When you said, 'squint your eyes so you can see', you became the best art instructor ever! Anyone can be a teacher but so very few are capable of allowing us to see what you see. Thank you for your teachings!
When I saw the start of this painting, without even a pencil sketch, I thought this can't turn out well... especially the first light brush strokes, I thought...thats not even head shaped! Then you refine the form and shift things about. Absolutely brilliant. Sadly you can't teach confidence. Which is what you have. You know it's going to work. Us lesser mortals get afraid when we splash dark colours in like you do thinking we've ruined the piece but then the colours mix, wash out and dry lighter and all is not lost. I still think I've trashed my painting when I try to paint as freely as you do, but mostly a rescue operation works out fine. Keep up the excellent work.
You are just a fantastic artist and a teacher. To make a portrait with paint and brush needs a great art within you. That also you are demmonstrating in a live show. I don't have words. God bless you.
I follow the channel has been a while but I think I never expressed before how much those videos thought me. It is my main resource for learning how to paint and if I had never encountered I probably wouldn't be painting watercolors today because I always rated the pencil sketch process and I didn't believe you could "skipet" ... this channel changed evething for me, thank you so much and please make sure this never desapear from internet, it way to valueble!
What an amazing technique and thank you for adding your vocal thought process out loud for us which gives a deeper insight in to portrait watercolor. Wow, you make a difference. Spectacular results!!!
Mr. Chen, do you realize what a treasure you are? There are many souls on this Earth, and each and every one has value - some to make the world better place and some to make the world worse. Yours is certainly to make the world better. I have bought the very best water color paper, very fine paints, very nice brushes and I cannot bring myself to start. I don't know what it is. It's not fear of failure, its not laziness, it's like I'm just....torn. I must be going crazy. I get very inspired by your work and I suppose I will one day try to do something. But I do enjoy, if nothing else, watching you do your incredible paintings. Thank you for making the world a better place.
for me it was a good idea to start at first with swatching. Its important to learn about the behavior of your colours and how they look if you mix them together on your paper. To work with watercolour needs patients and its a good way to slow down and maybe you will have an idea or start with simple exercises like how to paint lines- just to get know the materials:-) Have fun!
Are you painting now? I hope so! I just started again after not painting for a whole year! I am not where I was when I left off but that's ok. The way that you get better is to paint paint paint.
@@sherylF5610 yes, all is practice! It is never only talent., many beginners have no idea what they should paint and how( techniques) to realise their own fantasy, so it is knowledge and practice. Next step was to find a motive by myself. Ideas ( the muse!) comes with practice and if you get better and better by doing one day the veil is coming! Yong Chen helped me a lot and i painted while watching this video and it worked very well! I also stoped painting for a year! I only learned theoretical stuff and watched sometimes tutorials- then i learned to have patient- also this helped me later as i started practice again. Wow!
You are incredible! The best by far at least from my point of view. I am just awed. You not only demonstrate the process but you allow us to see what you see and how you describe certain aspects that can't be viewed in the video e.g. your thoughts, decisions, etc. Thank you so much for being generous. You are so talented and an exceptional skilled artist. So much respect here.
I follow you all the time and this piece just had me mesmerized! You see things in color and shadow that I hope someday with lots of practice, I will begin to see. I am learning so much from watching you paint. Thank you for sharing your talent!
Thank you for sharing this interesting technique. It takes a lot of knowledge and courage to boldly move forward to produce a beautiful likeness like this one. At first, I didn't know what to expect but in the end, I was amazed how good the painting turned out.
Thank you for the lessons, plural. You have renewed my appreciation for watercolor.. Might I suggest a minor touch up on the eyeglasses to include foreshortening on the size of the right lens perspective? .I never realized how much watercolor lends itself to reworking every aspect of color, hue and chroma, not to mention employing patterns emphasizing big shapes and then moving on to capture the smaller details. There is absolutely No need for drawing and outlining, ever. And what a lesson in light and exposition. It adds so much more in capturing the passion and humanity of one's subjects. It's plein air on steroids. Anything is possible. I love how you reassure yourself and your audience your decisions were correct while you are doing what you do. It immediately builds self-confidence.
Un vero capolavoro . Complimenti ! Sei di una bravura eccezionale,se poi si usano i colori ad acquerello.Amo anch'io dipingere ,uso i colori ad olio e sono un autodidatta.Saluti Dalla splendida soleggiata Italia.
Hi Yong Chen, Thank you for another great demonstration of watercolour with no pre drawing! You are a great artist and I believe you can see just how your own paintings have taken a giant leap forward by Not Pre drawing first. I encourage all artists to at least give it a try! At the very least, it will improve your drawing skills with the brush, almost overnight. Other benefits are paintings that look 'Fresher' and brighter. Thank you.
@@soslick30 Hi, Yes, you well notice several benefits after only a few tries. Then continue to work this way for the rest of your life! Not only will your painting and drawing improve, but your enjoyment of your work increases tenfold. You no longer will be painting by numbers or feel restricted by the pencil marks, also you will develop your own style. Every success to you.
When I see your videos, watercolors look like a most easiest medium. When we do it becomes most difficult 😂... Your students are very lucky to have a teacher like you...😇
I am dumbfounded I want this and I try but there is so much information that you process with ease I just don't know the words to pay you a worthy compliment. What I do know, this has to be my goal. Thank you.
I am amazed at how you did this water colour, I subscribed because I think I can learn so much even though I use acrylics I now want to try water colours. Wow!

Grazie per i suoi insegnamenti. Lei è veramente bravo!
Incredible!
It’s surprising to me that new generations of artists are not aware of this important tool.

I appreciate your judicious use of white and the color relationships. Thanks
