  • ugh. Damn @awintory. This game is one of the most pure experiences I've ever had in a video game ever. It is deeply poetic. It is profoundly human. And I find it to be inexplicably painful while also beautiful at the same time. The music definitely helps.

Fun Fact about Journey: The soundtrack was nominated in 2013 for a Grammy. (Best score soundtrack for visual media) And while it didn't win, it became the first video game to be nominated for a Grammy award. *That's* how good this soundtrack is!

1:30 when you crest the storm clouds and finally see the absolutely gorgeous mountaintop that you’d been fighting so hard to reach, it’s enough to make a man sob. Even thinking about that magical moment from two years ago makes me tear up. There is no game quite like Journey, and it’s soundtrack turns it from a great game to a masterpiece.
Edit: and 6:15 as you enter the mountain’s peak, alone or with your companion, it’s truly incredible. The song hits different both ways. With, you and your companion found what you were looking for, together. As you walk into that light, you were not alone. But if you lost your companion, it becomes a very sorrowful piece. You made it, but what about the people that stood with you, that helped you reach where you are now? What about the people *you* helped. Did they make it? Or are they stuck down below, searching for a way to the lofty peak you have reached, slowly freezing to death. I’m crying as I write this, and that, in my honest, true opinion, is the mark of a true video game experience

I won't lie that hit me harder than I expected and brought me to tears.
It has been years since I played Journey but I still remember it fondly, the game is so damn simple yet it just pulls you in so easily and makes it truly feel like a, well, journey to whatever goal you may have, the mountaintop in this case.
After the first quarter of the game I was either crying or tearing up through the rest of it, there's just something about it that pierces straight to your heart and makes you feel so much emotion, it's amazing and so many game designers could learn from it just how important immersion and emotion are in making a game worth remembering.

Journey holds a special place in my heart. I have had the chance to speak with Austin a couple of times for some lengthy conversations about his career and music as a way to tell stories.
He has stated that it's both an honor and a shame that this score was the first video game soundtrack to be nominated for an academy award, since so much great music has been overlooked before his. He talks about how awards and recognition should never be your end goal in creative pursuit, but a new ground level to improve upon.
Such a great score, one that he wrote, in part, to be a cello concerto for his friend Tina Guo, the performer, to really bring her skills to the front and center. Both are really great inspirations of mine as a cellist and an indie composer.

It's a fitting name for a track. Apotheosis is the process by which a mortal ascends to godhood and immortality. It's an uplifting process, and in many myths, the journey to and through apotheosis is hard and heavy, with much toil, leaving a weary mortal at the steps of godhood to crawl up it ever so slowly if only they can continue to pull themselves, one halting step at a time, into the land of immortality.
And that is what that final sequence of Journey feels like.

I listened to a few compositions people had made for ancient songs like “Lament for Gilgamesh,” and as soon as I listened to this, I knew. I knew why Journey sounded like me. Like the Deluge and the return. Like the Exodus and the return. Like the Burning of our Temple and the return. Like our diaspora and what always follows. This was composed in the mood of the Levant, a halfway place between the endless power of Egypt and the inevitable endings of Mesopotamia, and a place my bedtime stories never stopped sounding like.

I play Journey everytime I feel sad or lonely. It's one of the few games I can stand to play in its entirety in one go, and one of the few I play with headphones on; usually I play games without the audio and put on a podcast or a video while playing, but for Journey I don't.
The soundtrack is just such a massive part of it that I can't bear not to listen to it as I travel; I've played it around 30 times or more, and still cry everytime me and my travel companion for the session reach the end. The way it ramps up as we glide down the dunes, the way it lingers as we explore the sea like structures near the end, the ascent in the tower, the ascent to the mountain, this music immerses me and drags me in. This music is incredible, and one of the things that can get me out of shutdowns when I'm not well.
This music means so much to me, just like the game, so I thank you for listening to it and reacting to it. I hope you have a good day.

The amount of emotion that the tracks have in combination with the way everything plays out on screen can only be done in games. I watched the video now. You and I pretty much got into it in the same way while listening. But what you said about the track really struck a cord with me. Because to answer the question in your title: yes, it did make me contemplate my life. I first played Journey when it came out and it was a very important part of my life. Not long after, I made a choice to walk down a new path that would change my life and from there I started a decade of self-discovery and growth. This track was the soundtrack of that decade for me and I came back to it very often. Aside from its masterful composition, this track's sentimental value to me is unfathomable. And I am certain that I am not the only one who feels that way--this is one of those rare tracks that truly can just resonate with a person's soul to a degree that not many can.
You may already know this, but for the ten year anniversary of this game, Mr. Wintory did a reorchestration of many of the tracks from the game, including this one. If you have not listened to it, I implore you to do so because he managed to take this wonderful soundtrack and lift it to even higher heights. There's really nothing out there quite like Journey. It's a downright spiritual experience and never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
Will you also react to 'I was born for this' ?

Did you know that Austin Wintory released an album this year with a complete reimagined score of Journey together with the London Symphony Orchestra. It's worth a try and you can listen to it for free on his YT channel.

Journey is... quite literally a journey, in both senses of the word. The music is but a cog in the beauty that is the game. I'll forever regret not being able to actually play it myself, but i've cried enough times just by watching OTHER people play it, so that should give you a measure of what this game can offer.

I haven't touched upon Journey's music yet, but i have experienced Austin Wintory's music in a smaller game, which is Tooth and Tail. Would highly recommend a listen to each of the Faction commander's themes.

Marco, I followed your channel for the Genshin videos just like a lot of people, but I want to say that I hope you continue reacting and analyzing this kind of introspective, soulful game music as well. Two days ago I watched your A Beautiful Song video since Nier Automata's OST is one of my favorite of all time, and I didn't expect how personal your interpretation and feelings on that piece were. It was a pleasant surprise to see that side of you. I think this is another of those songs and analyses. Journey is another game and soundtrack that are special to me and now I feel emotional again with your words and the comment section, remembering my first playthrough.
My companion was only with me for half of the playthrough and I got lost in the snow but I continued, in awe of the part where we soar above the clouds free from attachments. It was pure happiness under the sun after that awful mountain. And when I reach the threshold at the summit, I found them again and I was able to walk until the end together. Everytime I listen to Apotheosis I feel again that joy of flying free and unbound followed by a melancholy for the kindness of a stranger who waited for me. Sigh, I feel like playing it again! Maybe I will tomorrow

Journey was the first game I played during the start of the pandemic. It had been years since I’ve played a video game and needed something to distract myself from all the hard and sudden stay-at-home academic work. I didn’t knew anything about it. I was going myself through a personal journey and…this game made me face my fears and pain, in silence. It also made me face my past and the unnecessary guilt that came with it. That one can face the other side after a hard fight, that one can learn and atone and still make it to the other side and find purpose and peace (embodied in “Atonement” and “Apotheosis”). That, and much more was my lesson from Journey and it’s beautiful soundtrack. It holds such a special place to me that I go back to it every now and then, when I need to be gentle and kind with the struggles of life and its dynamics.

Journey will always be a very special game for me. I didn't play it myself, but I remember that evening when I was alone at home, and one of my favorite youtube channels uploaded a letsplay of this game. I watched it and it was a true journey of soul. Emotional and heartbreaking. It still makes me cry.
I would like to recommend you another soundtrack, which is also very beautiful and seems to me somewhat similar to Journey ost (from my unprofessional point of view OFC :) ) GRIS ost by Berlinist.
And maybe you would be interested in Sky: Children of the Light ost. Sky is created by thatgamecompany too, and it's main plot and idea are the same as Journey's. The difference is that Sky has multiplayer. Waltzing in the Rain is so beautiful. And Flight, which plays at the last part of the game (moment of Apotheosis in Journey).

Hey Marco, if you’re ever lookin’ fer more content to cover I highly recommend the Crypt of The Necrodancer/w shopkeeper. Has some fancy opera parts that you’d never expect in this genre of music…And, as a guilty pleasure request, please cover Guilty Gear Strive. Its an anime fighting game centered around the theme of rock music but there’s some tracks that will have you thinking a good bit. Songs that’d be good to cover would be (character- song) Happy Chaos-DRIFT, Anji- Rock Parade, Zaito - Let Me Carve Your Way, or I-No= Requiem.
