I think a big part of it is the M's seem to truly love and have fun with each other. It has to be one the happiest and fun dug outs I've seen in baseball. Team chemistry plays a huge part in winning.
I can't help but think this is why they didn't trade for Drury at the deadline. It seemed like a perfect fit for the team, with a player hitting well in a position of need. However, with Winker, Suarez, and now Castillo coming over, I wonder how good a teammate Drury is and if the other former Reds advised against it. Based on his stats in SD, I think it turned out to be the right move anyway.

It should have been no surprise to see the Ms clinch a playoff spot with a walk-off home run with two out in the 9th…the day after another walk-off in the 11th.
I feel almost certain Seattle will make the playoffs, but I want them in the top Wild Card seed, so we can say that they didn’t just get it through expanded playoffs.
I would love to also see them in the top wild card spot, but I also wouldn't be mad with them having the last wild card spot. I was looking at the schedule and I feel we would have an easier road in the playoffs if we had the last wild card spot. We would first face Cleveland in the wild card round and we have season win at 6 and 1. If we got past them we would face the Yankees which we also have the season win of 4 and 2.
I’ve had the same thought on getting in without need of the expanded playoffs-makes it feel empty and that we only finally made it because the standards were lowered. Also, in terms of “easiest” playoff road, people keep wanting to avoid Houston until later but fail to consider that it’d be easier to beat them in a 5-game divisional series instead of a 7-game championship series. Also, I say quit trying to over analyze it and just bring it on and let’s just punch whoever we meet in the face.
You need a little more than good pitching and timely hitting to win. I’m a mariners fan, but I’m a little apprehensive about their ability to produce runs in a playoff setting. I do love seeing them have some come back wins.
