      Here's the thing. They weren't using starting fluid (ether), they were using carburetor/choke cleaner. You can tell by the "pop pop pop" the spray was making as it came out of the can. Also, next time you go to an automotive parts place, grab a can of starting fluid and read the can. All starting fluids have a top end lubricant added in it.

    Fuel System on Rotax is ... difficult. 5 emergency off field landings with Rotax, 3 were Fuel System related. Most ultralight pilots in the area I'm from went to 12v electric pumps with a small motor cycle battery.

    • @battz99
      @battz99 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A Mikuni pressure operated diaphragm fuel pump operates at around 0.2-0.3 bar, certainly under 0.4 bar pressure. A pump and tubing in good condition will operate reliably and last for years but it has to be inspected and maintained especially now that alcohol has been added to the fuel which affects both the tubing and the seals inside the pump. An electrically operated mechanical fuel pump meant for a car engine operates at a considerably higher pressure that's at the top end, or above, what a Rotax 2-stroke engine is designed to work with and there's a serious danger that if left running permanently in flight it will flood the carburation system and either cause an engine failure or an engine fire from excess fuel exiting the carburettor overflows onto a hot exhaust. Fact. That's why Rotax's use diaphragm operated pumps. My first old AX3 ultralight was originally owned by a BMAA certified inspector and was the first in the UK to be fitted with an auxiliary electric fuel pump that was intended only for priming the system. It was placarded 'not to be used in flight except in case of an emergency' for that reason. Because it was just dead weight I removed it and replaced it with a hand primer bulb.

    • @oneninerniner3427
      @oneninerniner3427 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@battz99 our snowmobiles run mikuni pulse pumps and work reliability for miles and miles on multi carbed 100+ hp machines. The key is nonox fuel. If you run oxygenated (ethanol) (alcohol) cut fuel you are going to have a lot of fuel system problems and maintenance.

    • @battz99
      @battz99 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oneninerniner3427 Accepted. Trouble is over here in Europe we now have no choice. Even 98 octane now has 5% alcohol and the lower grades 10%. Pilots have been saying that for us it's dangerous but we don't count and are being ignored. I had a low quality hand primer bulb in one of my aircraft that had rotted through after only about a year due to alcohol. Fortunately I found out on inspection before flying because it was leaking fuel at an increasing rate onto the cabin floor and could have given out completely in flight dumping the lot into the cabin.

    Glad you got it running! Having said that, it's really not a great idea to use ether on a 2 stroke engine -- the oil in the fuel mix is necessary to lube the top end and rings.

    Try removing the black wire from the spark plug caps, I have had problems with those before. I had bought a 450 honda motorcycle for $65.00 and that's what was wrong with it, the spark wasn't going through the plug cap so could be wore out inside where the plug wire meets the plug cap

    It is a damned good thing that the Pup did not start on either cuz Jimmy would have gaulded the bearings. The Pup just needs new fuel lines, the fuel tank cleaned, a new fuel pump and the carb cleaned and to be run on ethanol free fuel. I would use the same oil for the mix as my vintage sleds.

      All starting fluid sold these days have a top end lubricant added in. Check out a can when you need to go parts shopping. Besides, they weren't using starting fluid anyway. It was carb/choke cleaner. That stuff pops as it comes out of the can, on some brands.

      @@F5Tornado44 You should not have commented because all you did was show others how little you know. With two strokes it is the bottom end that needs the lube so that the bushings or bearings and crank cases seals do not go out.

      @@hartstudebakerkid Tell me Mr. Wizard, do you think lubricant knows where to go once it enters the engine? Perhaps you should take a little of your own advice.

      @@F5Tornado44 Yes because that is a piston port engine just like three of the four snowmobiles I have or even three of my chainsaws that date back to the 1930s. So you keep yapping so the rest can laugh at you.
