This is such an important issue. My husband was diagnosed as early cognitive decline about 10 years ago. I JUST realized that his ASDHD has been progressivly worsening. I have been seeing posts about how some people have both and how the ADHD can get worse as seniors age and often goes hand in hand with cognitive decline..I am following all of these blogs.

Thank you this was very very helpful, I am convinced I have ADHD traits and that my 92 year old dad does too. Over the past year though still very fit for his age he has become crippled with a lack of motivation to do anything, Citalopram has not lifted his mood, so his GP, suspecting Parkinson’s (no physical signs) or dementia (no memory problems) is sending him to a neurologist.
I’m hoping the neurologist will consider ADHD as perhaps then he can prescribe the right medication to give my dad a new lease of life and maybe his lifelong problems of loosing things, not being able to keep up with conversations and ‘having his head in the clouds’ will improve!
The problem is convincing someone who hasn’t known him as a younger person that he has always been vague. I so hope ADHD will become more understood in the future. So thank you for recognising this condition in the elderly.

Please add Spanish captions (CC) to this video. My family doesn’t believe in ADHD, but I’ve suspected for some time that my mom has been struggling with it, and now it seems to be progressing into dementia. She is 65 years old, and I’m 33. I was diagnosed with severe ADHD two years ago. After spending two years educating myself on the topic, my life started to make sense. As I learned more about ADHD, I began to notice that my mom was exhibiting extreme symptoms, especially after she went through menopause.
I live in Los Angeles, in the US, while my mom lives in a very small town in Mexico. It has been incredibly difficult to find information, videos, or resources in Spanish to share with her. They’re almost nonexistent. After a year of pleading, I finally convinced my mom to see a neurologist and two psychiatrists. However, they all told her and my sister that women don’t get ADHD or that it disappears with age. I feel desperate because I can’t find an expert in Mexico, nor can I find information in Spanish. To make things even more complicated, my siblings don’t believe in ADHD, even though my middle brother has been a textbook example of someone with ADHD since childhood.
My mom is visiting me this month, and I’m trying to find help for her here in California, but I still haven’t found the right place yet.

@Sakmig thank you for writing your family situation. Your personal experience has made you good at recognising this problem. I hope you can go through this video with your mum and point out the main points. I dont know how to add captions in youtube. If there is an easy way of doing this then will look into this. Any advice on how to do this? Kind regatds elena

Apologies for late reply. You are similar to many people I see in my practice with mis-diagnosed as having cognitive decline. As we age with conditions like ADHD it is so important to look after all elements of our life. I wonder if you have seen my New carers masterclass which is designed for non-healthcare persons, to help prevent illnesses in later life. You will find this useful. Kind regards Dr elena Mucci
