Did you find out who the owners were and what happened to them? I loved seeing this beautiful old house, but I want to know the stories of the ppl in the 1910 photos. The history of the house and the lives of the people is what intrigues me the most.

Gavin Giwer I spotted his name on the video - I had to know so I Googled him! He was an assistant headmaster and later the head of the history department at a local school from 1964-2002 when he retired, and then apparently spent his retirement on golf and rugby. He died at his home in May 2019

I just wanted to say that as you explore these places you give them such dignity You handle everything with such a loving touch. You are touching history and respecting it also. I've watched hundreds of these over the past few years. This one is the best. Amazing!! Takes me back to the early 70's when I had the amazing good fortune to stay in a few homes like that. One owner casually mentioned that the room we were break fasting in was the oldest part of the house dating to 1600's.My poor head just reels as I try to comprehend my surroundings. England is just seething with history!! Just returned from a visit last year. Had a pint at "The Ten Bells" in London before heading to Eastbourne to stay in one of the oldest taverns and hotels next to a church that was established in the 1100's. This was a departure point for the Continent for centuries. I could barely sleep wondering how many people of historical fame and royalty had slept in this very room. Onto Rome to stay in one of Europe's oldest and most storied hotels. Which guest had stayed in my room?! Amundsen, Karen Blixen, maybe Ben Franklin. Then back to boring Canada. Love you England and I'll be back as much as I can. Looking forward to all and more of your channel. Great job.

It is amazing how we can look through these videos and see how much energy there was once in this home. I am 73 years old now and I have been in my house for 48 years. I understand how house keeping gets hard as we age. It is so easy to let things pile up just because we do not have the energy to keep up with our chores and errands. I can feel all the love that once was in this beautiful home. Now this home is sad, it shows. This house misses the people that once lived and loved in it. Thank you so much for sharing your excitement.

Great video but it looks like it was life well lived. A bit of hoarding going on and it reminds me we all have TOO MUCH STUFF!!! Remember the FIght Club? The star says at the beginning something like "first we own the stuff and then the stuff owns us" Thhis is a good example although I always wonder why the hell the family doesn't come in and depose of the things, sell them give them to family members etc. Remember your memories are not invested in the "stuff" they are in your heart forever.

Actually they put lights near windows when they started wiring houses for electricity because all the things they needed light for would naturally be situated near a window. The sewing table & mending basket & the chair that the person who did the mending sat in & the writing desk & the area that people sat in to read would all be near the window, so when they installed lights they would naturally be put near the window to light them in the evening. Also when you put up wallpaper it is put up in such a way that the seams on the wallpaper do not cast a shadow, (you should start by the window) so that they show less, so it would help your decorations look the best if you had your electric light come from a similar direction to your daylight.

    • @kathrynJMwest
      @kathrynJMwest 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

An old electrician told me that they used to put them near the windows because it made it harder for people to see into your house at night when your lights were on. Then net curtains came in and made the need redundant.

This place is a veritable treasure trove of antiquity! I would restore and upgrade this house and all it's beautiful furnishings and live there. The family pics would be displayed as a testament to the homes past. I would restore the Carriage House and the Atrium; incidentally, the tile work on it's floor is praiseworthy, and rescape the garden and put the Coy Pond or garden fountain back in place and make this the loveliest show house. Great video! Thanks for being respectful of the house and it's belongings.

Great! exploring Dave takes me back to my youth when I was living in an old back-to-back house in Aston near Birmingham. I used to love looking round the old empty houses in our street back in the late 1950s early 1960s keep up the great mooching love to watch them.

I wished I had the money to buy and fix this up and bring it back to life. It's such a beauty. The first thing I would do right after I get started on the grounds and have the garden done I'd to give the 3 urns of ashes the proper burial they deserves. Thanks for sharing❣❣❣❣

Thrown by the person he was with for a "spoopy" youtube scene. Totally not cool of him to do. You can also see at one point he's walking around with that toy cap gun he found. What are the chances he took it? Breaking the golden rules of Urbex. Leave only footprints, take only pictures. This is how the rest get a bad name.

Ah I wish I could have explored this house with you! I'd still be there, reading the papers and sorting through everything to research the story of the place and the people. There were so many treasures there - the antique furniture, even some of the coats looked like they were from the 1940's. I imagined maids once keeping it spotless and fancy parties being held there back in the day... Wow, this was an amazing explore. I'd happily live there and fix it up and look after it!

I have watched several of these in the past but this one makes me take a moment of pause, particularly with the urns of ashes sitting together in the sunlight of the window over looking the garden. So many books and photos and peoples memories just abandon. No one to carry on their memories. I have talked to people before who owned family homes like this and they would rather let the building fall down around them than to sell the home to someone who can restore it and reuse it, sad really.
I was not there like you but I still had a strong sense, with the two people on the table, that you should have given them a GOOD AFTERNOON and PERHAPS WE SHALL SEE YOU AGAIN sort of a good by as you left.
Such a home should have been saved and still could be. DO YOU EVER do a title search on such properties and find out who owns them if anyone. In the USA it is sometimes possible to pay BACK TAXES on such properties and then become the new owner.

I too had a 'feeling' like you William,, i wanted to cry,, seen a few of these abandoned homes videos and this one, like you say, made me stop and just feel so sad. The ashes placed with purpose at the window overlooking the garden they loved so much. I see comment above that this house is now being looked after, i am so relieved to read those words,, this house had love.

Buying a property for back taxes can be very problematic... the old owners can come back and reclaim the property at any time. You are not the owner by doing this, it is not a clear title.

I remember taking a bath in my grandmother’s old claw foot bathtub! It was wonderful! You could lay back and fill the tub with warm water and bubbles! Nothing like it today!
It always makes me sad to see old family photos left abandoned. A complete disregard for family history. I would love to be able to have photos of my family from generations past. That one photo looked like a WWII military officer. Maybe the guy was a doctor . All the books indicate that he was well educated. During the war everyone had vegetable gardens.
The house was obviously a very nice home when it was newer. So sad to see all those wonderful treasures left abandoned.
