He explains the mistake of the Monsters Inc company in the movie, not the plot of the Monsters Inc movie. The theory explains that Waternoose mistook screams as a consistent energy source when it actually wanes with repetition.
I think the reason the monsters don't scare the adults is because children forget about the monsters when they grow up, but if it started happening to adults then the whole human world would know about the monster world.
Also the reaction that Monsters have to a Kid I can only imagine what reaction they would have to an Adult So the thought of Adults preparing of going to War against them is their Equivalents of Demons, Ghosts/Paranormal Entities and Aliens going at War against Humanity
I feel like they don’t scare adults because there’s always the chance of them trying to figure out how the portals work and trying to come to the monster world
Also a much higher chance of them trying to fight back and attack the monsters. While most adults would probably be scared if a monster suddenly came through their door, a lot of people would choose the "fight" side of their "fight or flight" instinct and at the very least throw something at the monster, (and keep in mind that the monsters were so afraid of humans that they treated a simple sock as a major biohazard risk), if not actually attack with weapons depending on who the person is/where in the world they live......
They did show in Monster University when Sully and Mike ran into adults that they got chased down by the police who may have been armed so yeah there definitely a good reason.
“It’s actually a power company that gets it’s power by harvesting children’s screams” When you say the plot of the movie it seems like this should be a horror.

This honestly would not work as the energy cost of playing your music would be drastically higher then the amount gained... It is possible to harvest the energy from sound you or the environment is making... But not create an environment of sound to harvest for energy.
@Mr7Slug Roxor mentioned those too (I think you're talking about the same thing?) and Menoob listed some issues with the practicality of it. Tbh, I know next to nothing about physics. I just wanted to make an AC/DC joke. I'm not even sure if the joke makes sense from a physics perspective. I know the acronyms AC and DC stand for Alternating Current and Direct Current, referencing different types of electricity or something but I don't know a thing about them or what either of them is actually used for.
@Mr7Slug That one's easy, a lightbulb. I didn't even know about the argon but I can figure it out from the rest of the description and context clues. I dunno about microphones. I certainly wasn't aware that they could produce electricity. I thought they just amplified sound, I didn't realise that it would make energy when they did so. I probably would've guessed that they did the opposite and used up energy rather than generating it. Maybe if you study or work with physics, it's obvious but I've never done either so I had no clue. My guess is that the people you're talking about are much like me. They've just never been told so they don't know. There's nothing wrong with ignorance if you're willing to learn, wilful ignorance on the other hand... that's not so good. Hopefully, they're the former.
I think the reason they specifically choose kids to scare is because kids have big imaginations so if they were to tell parents they wouldn’t genuinely believe them. And when they grow up they probably wouldn’t think it was real either.
@@jordanhunter3375 Although since it's an insane asylum, they wouldn't really be able to commit suicide. The asylums would have measures against that. And it's very rare for someone to die via fear, heart attack or otherwise.
@@Comboowo Then, maybe the regularity and frequency of these nightmare visits would push wardens to hire investigators, which would in turn increase the risk of a human finding the Monster World.
Did anyone else wonder how they managed to find out each of the millions and millions of kids' fears? Like, they really have files for all of them so they know who would be the most effective person to scare them? Just...how?!
@@Monsterbaane It makes sense they would put the time an energy into finding out, yes, but HOW is the question? Most of the kids, including Boo, can't communicate with language. Did they just send a different monster through each night until they found out which one scared them the most maybe?
I don't know if I'm misremembering, but I don't think they did know? Each monster had a different scare tactic, and trained on the same 'dummy' kids simulator thing, so they just have to feel out how they could scare each kid best on the spot
Huge hole in the theory: "Kids these days" doesn't refer to the kids they are currently scaring. It means that generally all the kids they are trying to scare aren't as much scared as the previous kids (from the previous generation) were. They've got millions of doors. How could they run out of new kids to scare. Plus, there is an obvious rotation of kids. When they grow up, the monsters don't go and scare them and they scare new kids each years. The SuperCarlinBrothers made a video ("How the Scare Floor Works") that explain a more plausible explanation for what we see in the movie.
If adults found out that monsters are real, they might have been scared the first night, but they'd have 5 friends with shotguns waiting for the monster the next night.
pffft. Why shotguns? Give home alone another watch then ramp up the lethality of the traps, set up cameras, and watch as those pesky monsters try to maneuver your crazy maze.
“Adults should be more scared of monsters because they don’t believe in them but kids do” *monster enters kid’s room* Adult: *screaming* Kid: I fucking knew it
Not going to lie I love Monsters but if I walked into my childs room (which I don't have one but hypothetically) and I saw like a Werewolf in there getting ready to gnaw out the kids neck I'd probably have a heart attack and die
I love how in monsters university they discover how adult screams are way more powerful than kid screams and still only use kid screams. Too much risk of encountering gun owners, probably.
Title: "Film Theory: The BIG Mistake of Monsters Inc" Everyone: Nightmare Foxy is canon to the Monster Inc universe and that it could scare children and ruin there childhood?
I’ve always just assumed that the reason that they didn’t target adults is that it’s easier for the parents to dismiss a child’s encounter as a nightmare and an adult might be packing heat. They need to keep their world a secret and get their employees back to it safely.
Or, if they are anything like that Floridan mother where Randall was exiled, they just need a shovel....wait, what are Floridans doing with a SNOW shovel?
Also they can keep using the same child as they will be gaslighted into not believing and forget . Be re scared on the same level as the first time. whereas adults would remember and can’t be scared the to the same result as the first time
The biggest error in this theory is the "screams have decreased effectiveness". Unless they've only been in business for literally 16-ish years or less, there would of been more and more kids to scare who aren't resistant. It made it seem like they only have same group of kids since it's started.
You are right, but 2 things. 1- by what i observed (i can be wrong) they work in a way that people can get scared more tha once, because they only destroy doors when the kid is 100% immune toscares (that actually makes sense now) so a kid can be scared more than once. 2- because laugh is more effective every time someone does, they start to being harder to track since less people se the monsters . OBS:If something was hard to understand, just ask and i will try to answer.
4:45 so I looked it up and according to what I found, quote-unquote "Both succeeded in finding foam derived from water hyacinth and cassava flour designed as a thermal insulator or indoor heat barrier."
"Kids these days" I felt was more referring to the fact that kids were more exposed to fear and therefore were less likely to be scared of just a monster. It's not that surprising to me, especially since a lot of people I know were exposed to horror movies when they were kids. I think it reaches the same conclusion that their screams were less effective, but I don't think the monsters were the cause, it was just the times changing. I feel if Monsters Inc. was set in the modern day, it would more resemble the time Stan Pines in Gravity Falls tried to scare a duo of kids in the Halloween special.
What is harvested was never Sound ot begin with, which fans of Disney and/or fans of the 'Super Carlin Brothers' would know already. Another badly researched Theory... is this going to become a Trend? Has it already become a Trend?? Cause it seems like a Trend.

“It’s genuine nightmare fuel” Yeah, you’re telling me. I had a dream not too long ago where I was in that chair and almost got my scream sucked by that thing. (Thankfully Mike saved me lol)
Actually, one of the original scripts for the scrapped sequel "Lost In Scaradise" addressed that grown-ups don't really see monsters because they don't believe in them anymore. So they're basically invisible to them but can only manifest in the human eye if you actually believe in them regardless of age.
The *biggest* mistake was whenever monsters entered the room there was a pretty solid chance they'd step on lego. These monsters clearly didn't do enough research.
Madoka Magica is a show about an alien hivemind turning humans into liches and coercing other human-liches into killing the previous human-liches when all their hope finally evaporates after realizing that there is no hope. The alien hivemind does this to avert the Heat Death of the universe. And it's not working. "Wait, I thought this was a magical girl show?" Yep.
Describing what they made as "a speaker in reverse" is a little grandiose when you realise that's what a microphone is. The kids basically made a surprisingly efficient microphone and hooked it up to a battery.
"if you're getting that look from a two year old it means it's already too late (don't ask me how I know that)" as the oldest of twelve I can safely say that I won't need to
@@legogunsinc4016 Not necessarily. A dynamic microphone actually does generate electricity from sound. There is no fundamental difference between a dynamic loudspeaker and a dynamic microphone. They're both a movable diaphragm attached to a coil suspended in a magnetic field from a permanent magnet. Put a varying electric current through the coil and you get sound out. Let sound hit the diaphragm and measure the current in the coil, and you've got a microphone.
One time, I heard that someone had asked why the monsters at monsters inc don’t scare adults, considering that adults would have a more powerful scream, thus creating more energy.

2 (edit! 4) things: 1 - Killer opening sequence! Hits the vibe right on the head ... 2 - Tapping the fear of Parents is unsustainable. Parents talk to parents and it will get around that the monsters actually exist and never do actual harm. Parents will tell kids that the minsters are real but not to worry. Kids wont be scared and neither will adults and the Monsters will run out of power. Moves like the camp scene from Monsters U (attempting to generate so much scream that the door powers from the human side) are very dangerous because that was providing actual evidence that Monsters exist to people who might actually be believed. Being content with children's screams is sustainable because, as they age out, there are always new kids to tap. ... 3 - I dont think Matt is quite right here. Yes, each child gives less dopamine each time they are scared but there are always new children. As child 1 becomes less sensitive and ages out, they are replaced by child 2, who is fresh and sensitive. The problem is the rate at which new children are born. The birth rate in most developed and urbanised countries (ie countries where children will have their own rooms with closets) has dropped well below the 2.1 child/woman required for zero population growth. This means that there are fewer fresh children to scare, so each must be visited more, so they tire out faster. ... 4 - Laughter is the forever solution. Even if the human population hits a maximum or even goes down, Monsters can tap the adult-laughter market by, quite literally, coming out of the closet. Humans are unlikely to let themselves go extinct and will always want a laugh. Monsters can form a symbiotic relationship with humans by becoming, essentially, a caste of comedians. There could be busker-Monsters with portable capture systems. The funniest monsters will be sent to huge venues for enormous gains. Humans will benefit from potentially free concerts. Aside from the cost of maintianing the venues, their laughter is literally all the payment required. This does raise the possibility of war between the races, as humans dont have the best record of being nice to new cultures. But hopefully the monsters will be so freaking funny that we wouldn't want to hurt them. Also, they have teeth and could be genuinely terrifying.

I wouldn’t believe it unless I saw a monster come out of my closet. Because even if I see a video of it, I would think that they edited it or put on a good costume to prank me.

That sound based energy thing is really cool. It would be great if they could do it on a larger scale. Imagine powering your house with literal AC/DC!
Making electricity from sound is old hat. It's called a dynamic microphone.
Now that sounds like my source of energy!
I think the reason they specifically choose kids to scare is because kids have big imaginations so if they were to tell parents they wouldn’t genuinely believe them. And when they grow up they probably wouldn’t think it was real either.
just go to an asylum or mental ward. plenty of vulnerable targets there, and nobody will believe them
@@ombricshalazar3869 yeah, but...what if they get so scared, they died by heart attack or commit suicide to escape the cause of their terror?
Also they would be less likely to fight back than adults
@@jordanhunter3375 Although since it's an insane asylum, they wouldn't really be able to commit suicide. The asylums would have measures against that. And it's very rare for someone to die via fear, heart attack or otherwise.

It's not that surprising to me, especially since a lot of people I know were exposed to horror movies when they were kids. Facts
Same
2 (edit! 4) things:
1 - Killer opening sequence! Hits the vibe right on the head
...
