    Thank you, so glad I found this video last week. My replacement LED’s and suction cups showed up today, and I fixed my 75inch for under $100. The tv was only 3 years old, so it was a relief to be able to fix this myself. I recommend blocking off 3-4 hours of limited interruption and a large organized space for this project.

      RIght? I've only had my 70" for about 3 years and the whole screen (except for the top right corner) is completely dark and has lost it's color. As someone who frequently plays video games, it was very annoying and aggravating lol

    Thanks for the video. Successfully completed the led replacement in about 2 hours. The new strips appear to be a brighter white led vs the oem which had more of a blue hue. The double stick tape supplied with the new strips also eliminated the need for all the pins to hold the strips in place. I wouldn't recommend this effort solely for an upgrade but if your tv has led strips that don't light up, the time and effort is well worth the replacement.

    Thank you for the great tutorial. I used the replacement LED strips and the suction cups today to fix my Vizio TV. It is tedious and time consuming but the TV is back to its former glory. A few notes:
    1) There's lots of tape, make sure you remove the tape from the panel edges before trying to lift out the panel.
    2) When undoing the ribbon cables, the small gray bar tilts down towards you, releasing the cables, and lifts back up to lock them in place.
    3) There are definitely clips under the circuit boards so you have to remove them to get to the clips.
    Happy to have my TV back without having to go and buy a new one right now!

    I have never taken apart a TV but felt I knew my way around enough to give it a shot. Took me like 3 or 4 hours (took my time and triple checked parts to not break anything) but I got it done. TV looks great. Best video I could find on how to do it. Thank you guys!

    One thing to add in the video. Make sure you mark exactly where the strips were including the ends. The new strips come with double sided tape and the plastics clips don’t work anymore. If the strips end up in the wrong spot the reflector plastic doesn’t fit right. Also make sure you label the screws. There are around 6 different screws you end up having to reinstall.

      Hey You know those longer white clips, the 1s to keep the screen from moving, What are those called? and could i buy new1s,? I've already installed my leds strips, but those longer clips, i think they might not work anymore, is that correct?

  • @zmuse

    I would like to say thanks for supplying the parts and helping with the instructions.
    Some pointers: Our TV had a lot more tape and annoying stuff securing some different parts on, like the bottom board cover. The diffuser panel also had some tape. I think its way easier to just push 95% of the push clips for the reflector sheet out from the back.
    SCREEN IS VERY FLOPPY So get your positioning of your at least 4 suction cups and 2 people correct. I would not trust it bending more than a few inches.
    It took 3 hours with 2 people working on it. We are generally electronics and computer friendly so it did take longer than expected. Just the little stuff took forever, mostly with that reflector screen pins. I did punch holes in the 3m tape (where the push pins get pushed through) so that took a while. A lot of people ditch them on the LEDS but I didn't want the 3m tape being the only thing holding it with the heat inside the TV.

    Thanks gentlemen. I received my order and managed to bring the TV back to its former glory. (Glory as far as a Vizio will bring me anyway. 😉)
    I had an initial scare after I put it back together and couldn't get it to turn on. (No power and the IR sensor standby lights were not coming on) That IR light was a sign luckily and after opening it back up I could see that the opposite end of the tab had came loose from removing the board to get at the tab located behind it. Once that was settled everything worked like a charm.
    Man that was a job. Vizio certainly did not make repairing this TV and easy job for people with all the tabs and the one behind the board. Yikes. However, worth it in the end as it was a cheap fix and learning experience.
    A few notes for anyone in the future who does this and comes across the comments for further help.
    -Use a sharpy marker to outline your dead LED strips prior to removing them. Once you remove those and put in your new ones, if the locations are off the reflective sheet cut out holes will be hard to readjust and the sticky tape on the back of your new leds makes it hard to remove and adjust them. (I needed to, it was successful, but made for alot more work and risk to the new LED strips.
    - double check all cables as things can get pulled when removing the board to access the push tabs.
    - Be careful when removing the reflective layer above the LED lights. They had alot of sticky tape on both ends so you may rip that sheet a bit if you don't go with the tape. I had a minor tear due to the tape, but it wasn't enough to matter. You can always use a clean tape on the bottom if any small rips as it isn't above any of the LEDs and wouldn't show through. U just want it to remain flat so no tears poking upwards ruining the reflection.
    - In the video they use 4 suction cups, I only had two and was doing the job solo, but it worked with being careful. 2 people would make life easier and generally be safer. :)
    Beyond that, it generally wasn't very difficult, just time consuming due to the TV being made to put together much more easily rather than to take it apart.

    I just successfully replaced the LED backlight strips in my Vizio M-Series. These videos are very, very helpful, but if any of you out there are also fixing an M-Series, just know that there are some significant differences. The bezel on the top and sides is one piece and glued to the TV. The glass is also not held on by the bezel. I didn't realize this until I put everything back together and could see that the glass would literally fall out if I stood the TV up vertically. I had to use double-sided tape and carefully adhere the glass back to the frame. Trying to position a 65" piece of flexible glass perfectly was extremely difficult. I ordered the 2 suction cups and I would highly recommend this to everyone as it makes lifting the glass so much easier. This probably took me about 10 hours of total time, but in the end, for a little over a $100, I have a working TV again.

    • @robknapton156
      @robknapton156 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where did you get the strips for the M70-F3? I have looked, but they seem to be out of stock everywhere. Also, I'm interested in knowing more about the difference (for when i replace mine). You said the bezel is glued to the TV, but the bezel doesn't hold the glass? Did you need heat to remove the bezel? And how was the glass held on originally?

    • @drmegamax
      @drmegamax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robknapton156 I bought all my parts from ShopJimmy.com. My TV is the Vizio M658-G1. The biggest difference for me was that the bezel does not hold the glass in place. I appears that it does, but the glass meets the bezel just perfectly so that it appears that way. The glass was held in place originally with some sort of adhesive. It was black in color and I was able to peel it off pretty easily. It was similar to the sticky stuff you get with junk mail where they attach cards to paper with that sticky stuff, but much stronger. And, yes - I still had to remove the bezel because it does hold the layers of diffusion under the glass in place. It's hard to explain, but the bezel has a groove in it for the layers of diffusion, but not the glass. I think they did it this way for aesthetic reasons - the bezel is a lot thinner than other many other Vizio TV's. Also, removing the bezel is tricky, since it is glued on and is 3 sided. It's not designed to be easily removed, but I was able to start working it off little by little. Once I got it going, it started to let lose. The real trick is putting the damn thing back on. Took a ton of patience, but I eventually got it. Would have been a lot easier if I would have known that I didn't need to have the glass involved until after the bezel was on. But, I didn't know that and after the bezel was in place is when I realized that it isn't holding the glass on at all. I was hoping the old adhesive would have enough stickyness left in it to hold the glass, but it did not. So, I had to remove all of the old adhesive. Then, I used double sided sticky tape, and slowly put little pieces, end to end, around the entire three sides. When it came time to put the glass back on, it was incredibly stressful and difficult. I was holding a 65" piece of glass, trying not to bend it too much, and position it perfectly on the frame of the TV. Somehow, by the grace of God, I got the thing almost perfectly positioned. I mentioned these key changes to ShopJimmy because this definitely changed the difficulty of this process. The other stuff -- removing the old LED strips, etc. -- took time, but not super difficult. It took me more time because my M series has a lot more LED lights to change. If you had a P series, that would be even more local dimming zones, so more LED backlights. Still, the way I looked at it was, I gave up a day to do this, but for a little over a hundred dollars, I have an almost new TV again. I will never buy a Vizio TV again though. Ridiculous that anyone should have a TV go bad just after a year of use. I may also consider an extended warranty on my next TV - something I've never done in the past. But, after this, I would. Good luck - you can do it.

    • @quicsands
      @quicsands ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmegamax How did you get the glass part of the screen off? did you go from the front of the TV and peel around the edges or did you open the back and push it off from there? I want to remove the adhesive on the sides and maybe replace it somehow because they didn't do a very good job at the factory. there is a small gap in the top 2 corners.

    • @drmegamax
      @drmegamax ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quicsands Honestly, I can't remember the details that well anymore. I remember using 2 suction cups to lift the glass off and having to be very careful with that. The TV was definitely on its back and I lifted it upward. The shocker for me was when I had it all put back together, I then realized that the bezel did NOT hold the glass in place. So I had to take the glass back off, and put 2 sided adhesive all around the perimeter - one tiny piece at a time. Then, it was an extremely stressful procedure of lowering the glass back into place. It's basically one try and you have to get it correctly positioned. Not easy to do because the glass bends. I managed to get it very close - almost perfect, thank goodness. FYI, about 18 months after I replaced the backlights, they are starting to fail as well, so this was only a temporary fix. Overall, I'd say it was worth it because I'll get a couple of extra years of use out of my Vizio TV, but I will never buy another Vizio.

    Okay so. Did this last night and now my TV looks brand new. I love it.
    But I have some things to say. Ok so 1. To everyone in the comments saying "oh this was so easy!" NO. NO it was not 😭😂 this has to be one of the most difficult things I've ever done. It took my fiance and I 6 freaking hours to do this and we were up until 2 am. And then 2. This video is a good follow but really doesn't explain anything when it comes to removing ribbin cables, taking out the little white tabs that hold the reflector sheet in place, and then putting those white tabs BACK in. (The tabs, not the tall, skinny things). But all in all, we got it done and I was seriously shocked our TV even turned back on, let alone, look as beautiful as it did the day we bought it. Thank you so much for this!

    Extreme care is required when lifting the LCD panel at this size. In the video you can see even with 4 suction lift points, the edges of the panel 'flex' quite a lot. Mine actually cracked at the mid flex point at the long edge while lifting; damaged panel, game over. Rather than a 4 point suction lift, I would recommend gently lifting the narrow edge of the LCD panel and sliding an equal sized piece of heavy cardboard or thin plywood under the panel then lift the cardboard/plywood panel . Same on re-assembly. Sit in place and slide out the support panel. My problem was 7 failed LEDS (one each on seven strips) on a two year old tv that was occasional use. I thought LEDS ran tens of thousands of hours. How do so many burnout in such a short time?

    When you removed the reflector sheet, you pulled off ~18 more tabs that held it in place (short stubby ones that it pops off of at 4:15 - 4:20). The video doesn't show replacing those, meaning the reflector sheet isn't as secured as it was originally. Does this cause any issues?

  • @jadesystem

    Some advice on this procedure. I've damaged two (2) late model 60" VIZIO screens by replacing the LED strips. I've had to trash them as once the screen is damaged, your project is toast. Nobody in their right mind will sell and ship a replacement screen as its too fragile to ship. Plus the cost of a replacement you can buy a new TV. The hardest part of this is handling the screen. The alignment is critical as-is the flatness. The suction cups are a "must have" at Harborfreight Tools for $5 each. The screen is a PC board in itself with traces and pixels imbedded as a sandwich that produce a picture. Use the upper top as referencing for the screen to butt-up against otherwise you will have a gap with the diffuser light showing as well as a weak point. Pick the TV with this gap and you'll crack the screen. Any over tightness or misalignment on the bezel will crack the screen. Its taken me two full days to resolve this issue which I now have black spots and a horizontal line after installing new replacement strips. The slightest bump, a careless jab, and its game over. Unless you have the time and the patience, I would not recommend this. Its not worth your time on any TV that is 50" or larger. The manufacturing process probably used robotics with pinpoint accuracy for the screen placement into the chassis.

    I performed the LED replacement on my Vizio E70-E3 last night and I'm having some problems I'm hoping you can help me with. Before the replacement, my TV worked fine but just had dark areas on the screen. After the replacement, I heard sound for about 2 seconds after I plugged in the TV and cable box but then it went silent. I also never saw a picture. I can tell the LEDs are on through the vents in the back and because the "black" screen lights up a little bit but there is no image on the screen. The TV menu and SmartCast won't work either. Finally, the power (and LED lights) seems to cycle on and off, even after I try to turn the TV off with the remote or the power button on the back. I have to unplug the TV to make the cycling stop. It will stay off after I plug the TV back in but the cycling starts again when I turn the TV on.
    Do you think this is this a problem with a specific circuit board or all 3 of them involved? Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.

    Beware, the screen is VERY easily damaged when it is laid down. I did this to an e60-e3 model and the first time I changed them I had a slightly dark spot and I thought maybe there was a couple bad led's so I got a new set of led's and put them in. Nope the screen was damaged from laying it down. Now I'm out $100. Should have just bought a new tv.

      Did you use suction cups placed evenly so the screen didn't bend much when moving it around? The flexing of the screen can easily damage it if not lifted properly as well as making sure it's laid down on a soft surface.

    Be very careful doing this. That white reflector sheet was glued down onto the leds on my tv and we had a hell of a time getting it off without ripping it in a bunch of places. We did lots of surgery with scotch tape to repair it, but it ended up not mattering because when we went to put the display panel back on it cracked in the corner from the slightest bend which unfortunately ruined the whole tv. That panel is extremely fragile. It’s nobody’s fault but my own, but still, word of caution if you’re going to attempt this. It’s a lot more delicate than it looks.

  • @lurkerrekrul
    @lurkerrekrul 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question for anyone who can answer: I just found a Vizio E60-C3 in the trash. It powers on and I get a picture, but it's very dark. At the very bottom of the screen, on the right, it looks fairly normal, but the rest is so dark I can barely see it. I'm thinking that it's the LED strips, but how can I be sure? $100 may not seem like much to some people, but I don't want to spend the money, go through all the trouble of replacing them and then find out that it has some other problem.
    I mean, it's worth it if that's all that's wrong and I can have a fully working 60" TV for the cost of the strips and a little effort, but I don't want to end up wasting my money.

    • @jimmyfrancis2722

      Take a flashlight and shine it into the tv. If you can see a picture, then it's just backlights

    • @lurkerrekrul
      @lurkerrekrul 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jimmyfrancis2722 Thanks. I can already see a picture, it's just that most of the screen is quite dark. I watched another video that showed how to take that model of TV apart and apparently, you can turn it on with the screen removed and see which of the backlights light up. I just haven't had the ambition to actually take it apart, mostly because I can't spare the money for a new set of backlights. I don't want to leave it disassembled in pieces (if I leave it apart too long, I run the risk of losing the screws or forgetting how everything goes together) and I don't want to take it apart, test the backlights and then put it all back together, only to have to take it apart again later when I DO have the money.
      I've also seen people mention that the TV sends a power surge through the backlights at startup, which contributes to them burning out much sooner than they should. Apparently it's a fairly common problem with some Vizio models.
      I also watched a video of someone replacing individual LEDs on the backlight strips using a pack of cheap LEDs and a hot-air soldering iron, which is attractive to me financially, but is quite likely beyond my skill level. Not that I even own a hot-air soldering iron/torch...

It turns out that my TV doesn't offer parts for themoel that I have anyway so I'll be replacing a 5 year old TV sometimes soon. Right now, I'll just adjust the color to try to mask the blue tint that shows up everywhere.
