      As great as the game is, it's pretty easy for a beat 'm up even on hard. I'd say SoR3 on normal is almost as hard as 2 on mania.

      I can beat 2 on Very Hard, played 3 for the first time ever recently and got my world rocked by how difficult it was.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@KCzz15 Well, there is a great way to actually 'get around' the difficulty. The western versions of SoR3's normal difficulty are the 'hard' difficulty in the Japanese version of SoR3 (called Bare Knuckle 3). They also changed the story quite a bit and there's several other changes, mostly regarding censorship (they changed many of the female enemies' clothing and they completely removed the boss called Ash who is also a secret playable character. He's about has hard gay as it gets in a funny way, IMO. Even a gay guy I knew thought he was hilarious).
      So basically, it might be better to play through a translated Bare Knuckle 3. In the western version the stages on easy don't go past stage 5, but that's Japan's normal difficulty and in that version you do get all stages). Both versions of the game also have 2 different endings and a different final stage depending on whether you manage to save the police chief in time or don't.

    Thank you so much for featuring this game! One of my all-time favourites. You need to use the depth of the play field to your advantage. It's a lot easier to dodge attacks by moving up or down than trying to jump out or cancel them with perfect timing... That's also why your hits don't land sometimes, it's because your sprite is not in the correct Z-alignment. The shadow at your feet needs to be on the same horizontal line as the enemy's shadow, or very close to it. That also applies to flying enemies, they have a shadow on the ground that allows you to gauge how high up in the air they actually are, by observing how far up their sprite is from their shadow.

    • @thenonexistinghero
      @thenonexistinghero หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      He also just needs to actually properly learn 'how' to use the moves. Proper enemy management is how you prevent getting overwhelmed. Get them all to 1 side and keep them there as much as possible. And also how to get in properly for damage. Like using Max's slide to stun and then do his combo. Or with Axel to do 3 regular hits and then finish with the dash attack. Or walking little bits for positioning in-between doing hits while the enemy is still in hitstun. And of course the down air jump attacks as well for stunning.
      Now that I think about it SoR2 and 3 have a very large move set for beat 'm ups. Most characters have like 4-5 different throw attacks, back attack, basic combo, dash attack, 2 specials, 2 jump attacks, early combo finsher (by holding attack). Might've missed some actions. 3 also adds more with running, rolling, special bar to use specials without using health.

      @thenonexistinghero exactly, and I would also mention vaulting over enemies (grabbing them and pressing the jump button) is a great way to manage your position and escape attacks coming from behind

    There's quite a lot of depth to it, like holding attack and releasing does a single knockdown and whilst jumping pressing down and attack stuns them for a grab but normal attack knocks them down. When you are surrounded you use your default special which is an all around attack and your direction special is for in front of you. Also using special whilst being grabbed can get you out of it.

    Awesome! One of the best - if not THE best - Beat'em Up game of all times. One of my favorite genres and probably the best rated Mega Drive/Genesis game of all. 😍
    A few quick tips, in case you decide to keep playing it:
    1- You can completely avoid damage when the enemies throw you: Just hold ↑ + Jump the whole time you're in the air, and you'll fall on your feet and not take damage at all 👍;
    2- Hidden Lives: In the very beginning of stage 1, there is a hidden 1up at the bottom-left corner of the screen, immediately as soon as the game starts; There is another hidden life on Stage 2, right after that fight inside the truck, right after the screen transition outside the truck, immediately go top-left; Yet another hidden 1up in Stage 3, in the Alien Nest Cave, at the part where you fight Vehelits (that huge Alien Head on the wall), the 1up is at the bottom-center of the screen;
    3- Jump Attacks: All characters have 3 different types of jump attacks. There's the neutral jump attack (jump without holding any direction then attack), this one has a great vertical hitbox, probably the best for attacking thoes jetpack dudes while they're just hovering; The regular jump attack (pressing Fowrard + Jump then Attack); And there's the descending jump attack (Jump then hold ↓ + Attack), which doesn't knock the enemies back, but instead stun them in place for a moment, allowing you to chain a combo after you land. Just keep in mind that many enemies can counter your jump attacks, like the Donovan (the bald shirtless guy), the ninjas, or the Muay Thai fighers;
    4- Offensive and Defensive Special Moves: Forward + Special is your Offensive form of special attack. This takes away a small portion of your health, and if you hit enemies with it, it'll deal a great damage to them. The Defensive form is just pressing the Special without moving Forward. This only takes your health if it hits someone. The benefits are that it gives you i-frames during the whole animation of the move + it can hit enemies on both sides, meaning it's THE BEST move for when you're surrounded or grabbed by enemies + it gets priority over most of the enemy attacks in the game (if not ALL of the enemy attacks);
    5- Max's signature moves: Max is the only character that can't vault over the enemies when you're grabbing them. Instead if you grab an enemy and jump, Max will jump grabbing the enemy. If you grab them from the front, the most powerfull thing you can do is a neutral attack (not holding any direction, just press the attack). Max will fix the enemy's neck with some nice Chiropractics techniques 😁. If you manage to grab them from behind, then jumping and attacking will make Max work on their backpain once and for all. If you somehow manage to do this and land on top of other enemies, all the by-standing patients will recieve the same treatment. 😁 That's a MASSIVE speedrun strat there; Max's offensive special move (Fowrard + Special) can obliterate the health of those enemies that block your attacks. The Stage 1 boss is one of these enemies that can block. If you land this special move on him while he's blocking, every time your move hits him, it will deal a HUGE amount of damage - another speedrun strat 😉;
    6- Safe approach on enemies: The best possible way to get close to the enemies is by approaching vertically or diagonally. This has a higher chance of avoiding their straight attacks while getting within reach for your attacks or grabs; In a similar way, vertical/diagonal movements ar your best option to avoid strong enemy attacks.
    7- Don't jump-attack the ninjas. They'll just "Ninpo Kage Bushin" and completely avoid you. It's annoying as hell. Your best chance with them might be the simple Blitz move (Double-Forward + Attack).

    Some things:
    When Max and you have initiated the grab, jump first then attack while in the air. Absolute king combo.
    Every other character when you do a grab then hit jump, you switch sides. Not Max.
    You 'initiate' a grab by running into an enemy. The enemy has similar rules. They just have an advantage because they can move extremely fast and choose to ignore you hitting them.
    Pay attention to your fighting 'plane'. If an enemy is higher up on the screen (or lower) than you, you can't hit them. Look at the shadows. You need to have the same elevation as the enemy to land hits. That'll really help you fight those flying pests.

    When I see Ryu play an extraordinarily hard game and he's crushing it while giving so many great tips, I always feel like he's such an amazing gamer and that I will never be as good as him, despite me being 39 and having been a gamer all my life.
    Then I watch him play a game for the first time, raw without him knowing anything about it, like Streets of Rage 2. Suddenly he's making huge, obvious mistakes and can't seem to get a grasp of some of the finer mechanics.
    I actually paused this video and loaded up Streets of Rage 2 after watching Ryu play. I picked Hard and chose 5 lives (he chose 3). I chose the girl (which at the time, he had yet to play).
    I quickly picked up on which attacks were good, I easily found simple attack combinations and ways to exploit the basic game mechanics that made most of the normal enemies easy to beat, and I ended up going through the entire first stage without a single death. And I'm not even a big fan of beat em ups or fighting games in general, never played many of them back in the day.
    Turns out, Ryu isn't some god gamer. He's just dedicated and great at getting good at any game he puts his attention to, as can be seen by his Super Mario Maker videos.
    So I guess the whole point of this comment is really to say that if you ever find yourself watching someone on TH-cam do something that you think you could never do, just remember that you can likely do it too, if you really put the time and effort into it.

    I love watching your content have been for years, If it was live, we all could have helped you really make the best of the versatile fighting in this game. This game can be strategic for a beat'em up. When playing on Hard(Pause). You really can't just button mash. Picked up way too late on chaining your normal attacks with your. -> -> normal attack. You have to learn what the enemies do. You never picked up on that many enemies will anti-air you for jumping. You relying too much on the Weapons blinded you on what situations your moves are for. Like when you figured out there was a standing special and a moving special, i thought you would realize one was offensive and defensive, lol. The Back Attack would have saved you so much time when chaining it with the normal combo as enemies ran up behind you. You did it a bit but let yourself get overwhelmed by spamming and mashing. When surrounded, the standing special is an AoE that creates space for you. When you are grabbed and not thrown instantly, the standing special breaks you free while doing damage to enemies. Frames matter a lot in this game. The hit boxes aren't that bad. It just that on Hard mode the Enemy moves a lot faster and frequent. And they have twice as much health as they do normal. At least you admitted to being glad you didn't figure out the slide spamming till late, or this would have been a very boring video lmao. I'm glad you had a blast playing. Overall I think you did great!!! I hope you give it another go just in free time to really learn it. But hey you're a Cheese God, so that's expected. lmao. I never get tired of this game. It's on almost every console I can put it on Phone.

    The difference between hard, normal etc. are that they hurt you more, they have more health and there are slightly more enemies (mainly small guys). When you play two player (which is great fun) you get even more enemies - for example I am pretty sure that where you had 2 robots in level 7 I have played two player and had like 8 robots maybe more that - but that could have been mania mode.
    I don't think its the s, its more that the level has several horizontal lines and you have to be on the same one to hit them (or not to dodge them). As others have mentioned the shadows help here for example the jet pack bosses.
    Other than that you learn the more you play, each player has different moves, ranges and combos by using a mixture of a grab, a normal combo and rage special from Axel you can easily remove nearly a whole bar of damage but interruption's happen. As much as I love this game (and its one of my top games for sure) I do feel that I have use the "slide" technique or the back hit technique a little too much for my liking but I will for ever love this game, my brother and I played it again and again, so much that sometimes at the final boss it would glitch out and he had to let the cart cool off. Great times. Well done for playing through Hard with only 3 lives - I hope you enjoyed one of my favourites.

    The best time to use the special is when you're surrounded by enemies or if enemies grab ahold of you or if they are starting their combos on you. In the first streets of rage, when you use the special, it calls the cops and kills or takes alot of health on tough enemies with alot of health and using it wont take any life. Also when enemies throw you, press the jump button right when you're about to hit the ground to land on your feet and avoid damage

    As others have said before, the most important thing to learn before you play again, is to learn to hold jump and up when someone throws you to land undamaged, you'll save a lot of energy during the game (plus you'll damage a lot of bad guys while being thrown).

    This is the kind of game where reading the manual or at least going through a gamefaq guide makes it 2x better. You can get out of throw with no damage, throw weapon, do the special with no hp loss, and more.

    Protip: Holding up and the jump button will allow you to land on your feet when thrown in the air, and you take no damage.

    Btw, with Skate, when you grab and enemy and press the C button to flip over, mid-way, if you press B, you'll throw the enemy. And I mean every enemy.

    Thanks for the dedication on completing the game for us! lol you went through a change of clothes and many game over screen but made it to the credits screen! When it comes to difficulty in this game, the higher the difficulty the more enemies and they're much more faster and aggressive. The highest difficulty in this "Mania" which is above "Hardest" difficulty. Hopefully you decide to try the other games in the series.

    When enemies surround you, that's the best time to use your special or if you can't dodge an incoming attack. In the first streets of rage, using your special didn't take energy but called cops and took out Alot of enemies .

    The right way to use the special is to get away when you are surrounded... it drains a little bit of health, but way less than being beaten. It is an anytime "get away card".
    Just use it any time you get hit, your special will break the rest of the enemies' combo.

    • @slickrat
      @slickrat หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      One more thing, don't move further until you kill all current enemies. Otherwise you will just keep spawning more and more enemies and the screen will get crowded.

    1992 was such a great year to be a Genesis fan. The SNES came out a year before and initially seemed like it was going to completely "obsolete" the ole Genny. However, it helped kick Sega development into high gear, they were no longer stringy with cart sizes and we got games like SoR 2, Sonic 2 and Lightening Force, which in many ways outshone anything on the SNES.

    Great game. Definitely like SOR4 though. Gives you more counter play options and gives you a better understanding of how grab priority works with knowing the enemy will always have priority if you see them flashing for a second.

    Max is the best character, by the way. No one even compares to his dps and his regular combo can deal major damage to entire groups if positioned well. Is also the best with a sword and pipe because he hits behind him and his throws are the most powerful ones with some of them dealing up to like 75% of a full health bar. His forward + special is downright broken on enemies that can block, you can chip them to death in no time.

    2 players is way better try again with 2 you have a partner to help out but be careful because you can harm each other. A few tips:
    1. Hold up and C when thrown and you'll land on your feet and not take damage.
    2. There is two specials one while pressing forward, and one while stationary, you can spam the stationary one without taking damage, you only lose damage on that one if you hit a player. The stationary special attack will harm the enemy no mater what 98% of the time and its best to spam that near a turkey then collect a turkey
    3. If playing with 1 player on your last life and last continue press start on the second controller to come in and you can continue as the second player, but you have to do it before you lose your final life

    Fun fact many people never noticed (i myself have never noticed it until I read it somewhere, or someone else told me years ago): Electra's whip is actually a prosthetic weapon implanted directly on her forearm, completely replacing her hand. If you look closely, you'll see she doesn't have a hand there. THAT'S some Cyberpunk style shit back in the 90's. 😅
