As the son of an auto mechanic, I know of just the thing for that purpose. My dad uses 3M's TR 07481 2" Medium surface conditioning discs in a 1/4" right angle air die grinder to remove stubborn gasket debris and RTV silicone from the transmission oil pan when he's changing filters. I'm sure if it's good enough for that, it'll work just fine on pretty much any surface a gasket has to seal against, unless it's an MLS gasket as used for car head gaskets these days (in that case, stick with the scraper). Here's the discs on Amazon (25 pack): www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-07481-Aluminum-Surface-Conditioning/dp/B0002STR8Q Here's the holder you'll need to chuck it in a drill or die grinder: www.amazon.com/3M-05539-Roloc-Disc-Assembly/dp/B000FW4LC6
That tip with the oil on the gaskets is awesome. Had a compressor like that not to long ago we were replacing and we couldn’t get to seal so we eventually used so gasket sealer. Wish I would’ve know that, could’ve saved a headache. Love the pro tips
Matthew Waxer no I’ve never done that. I’d think that would make a wicked mess and risk getting the nylog into the internals of the compressor . I was always taught to use oil on gaskets
On a compressor like this when you close the king valve on the receiver shouldn’t the compressor pump down. If it doesn’t something would defiantly be wrong?
Another informative short-but-sweet video Chris. I just want to say how helpful your videos have been and I appreciate your fun-loving positive attitude. I'm in the same boat as Art Barnes as I'm switching over to a fantastic commercial refrigeration company after a lengthy career in residential HVAC. What advice could you give mechanics like us? Thanks man, and take care!
Landon Brass thanks man I really appreciate that. . Umm I’d say just work like you always work . I’d say commercial could possibly be more stressful at times and depending on the on call schedule be ready to work late nights or long hours sometimes
Love your videos man 😎👍🏻 love doing stuff like that myself!! Your vids are great no fancy bullshit. Genuine engineer! I follow you on Instagram as well 🤙🏻
Good video. Do you let the unit pump down as part of its normal operation, close the isolation valves and are able to open/work on the system afterwards?
Master with gaskets and new plate because it may be that I send nitrogen for the high and it goes a little for the low. I put the seal together and it does the same thanks I turn off and it does not retain pressure from the wing
Nice instructional vid , Chris , very good 👍 2 questions : _ how do you scrape off the old gaskets without damaging the plate surface ? I usually use a screwdriver or a blade to scrape stuff off but it's a bit sketchy _ how do you pull a vaccum on the compressor since it's isolated , the ports on the rotolock valves aren't reading the inside of the compressor , so I wonder , what other port can you use ? Anyway , seems like an intimidating job at 1st , and I'm guessing that it takes doing it a few times to get confident about it . Have a good weekend, Chris , now it's my turn to have trouble with the ol' back 😵 Cheers !
Sterling Archer hey brotha ! I use a chisel as a scraper. There are many ways , such as a knife , razor blades , I’ve seen guys use wire wheels in drills. I’m old school so I do it by hand haha I feel the chisel used as a scraper doesn’t do any damage . I pull a vacuum from the fitting on the oil pump in the back of the compressor . There is always a port there on semi hermetics so you can take oil pressure so you can use that to pull a vacuum on an isolated compressor And sorry about the back man. It’s sucks ! Cheers bro 🍺
Great job. Any tips on getting the old gaskets off? It takes me forever to get them off.
Keith Mylum there’s a few ways. I use a chisel as a scraper. You can use razor blades , knife etc. I’ve seen wire wheels used in a drill etc

@@44R0Ndin Thanks for the tip, Ill check those out.
44R0Ndin thanks for the comment man . Yes ! Those discs are great 👍
I just switched from residential hvac to refrigeration after 20 years and your videos have been helpful. Thanks!
Art Barnes thanks man I’m glad you liked them bro. Good luck 👍
I don't get to work on this type of compressor , I learned something new today thank you bro.
I really appreciate the time you took to make all your videos, thanks for fueling my drive to continue learning the trade🔧
Mountain Girl thank you. Glad they can help
Just replaced one of these for the first time . Very good info man

George Jarka thanks man glad it could help. I was always taught to put oil on the gaskets
Great and grateful explanation for your effort
good to see a semi once in a while. Did one of these in Cambridge last summer.
Keep up the good work teaching. Need your style for new techs to learn from !
Always succesful for you....thanks for the knowledge👍..i learned from here
Starting as apprentice today for refrigeration. Nervous and excited!
Brian Alvarez 👍. Good luck man
Great video bro
Never seen the inside of one before thanks 👍🏼👍🏼
Damn bro I wish I had you as a lead tech teaching me the ropes ur awesome bro no homo keep up the good work
RoyalFam 12Gemz thanks bro. I appreciate that. Just hoping to help out some people
Thanks for your tips 🙏
Great vid! Have you ever tried using nylog on the gaskets rather than comp oil to lube the gaskets?
Matthew Waxer no I’ve never done that. I’d think that would make a wicked mess and risk getting the nylog into the internals of the compressor . I was always taught to use oil on gaskets
Great video, do you have to check the txv superheat for floodback being the valves were bad. Thanks
Great job 👏👏
Great video
Great video. which system using this Compressor ? I never work on this compressor. Thank you.
Good vid Thanks for posting good info 👍🏻👍🏻🤙

Enjoyed video
Love stuff like this!
I hate when compressor service valves don't hold then you have to pull all the gas out just to change the valve plates! good video
Ace yup that sucks when that happens hahaha. Thanks for watching man

Great video.once u get the gaskets out do u polish the surface ?
Kenneth Lobo I just clean it up and make sure all the old gasket material is removed
Good job.... 👌👌

Adam Woods thanks man I appreciate that . Glad you like them bro 👍🍺
Good video. Do you let the unit pump down as part of its normal operation, close the isolation valves and are able to open/work on the system afterwards?
Nando 530 of I have to do a repair I pump it down manually by closing the service valve at the outlet of the receiver
Master with gaskets and new plate because it may be that I send nitrogen for the high and it goes a little for the low. I put the seal together and it does the same thanks I turn off and it does not retain pressure from the wing
Do you fix refrigerated trailer compressors? I have a 05g compressor and one of the head is fried
No I don’t work on transport stuff
Nice job👍👍👍
Just remember that POE oil is hygroscopic, so you might want to buy a smaller can.
Christian Sommer oh yes , I just have a little bit left in that can and use it for what I did in this video. I wouldn’t put it in the system
Nice job. Great info as usual. So do trim off the excess from the gaskets?
gabriel brown no I juSt leave them as they are
Good job 👍💸💸
Good video bro!
Anthony Reardon hvacr THanks man 👍
Nice instructional vid , Chris , very good 👍
