My father, Bob Wells (known to Clevelanders as "Hoolihan") has a small role in this film. Every time you see the villain, Richard Crenna, you see him, although he had few lines, he did get a full facial reaction shot when Crenna said my dad would be picking up the check in the restaurant scene. My mother, Barbara Wells, is also in this film as the neighbor who responds "having lunch", and later as a yacht race official. Dad relates that John was the absolutely nicest guy, and working with Crenna and director Carl Reiner was a career highlight for him.
I, too, sorely miss John Candy, and count this film as one of my favorites. He was an outstanding talent the likes of which we might never see again.

This movie always seemed to fall into the afternoon movie slot back in the day and seems to usually be in rotation in the Netflix, Hulu, etc services these days. I don't know, it's one of my more favored "anytime" movies. The idea is simple with some great coloring outside the edges by a great cast. There is just so much relation between this movie and parts of our own vacations that bring the realism. John and Rip played so well off each other. Cheers.

I have some info on that once planned sequel to Summer Rental. It was planned back in the day, and I saw it in a Paramount Pictures presentation for investors that's online. The film was not just a sequel to Summer Rental, but a loose adaptation of the 1950 British film of the same name, but unfortunately, like you said... he passed away in 1994.
But then, years later, Queen Latifah found the script for the abandoned sequel and absolutely loved it and asked for the script to be modified for her, and it would lead to 2006 remake to be made.
The story was basically about a person finding out that they have a terminal illness and that they have a short amount of time on earth, so said person goes to a fancy hotel to spend every single moment till their last.

John Candy made a lot of great before his passing, a lot I actually have and watch from time to time and it's a shame he's no longer with us doing what he does best, making such great movies but sadly there'll never be another like John Candy again.

I love this movie. The scene when he returns to his summerhouse to find it taken over by beach goers is hilarious. I also love the scene when he first asks where all the people walking through his yard are going and the slob points at the public beach sign and just belches really loud hahahaha. Gets me every time.

So that was Kerri Green voice that said “mommy, can I play with Yorku?”… and Yorku was played by Harry Yorku who IMDB credited him as the Pirate Musician

The movie also features a Jimmy Buffett song that's never been put on a Jimmy Buffett album. I also deeply love the movie. It's one of those ones that's just a must watch during the summer, or any time you need a good pick-me-up movie. I think those that didn't get it at first were just not really paying attention, as it does start out more chaotic, but gains focus as it heads closer to the boat race. John Candy's movies tend to all be good for chasing off the blues. Great Outdoors is another favorite, and yeah, both have often played here in the US on stations. Often during summer movie blocks, to tie in with the vacation theme.

Carl Reiner did have a cameo as a guy named Rancho Canejo in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. The photo you showed, however, was of Jim Backus who was Tyler Fitzgerald in this movie and he also played Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island. I'm not being critical, mind you. I love what you do and nobody's perfect. Keep up the good work!
