guys come on this is the Arabic version of gyro, it is actually pork. Doner is made from lamb and has a different texture. I'm Greek and I go back and forth between Greece and Germany where everyone eats Doner. Trust me once you eat a gyro you will not want to eat Doner again, at least for my taste. And no it's not the same. And no, meat on a bun was not a Turkish idea it originated from Greece. Greece and Turkey have their own version of meat on a bun. But don't tell me that pork on a bun is doner because muslims don't eat pork.
history proves that first shawarma comes from arabs but not in the for of today, whole lamb on stick turned on top of fire, this form was invented in ottoman turkey, could be a turk or greek or armenian who did it first who knows...?? earliest recorded version is doner in a bun in istanbul there are records and pictures to prove it unless you have your own proof...
