There is a song by Hannes Wader, a German musician. In his version a simple minstrel comes to the town of Hamelin and offers his help. He lures the rats into the water where they drown, but the king then says he must have had the devil aiding him and that is where he should claim his reward. He waits all night to be rewarded, and eventually the councillors beat him up to get rid of him. So he leaves the town, but he comes back on a Sunday when everyone is at church - except for the children. And he hopes for the children to be more honest than their parents were. He dresses in colorful clothes and sings about what happened to him; the children are outraged by his account and decide to help him. They establish a court, and eventually bring their parents before the high court. many parents are ashamed and decide to banish the entire children's generation. They drive them out of the city, then write in the town chronicle that the pier murdered them. Wader's moral is that today injustice is still tolerated as a "force of nature" and that he will always try and make children fight this. He says that people fighting for justice in the world today may well be the sons and daughters of Hamelin's righteous children.
I quite like this version because it puts a lot of power in these children's hands. :)

Hi Jen, let me start with saying that I love your series about the origins of fairytales. As someone who was actually born in Hameln (which is what the city is called at present and in German), it was great to learn about because I had no idea about all this stuff so in depth!

There once was a three part documentary about the origins of fairy tales on German television and this one was one of them. They argued that the Piper was something like an ancient 'head hunter' who convinced the children to leave their hometown and pick up work in the East of Germany close to Berlin and now Poland, hence the frequency of names from Hameln children in that area, also, close to my hometown (I'm from that part of Germany) there is a village called Hamelspring (Hamel jump) and in the documentary it was said that this name comes from this event. The children were brought from Hameln to this part. I unfortunately can't remember what kind of work they did there.
Also, can't wait for the red shoes one! It's my second favorite fairy tale!

    • @morningafternoonheadshot6741
      @morningafternoonheadshot6741 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you’re interested in the red shoe origins, which very well may be related to the pied piper story as well, look up the red shoe club. The pope, some celebs (Bill Mayer is one I can think of offhand), politicians and other various elites wear them to denote their involvement in SRA and murder, predominantly involving gentile children. It is claimed by some that the shoes are made of human skin.
There has been an effort to cover up for the claims of (what happened to Simon of Trent, trying not to get comment scrubbed) was the reason for the repeated expulsion of Jews 109 times from many countries over the millennia. It’s also the origin of vampire myths, and that eventually they pretended to convert to other religions and joined (infiltrated) many orgs over time to gain power, including in the Vatican itself, as well as academia, and have scrubbed these things from history. If you notice, any bad thing they are attached to they are referred to by other names, such as Bolshevik, Communist, etc. Reportedly, they’d only tell their kids of their actual religion at 12 so a young kid wouldn’t let it slip.
If you look up a YT video or book BY Robert Sepher, “1666: Redemption Through Sin,” it talks about the Sabbatean Frankish Sect that took over a large portion of Judaism in its time, a significant # of Jews recognized Sabbatai Zevi As their messiah. His was the idea, which I don’t think started there but was popularized mainstream, was that they would bring about God to earth or Christ’s return by committing as much sin as possible. They do consider both good and evil the right and left hand of God, and actually, truthfully, theirs is more of a luciferiam doctrine, so they consider themselves right to do evil by the “left hand of God.” He also discusses the dancing rituals that some sects used to commune w God, and included accounts of Rasputin doing such things in Russia.
It’s hard to question their history the same way as we do everyone else’s bc they have aggressively propagandized and have a stable of orgs calling you Anit sem even if you accidentally veer too close to a subject (Holocaust is illegal to question in Europe. You might say they are the forebears of accuse your enemy of things you are doing (Rules for Radicals.. Pro tocols of The Eld era of Zi_on).
I find this credible despite wishing it weren’t. I don’t think people hated them bc they actually believed their claims to be the chosen ones, there’s a depth to that one too. It’s a very deep dive if you do explore. It would be rather that they were welcomed by the villages and they began lending w usury and within a few gens the people who’s ancestors have always owned a farm were now working AT the farm. Basically they became predetory lenders, playing on vices, to make $ off the backs of people and through no actual work, in a parasitical effect, as well as the above and when people awaken to it the expulsion occurs. They did this all over the place, around and round mostly Europe, welcomed back a few gens later, and the repeat happened again, using our altruism as naïveté to their advantage. It was around this time they were exiled from England and Germany. In 1298 they were expelled in a particularly pointed and aggressive way, from all 146 towns they resided in. Perhaps they were found out? The mystery revealed? Idk, but these things all lead to the same group it seems. I just looked up the date while watching this video, I did not know going in. Food for thought

      @AluraHjaldisdottir 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@ W. Li. 8652 The 'head hunter' theory is the most logical one and has the most clues. Of course the people were sad that their young relatives left the town and the magistrate was angry that their best workers left. This explains the writing in the (lost) church window.
Obviously the mayor's stinginess and stubbornness towards the Pied Piper matches the behaviour that the rich elites of medieval towns often showed towards the poorer town dwellers. They often passed laws that restricted the opportunities of these people out of fear of losing power, influence or even the slightest bit of wealth. No wonder that subscription agents were successful.

Ty. Sampford Brett in Somerset where I live has a similar tale with a piper who played music at a wedding feast and when the guests refused to stop due to it being the sabbath. They literally danced until they turned into stone.

This is why I love the tale of the pied piper. It's always been my favourite fairy tale because it's shrouded in such mystery.

the fact you can't play music on that street is very eerie but respectful. Gotta be honest didn't expect this one to have any basis in history. But sadly i can easily imagine a very good musician luring a bunch of children away, who among us as a kid didn't want to go and join a bunch of other kids doing something that looked fun?

i love this series, it's so interesting and cool learning the origins of all these stories we've known since we were kids. is bluebeard on your list ? bluebeard is what let me find you in the first place because i got really invested in how women are seen in fairytales, like they're supposed to be very pure and they're unfairly punished or set up to fail a lot, especially in bluebeard, and i was looking for videos examining fairytales and i found you ! i'm very glad i did, your videos are wonderful.

Thank you so much. I'm probably one of the people that requested the pied Piper. This is way much more info than I found. I read the version where he takes the children to a play land sort of place. I only realized how improbable that was after I grew up. I kept being reminded of the scene where the clams march happily out of the sea only to be eaten in Alice in Wonderland's Disney movie. it creeped me out so much I never touched the book or movie again.

    Hi Jen loved your video
Just wanted to say when I was ahem! much younger I had a collection of fairy tales Can't remember the name but I was sure it was either Hans Christian Anderson tales or maybe Hamlyn almost sure it wasn't Grimms anyway it had lots of different fairy tales and one of them was the 'Pied Piper' which for some reason I used to love A lot of growing up later parents died sold house moved away had own kids, older son took some books away at some point but swears he didn't take it now and I can't find it anywhere in my house
Funny thing is I can still remember the cover which was very pale pastel colour with lots of bright fairy tale design on the front and definitely had really lovely illustrations inside of the piper leading the rats and the children away through the village it's really vivid in my mind
Anyway love all your videos and much love to you both for your future happiness together

I remember CBS Storybreak showed "What Happened in Hamelin" once, but I can't find it anywhere now. I ended up buying and reading the book. In it, the piper didn't get paid for killing the rats, so he drugged the children with ergot, causing hallucinations and other frightening symptoms. The piper played music so the children could dance the sickness out of their system, and that's how he led them away, possibly for the Children's Crusades.

There is a German children's fairytale collection. It's called 'Struwwlpeter' and it is absolutely horrible!!
Each story is about something that kids aren't supposed to do, like for example sucking their thumb. And at the end of every story a kid dies because it did said bad thing. I don't know if parents still read the book to their kids but I knew it when I was little.
I think there is an English translation, in case you're interested 😜

Amazing that this entire monologue did not even mention Robert Browning's Victorian poem which is the versionof the story from which hundreds and thousands of children (especially English speaking ones), gain their knowledge of the Pied Piper of Hamelin legend. And from living in Hameln (Hamelin) for a few years, I have to say that the idea of the 'king's' intervention is unheard of. As far as the Stadt is concerned it is most definitely the town council which swindled the Pied Piper out of his payment, leading to the exodus of the children. And I wouldn't mind betting that whatever event this tale was based on, money will have been at the foot of it all!

Interesting that you draw comparison with Peter Pan, since in Once Upon a Time (TV series) they're folded into one character. (Well sort of, Rumpelstiltskin is also connected, its a weird show.)

Has there been any scope that the parents were somehow the issue and the PP lured the children away to save them from certain patents decisions that could damage the kids?
An interesting angle I came upon.

Have you got a link for the original story, supposedly without the rats?
I collect books on mythology and ancient accounts. There is nothing unusual about a portal in the mountain being opened by a wizard, using sound.
I don't think they would call him rat catcher, if that wasn't in the original account. You will always find that while investigating legends, local knowledge is absolutely crucial.
This also applies to the mysteries of the Giza pyramids, Tetihuacan or Tiwanaku. Read all the material first, then ask for local knowledge.
Ask the local people about Amaru Muru. They will tell you exactly what it is, and what it does.

It’s recorded in many places, including Eliza Gutch, "The Pied Piper of Hamelin," Folklore, vol. 3, no. 2 (June 1892) and her source was
Hiob Fincelius, Wunderzeichen (Nürnberg: Johann vom Berg und Ulrich Neuber, 1556).

      @@jenvcampbell I had a look at this page: en.wikisource.org/wiki/Folk-Lore/Volume_3/The_Pied_Piper_of_Hamelin
There is no alternative explanation for Pipers actions. Since the deal maker was the town mayor, the part about his agreement with the Piper was omitted, or not known to the general public in the beginning. Every politician on this planet demands to be seen as a saint, when the opposite is true. Towns people would cause great unrest, and execute the greedy mayor if they found out about it. After he passed on, and some of his descendants, the truth was allowed to be spoken. There's no point of taking revenge on his grandchildren.
That's been and gone, unlike today's Pied Piper, Donald Trump. I was prompted to look into the legend after I started comparing the two. He has gained unquestioning trust by his people, who cannot find any fault with him whatsoever. They are enchanted by his speeches, and blind to all the wrongdoings he is responsible for. This will lead to many millions of voluntary vaccinations, who won't even ask what's in it. I also started looking into the meaning of the word "Maga" or Magha. Month dedicated to the Ram or a Zoroastrian reference?! Even satanists, into whose affairs I looked very closely over the decades, depict their master as a Ram. Another fact is his constant showing of the 666 sign with his fingers (index and thumb looped)...
I did read some material about European legend origins, and I examined the book about European witchcraft, deals with the devil etc.. That was a while ago, but I did find it very interesting. The book is my native Slavic language and it is at my parent's house. I can have a look at it and find out if it was printed in English, if you like.

The first written account is a hundred years after the event. This leads me to believe that the timing of what really happened is not completely accurate.
The number of children does not appear to be that many, for a main town.
All of this leads me to believe that a number of things happened, over a longer time scale, as some of the possibilities were from 1212, and others later than 1284.
It sounds very likely that there were a number of different things that could have happened, children dancing, until they die, families sending their children away from the town, to somewhere safe. Whole families, including the children, moving somewhere else, to find work. Along with the plague, there were things similar to the Black Death about the time that this was supposed to happen.
The other possibility was that the children were taken for slavery, as well as the Crusade. All of these could have happened over a number of years, but the timeline was compressed to a day, when they were able to write the story.

You can actually get animals to follow you by playing music. People do it was raccoons, cows, birds etc. I'm sure you can do it with rats too. The children part, well...just look how they act when an ice cream truck comes.
