Just listening to him talk through the lyrics without even singing brought tears to my eyes, which demonstrates exactly why he's THE best Javert, period.

I had the pleasure of working and learning from Philip in 1992 in Les Miserables when I first started in theater. I was certainly raw, but help was there from old friends like Philip, Ken, and David. Philip is a wonderful guy, and gives so much sense to each word. Big hug my old friend Jeff Leyton.

Jeff Leyton How wonderful to see your comment. Every time I come to watch ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ sung by the 17 Valjeans from around the world, I skip back to replay your part. The power and conviction, and timbre, of your voice gets me every time. My favourite of them all. Your legacy in Les Mis surely stands alongside Philip’s.

Holy barricades, Batman… I literally wore down a CD and 2 VHS tapes going back and listening to your part in the International Valjean chorus. The key change is just exquisite. I also use the clip with my voice students as an example of… well, pretty much everything to do right. I’d have killed to be a fly on the wall in the Green Room during this performance- I’m sure the stories were incredible. It’s an honor to comment, sir! 😆😊

Hats off to the interviewer (and apologies if he's someone I should know, I'm just not familiar with him). He's an active listener, asks open ended questions and follows up when appropriate to let the subject _speak_ and share all of this gold. 29:00 is a great example, he caught that there was more to Mr. Quast's thought and just _asked the right question._ An oft neglected skill, unfortunately, for many interviewers.

I was fortunate enough to participate in a six-week course with Philip in Sydney in late 2016. He was incredible!! I learned so much in such a short time and he was even kind enough to watch a rough cut of my first feature film and provide some great feedback. I never would have thought sitting in front of Play School and Les Mis as a 5-year-old that I would have such a tremendous opportunity twenty years later. He is a gem 👍👌😃

I came to this interview by a very roundabout route, starting with an item on a BBC radio arts program which announced that the BBC is going to broadcast a non-singing version of Les Mis this year. So I looked it up on Google and in that article I found a link to the 10th anniversary concert performance with Philip Quast (who I'd never heard of till tonight) and then discovered this interview with him. As a singer myself it's fascinating to see how he's thought out and developed the character of Javert and made him a complex man rather than just a vehicle for a voice. Thank you for posting this up.

Have watched this numerous times and still marvel at it. Quast is A thinking man who understands the need to ask WHY things are how they are and applies it to understanding why he does everything he does. So analytical and insightful, yet so profoundly soulful. A good mind as well as excellence in expressive talents. He is very impressive and a great communicator. This is masterful and the interview is well conducted. Bravo!

These are two totally different types of singers......Quast is classically trained, Crowe has been singing for years in rock bands! Give Russell a break on this one, will ya?! He was not the worst part nor the best part of the movie. I thought Anne Hathaway's singing was worse (put tears in her eyes, cut her hair terribly, and tell her to try to sing).
Crowe was hired for his acting ability, Quast for his singing. And Jackman can never come within an ocean of even slightly near Colm Wilkinson
