seventh Son - The concept album idea is ok, it’s just not a big favorite of mine. A few songs I love (I have belted out The Evil That Men Do in the car), others are kind of “meh.”
    10. Dance of Death - Good but not great album, there’s still the deep cut excellence of Montsegur and the epic Paschendale.
    11. Iron Maiden - Raw debut, but you can see good bones here, so to speak. Phantom of the Opera is an all-time classic.
    12. Fear of the Dark - The title track alone moves this up a couple of notches for me. Not a fan of “raspy Bruce,” but there’s a few other good tracks here.
    13. The Final Frontier - Hate the opening Satellite 15, wish they just started with the title track. I love Coming Home, my favorite song on this album. Rather muddy production to my ears.
    14. The Book of Souls - Still the darker, sludgy production as on The Final Frontier, and it’s too darn long. That said, I do enjoy Empire of the Clouds and The Red and the Black.
    15. No Prayer for the Dying - I definitely dislike Bruce’s raspy style on this, but Holy Smoke is fun and I enjoy Tailgunner and Run Silent, Run Deep - and little else.
16/17. The two Blaze Bayley albums, The X Factor and Virtual XI. Apart from the classics The Sign of the Cross and The Clansman (which sound better sung by Bruce), I find most of these two albums dark, depressing and unlistenable.

Maiden was in my top three favorite bands when I was in high school. I’ve been back on Maiden for a few weeks. I seen them live on somewhere in Time, and seven son of a seventh son tours. I stopped listening to them in the early 90s because I wasn’t a fan of what they were putting out. I decided to give them a listen again. I recently purchased Apple Music and I decided to go through the whole discography. I started with Senjutsu the recent album and I have to disagree with you. Let me tell you it brought me back to that time period. I think it’s a fantastic album for Maiden to put out so late in their career. I wasn’t crazy about the Blaze Bailey stuff. Most of the stuff 90s and forward is hit or miss. Every album through the years has a couple standout tracks. The thing I regret most is not going to see them live since 88. Shame on me. I’ve wanted to on a number of occasions, but never made it. If they do it again I’m definitely going with no excuses. My favorites are probably Powerslave, The Number of the Beast, Somewhere in Time, Peace of Mind, Senjutsu. Brave New World is pretty good. It all depends on my mood what’s my favorite, but it’s usually between The Number of the Beast, and Powerslave.

I think the band means Virtual Chi with the album 'Virtual XI'. That's the same pronouncement with 'The X factor'. You don't call it The Tenth Factor.

Iron maiden is my favorite band of all time even though Ronnie James Dio is my favorite singer
I have been listening to maiden since I was I can't be the only one who loves The x Factor and no prayer for dying.
Although I have to say seventh son of a seventh son or fear of the dark.
But honestly my favorite iron maiden album is whichever one I am listening to at that..

  • @Femaiden
    @Femaiden ปีที่แล้ว +1

I must say, doing this is tough because i dn't think they have ever released a bad album. if i had to do a tier list, none of these would be below "A" tier and half of them would be S and then i would have to invent special double S and triple S tiers. . .except maybe no prayer and killers, i would put those in B
i was originally on the "i hate the replacement singer" bandwagon, but many songs from the blaze bayley albums are some of the best things iron maiden has put out.
the clansman, when two worlds collide, futureal, lord of the flies, man on the edge, edge of darkness are all top tier songs, but then again, i guess you are ranking whole albums. .
but then again, , bruce wasn't the original singer either, and the first 2 albums, the eponymous one and killers are kinda mediocre, compared to number of the beast which is when Bruce became the singer and then they really started to get good and never stopped even through X factor and virtual XI (which are kind of clever, because X is the 10th album and XI is the eleventh, get it? roman numerals? although, i like to pronounce xi as "zai" and not "eleven". it rolls off the tongue better. "virtual zai" i know it doesn't make sense, but i like how it sounds.
and then brave new world was just a masterpiece, a great comback for bruce.
honesllty, i think their 3 most recent albums have fallen short, but they are still better than the first 2. no prayer for the dying is also bottom tier as well IMO.
if i just ranked them in order of my favorite to least, it would be
    #1 number of the beast
    #2 powerslave
    #3 piece of mind
    #4 brave new world
    #5 somewhere in time
    #6 dance of Death
    #7 x factor
    #8 virtual xi
#9 seventh son of seventh son
    #10 fear of the dark
    #11 final frontier
#12 matter of life and death
    #13 senjutsu
    #14 book of souls
    #15 iron maiden
    #16 killers
#17 no prayer for the dying
again, i reiterate. i love all of these, but if i have to put them in order, this is the order.
if i put them in orer of most listened to though, then
    brave new world,
    x factor
    somewhere in time
    virtual xi
    dance of death
    seventh son
are my most listened to albums by them

I'd have to place Book of Souls as my least favorite then Senjutsu. The albums have just become too bloated for my taste. I think the songs are better on Senjetsu than Book of Souls, but they're still kind of not the best, being that I don't find the songs memorable. Once the albums are over I can't remember much about them.

It’s almost like you have to separate their catalog into eras. The first 2, golden era from NOTB to Powerslave. Experimental with SIT and 7th son. Slight downfall with the next 2. Blaze Bailey era, and reunion since 2000.
