If Alan Henderson doesn't blowout his knee, this team wins the NCAA Championship. Also, if Pat Graham doesn't break his foot again, this team might have went undefeated. They were that good. They had nine players who could get 20 on any given night. And, Cheaney was money every night. But, injuries. The killer of many great teams in all sports.
What I loved about this team was that in college basketball, some teams will play physical and intimidate you...if you tried to play that way against this team they did not shy away from it and played you just as tough on every play!
I remember crying the previous season when they collapsed against Duke in the Final 4. This season was just devastating. They were clearly the best team in the nation.
This team has 3 of IU'S all time leading scorers and you failed to mention the 3rd one. This 3rd one is also in the top 5 all time assist leaders and in the top 10 all time steals category.
Some injuries can change outcomes and Alan Henderson's knee injury is a case in point. During his 4 years at IU, the team was winning when he was in the game. His absence in the Regional Finals against Kansas very well could have brought a victory to IU. He was that valuable.
The last vintage IU team--25 friggin' years ago, soon to be 26. That was a GREAT team though, better than some that won the National Championship. Ran into Kansas playing & shooting out of their asses in the elite 8, plus we just weren't the same after Henderson hurt his knee.
This takes me back to my childhood 15-20 years ago. The public library in Bloomington had a copy of this video for viewing in the audio visual rooms. I probably watched it a dozen times in there. I missed this team live by a few years as I was to young but saw the recap of the season on this video man times.
Yeah I'm much older than you & I can tell you this was a truly great team that absolutely had NC potential. Unfortunately, there hasn't been a team anywhere near this good at IU since then. If you had told me that would be the case back then, I would have jumped off a bridge, or the quarries in Smithville--headfirst.
This team was better than the 87 team! If not for injuries, especially Henderson's they play Michigan and beat them a 3rd time in then championship game!
As a KU fan, there are 2 things criminal regarding this IU team: 1. That they didn't win the National Championship. They were clearly the best team that year (17-1 in the Big 10 with their only loss in OT to OSU; the last 9 weeks of the season they were either #1 or 2, including the final AP poll at #1) and they had clearly the best player that year in Cheney (Naismith player of the year). If Henderson didn't get hurt, they would have won the title. 2. I've seen tons of lists of the greatest college basketball teams who didn't win a title and this team is never on those lists, yet the Michigan team from that year always is. IU beat that Michigan team twice! This IU team was LOADED!
Tjhose 91-93 IU teams were probably the best 3 year stretch in IU history. KU prevented them from the FF in 91 and 93, and Dook in the final 4 was the true championship game as well. IU was the only team that could stay on the court with Dook in 92.
Hmm.. I must have selective memory. I thought this team was dominate from beginning to end, but they had a lot of close games early and lost to KU and UK.
Well...he wasn't a great offensive player, but he was a good defensive player & rebounder, & did pretty much everything besides scoring well. Knight loved him--obviously since he started on THAT team.
@@turdferguson7504 I'm not an Indiana fan (I just love Bob Knight's coaching style and teams) so I can't say. But it's one of the worst I've seen in general.
@@aaronrider4051 When they brought him back on the floor recently all the wonderful memories of excellence came back. All those IU legends and the guy who made them that way. I miss those times. The younger crowd don’t quite understand and it’s no use trying to explain it. The game is not the same and I still hope for some sort of excellence at IU, but the past was better. More pure and more exciting. Allegiances no long exist between player and school or school and coach. At least I have the memories.

Absolutely. Best IU team since the '76 undefeated team (yes, even better than the '81 and '87 teams... and they both won NCAA championships.)
I used to watch this VHS tape over and over and over ... somehow willing a Championship.
Thank you, Coach Knight

One of the Sweetest Left hand jump shot I've ever seen.
Calbert's jump shot was a thing of pure beauty!
Same with Evans.

Unbelievable team. The Henderson injury should go down as one of the most costly injuries in IU history, right there with Scott Mays broken arm.

Last great IU team. Hopefully Archie will change that.
Chris Rhodes Zeller Oladipo and Yogi were a great team.
I miss Calbert Cheaney ;(```
Why am I watching this I have to be up in 6 hours :/
IU has fallen from a perennial Nation Championship contender to the third best team in Indiana.... we really need a coach.
To this day I've never seen outside of Larry Bird maybe a better looking shot than Cheney had .
I was too young to see Cal play, but my dad used to tell me all kinds of stories about him. He definitely was on another level.

one dislike? Purdue or UK fan probably.
can you imagine if Funderburke stayed at IU, unstoppable is the word

No, dummy. The best 3 yr stretch was ‘74-‘76. The best 5 yr stretch was your mom.
@@milesmccoy2976 No asshole, they didnt make the tourney in 74.

My all time favorite team, if only alan hadnt got hurt....gr8 gr8 memories
If only they couldve figured out Kansas.....and Henderson doesnt get hurt.
46:57 Is that the white dude from Blue Chips? Not Nolte, but the OTHER white dude. Guy on the team with Shaq and Penny.
Yes, his name is Matt Nover. He was not a great player coming out of high school and struggled a lot the first 2 1/2 yrs at IU.

@@pigalow2002lol he scored 28 points over a win against Kentucky. But not a good offensive scorer. Lol
Ted Valentine
The bad Valentine call was the year before, in 1992.
