    The other mistake you forgot to mention is the Join Capp
    A lot of people make the mistake of joining the infanry first, losing its turn
    What you should do is capp first, then you join the other infantry
    Its a very small thing, but doing to former definetly will make you lose some cities that you would like to have

    • @Posby95
      @Posby95 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Which is why I said that it should be called Capjoin.

    • @OscarCunningham
      @OscarCunningham ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The other mistake is join capping when it's better to just restart the cap. For example if you've capped with a 4HP infantry then the city still has 16 points. If you join cap using a full HP infantry then the city will still be on 12 points. Instead you should bring your 4HP infantry off the city, and start the cap again with the fresh infantry.

    • @SteelsCrow
      @SteelsCrow ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say that is just a symptom of not understanding Join in general. I remember not understanding the point of it and why I would ever want to do it. Having the joinee do something first is important for most uses of Join. After realizing that, doing anything different is just a misclick. Any little thing can make a difference.
      For capjoin specifically, its best use is capturing hotly contested properties when you can't prevent the infantry from taking damage turn after turn. Start with full health, then keep joining to sustain the capture chipping away at it until you eventually get it.

    I think it’s important to point out that these tips are with a human opponent in mind.
    In the campaign they are useful too, but not all of them in every mission.
    For example, I found Infantry spam on the Mission where Sonja has to take down Adders fortress to be mostly useless once the first initial wave of Adders troops was destroyed and instead I opted for Rockets spam to shoot down the Mini Cannons.

    • @Mangs1337
      @Mangs1337  ปีที่แล้ว +82

      That is true. The campaign does require you to play a little more differently.

    • @clownplayer7265
      @clownplayer7265 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I actually used infantry spam with great effect against the AI actually.
      Now admittedly it mostly works in maps filled with properties and fairly small, but those adorable meat shields are pretty useful.
      Plus, it can also work because the AI has absolutely no sense of convenience, they often built a recon even if you don't play in fog of war and is not an early stage of the game and a tank at the moment would be more convenient. Or building a rocket while you have one of your units pretty much camping the base.
      Keep on mind, I'm still talking about the AI, obviously a human player with some experience or game sense would actually build something in response to your tactics (or yield when it's clear they can't win).

      @@Mangs1337 any chance you could make a guide with general tips for beating the AI in Campaign/War Room? That would be appropriate given how many new players we're getting.
      I know some, like baiting its hatred for APC's and using Neotanks to scare it away, but I'm sure there are plenty of ways to manipulate it that I'm not aware of. I'm sure you could use a lot of the footage from your campaign streams to make it.

    • @SuperGrunt281
      @SuperGrunt281 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe the channel is no more since but there was a video about Duo Falls, the player rushed for a Neotank early which allowed him to steamroll the enemy forces in the early game to secure most of the middle, the AI never had an appropriate response before the player reinforced his position.
      The AI doesn't use it's troops effectively (in more than one sense) , you can still get away with it in Dual Strike, especially with a Megatank since it's a magnet for the AI at times.

      I think the reason that Kanbei bothers me so much is that Japanese is a particularly rigid language, wherein the order of pen strokes when writing Hiragana or Katakana matters and syllabic structures really only have one rigid pronunciation. カンベエ Breaks down into Ka N Be I. The english localization team back then clearly wanted something that wasn't a giant mouthful the way Kikuchiyo is and that played nicer with the character limitations of english charactger limits, and so went with a reference to one of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's top military advisors.

    Just a note: A lot of those rules don't apply to certain missions of the campaign. Sometimes, you don't want to produce infantry at all and in fact, want to base skip so you can save up to build a missile to zone out a Fighter. By zoning out the fighter, you can keep your only battle copter safe for one extra turn so that you can successfully cap the only far out factory the enemy can get to and strip the enemy from producing units. Regarding indirects, if you're spamming infantry, you probably can spam indirects because your infantry can shield your indirects. Just make sure you have something to shield the indirects, and watch the indirect become the key to your wall.

If you are lacking units on the field it may be better to focus on deploying more units to keep up the pressure, on the other hand if you are in need of some extra Firepower within a turn or 2 having a unit like the Medium Tank on the field may help fix that.

      At least in the original game (IDK about the remake) the AI will usually prioritize APCs/T-Copters/Landers over any other unit if on equal terrain. Subs will also surface every other turn, so if you retreat with a battleship, the sub will surface while giving chase despite being in range. They will also always use their CO power the first turn after they get it (only Eagle will use it the same turn if he gets it during his turn). Very useful for knowing when to pull back your units when fighting an opponent like Grit.

    Probably goes without saying, but for near all of these don't take them as hard rules, more a rule of thumb. For instance, yes, you could be building something on every base every turn, but if that leaves your economy in shambles and some of those bases are so far back that the unit won't see combat till the end of the game perhaps leave that one alone for a moment and see if you can build something that will make an impact on the situation closer to the front line. If the enemy has you holed up in a choke point then at a certain point throwing more tanks at it won't do anything more than sustain, consider saving for some indirect that can open up the choke point, or for some b-copters or bombers to go around the choke point if the enemy doesn't have much anti-air, play to whatever the enemy is neglecting, force them to adapt to meet you cause if you are controlling the beat of the game you are far more likely to win.
    Again, everything in the video is good rule of thumb, but you need to think about your situation and figure out what is going to give you actual impact. Sometimes having high numbers will win you the game, and sometimes you can hold off a legion with a skeleton crew at a choke point so you can force a situation elsewhere.

  • @uFuqinwitme

    I'd like to add, in FoW predeployed versus/campaigns, protect your APCs. They are far more of a loss than on maps you can build. Doubly so if you've got Air/Sea units, their ammo and fuel becomes finite and you lose them when out of fuel.
    Also in FoW maps, moving units around and then cancelling the move without waiting causes them to use fuel. This is to prevent "scouting" entire forests and reefs etc to spot enemies with a single or few units. You can run air units and especially Submarines out of fuel very fast by doing this.

    Another base tip is which base you use, if you have one close to the enemy highly prioritize combat vehicles on it, leave the further back for fast moving or infantry. Even to the debateable disadvantage of base skipping
    Another good tip is explaining that artillery is always less useful when on the offense, you can counter attack by luring powerful vehicles to attack infantry or APC's and getting a powerful first shot with a prepositioned artillery unit, artillery shines on the defensive or choke points and you can fight Med tanks with infantry and Arty if you're good enough like me 😂

It can often make trying to sneak into your main base impossible if a indirect is cleverly placed in a city or forest (Depending on the map state) so long as it's supported by an APC and isn't out on the front lines. If your using Grit you can even play chicken with your Super CO power and keep your opponent guessing. I think I'm going to put a lot of focus into mastering them in the future since Area Denial is probably my favorite way to play Advance Wars.

    I love Advance Wars. One of my favorite series! I've only ever played the single player campaigns and a little war room stuff, though, and I had no idea there even was a competitive scene until your videos started popping up!
    If there's one thing I've learned from them..... it's that I have no interest in competitive Advance Wars. Like, at all. Not even a little bit. I do just fine at the campaign's, but like- while I don't totally forgo infantry, I don't make nearly as many of them as I apparently should, because like.... at a certain point it starts becoming a HASSLE. Making and moving that many units? It starts piling up real quick, and as matches progress I tend to focus more on making Big units, with a barebones amount of infantry for capping. "Make and move infantry on every single one of your bases every single turn" immediately seems like it'd suck all the fun out of the game for me.
    That said, even if I'm not interested in doing it myself- still been lovin' watching your stuff! It's cool getting so much insight into this stuff, even if I'm not interested in doing it myself.

    Got it on launch day, been loving it!
    I remember having a friend who only used Kanbei and Colin.
    So I started mostly using Sami and Grit because infantry, mechs, and indirect units did a surprisingly good job of shutting him down. No matter how hard Kanbei's medium and neotanks hit, a couple of rockets will waste it and it can only hit 1 unit.

    While I haven't gotten in to AWBW myself, Advanced Wars has always been something I love and i've fallen into these a few times (kid me loved Colin's Power of Money and never understood how good Gold Rush actually was). A lot of these tips seem simple but they're pretty easy to fall into.
    One tip to trying out new COs and a personal challenge im currently in the process of myself right now on the reboot: Try to beat every war room map with every CO at least once (it's harder than it sounds). While the CPU isn't the greatest practice against human opponents, it's hard to ignore just the amount of practice you get using different COs in different conditions. Obviously you wouldn't use Drake for example on a map where you'd deploy a lot of air units but he doesn't have to be played solely on a sea based map either, as he suffers no penalties for land units. There's also the aspect that some maps will absolutely punish you for a wrong move and can quickly go south if you play poorly and have an unfavorable CO.

    • @bvd_vlvd
      @bvd_vlvd ปีที่แล้ว

      You mean beating every war room map while using different COs, right? Not beat each map with every single CO? Because I like that advice, picking a good CO solves a third of your match. Although I wouldn't use Sonja in AW1 war room, ever. It's completely pointless

    • @Kalanin399
      @Kalanin399 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bvd_vlvd For the most part, yes, I mean while using different COs. My personal challenge is everyone, as unless you watch yourself, you could easily fall into a habit of always picking your main CO on every map and then 2 others, but i used to do at least 3 COs for every map. I do agree using Sonja is kinda pointless on the AW1 versions, as it's basically like playing Andy without the healing, but this advice I should have specified is mostly for the AW2 versions of the maps, as that's largely going to be closer to the version that AWBY for example is going to use.

      Why haven't you tried advanced wars by web though? Not only is it extremely competitive, but there are also casual matches on maps ranging from small ones to huge geographical maps where 10-14 players fight against each other, with all kinds of units going ham, and all kinds of COs going up against each other. Even if you wanna play only as Kanbei, you can select a map you like from the hundreds of maps available, set rules of your own such as unit count limits, banned units, CO bans and such, and make a match where players will join and you get to play against many other players on the map of your liking with your favourite CO. You won't get this anywhere else other than advanced wars by web. Also, you can take 6-7 days for each turn, it's not like you have to finish your matches in one sitting.

So if you're more than 7 squares away from an enemy base, you should be good.

    • @Posby95

    I feel like the one major failing of the AW1 campaign is that it doesn't effectively incentivize infantry for much of its run time. Too often the objectives are so unique that trickling out more men has little impact. On the one hand, this is good because you're going to run into varied and interesting encounters more often, on the other, it just does not properly train you for the later levels, the war room, or vs.

    • @Wintd1

    Yeah, I’ve been following you for a while, but I still feel very rough: a number of these mistakes I don’t think I make, but have follow ups that I probably do. Hope you don’t mind if I do a point for point reflection on my own play.
    1. Neglecting Infantry. I don’t do this, in that I try to keep building infantry; how to use them is a different story. Making sure to build them doesn’t mean much when the infantry walls that tend to overwhelm me are just alien to my own playstyle.
    2. Base Skipping. No notes, I don’t do this one unless I screw up cost calculations.
    3. Spamming Indirects. I actually started doing the opposite on AWBW. I absolutely respect them, but I often find tanks more called for than artillery. Then again, I think my playstyle is a bit…scattered (see point 1). Probably not good, especially not good for keeping indirects alive long enough to do anything. I should also note that Rockets have fallen out of my favor of late: again, still greatly respect their range, but their movement and defense are terrible.
    4. Spreading Forces Too Thin. Oh yeah, that’s the big one. Also hard wired in my brain at this point, gonna be hard and painful to fix this as it’s basically changing the entire core of my playstyle. Still, this is probably why I keep losing.
    5. Spamming Mechs. If anything, I’ve gone the opposite way, almost never building Mechs instead of infantry.
    6. Not Scouting. To be honest, I just don’t play FOW these days. It always felt like even if I did scout I’d just get jumped all the time. Not just in AWBW, In actual Advance Wars. Couldn’t really judge my own skill in FOW, over the fact that I simply don’t enjoy it.
    7. Only Playing One CO. Yeah, I don’t really do this either. In War Room I’d try to pick out the best CO for the map (most of the time that was Grit, granted), and I’m a fan of a good number of AWBW low tiers. There are some COs I appreciate but just don’t play though, like Olaf.
    8. Blindly Using CO Power. I think we’re all guilty of this from time to time, but I do try to put some thought into when it would actually be useful. That’s led to some funny matches on AWBW, like the mirror Hawke match where we each got a Black Storm off and then both just…never popped the second one. Basically a game of chicken that made it not worth it for either of us to pop. And then there was a recent game where I sat on Jake’s superpower because my opponent’s Grimm Knuckleduster just before ruined my chance to capitalize on it…and permanently shifted the match momentum so that I NEVER had that good time to pop my SP…
    9. Overextending. I’m not sure how often I actually do this, mainly because mistake 4 often punished me before I get the chance. I guess I do have a habit of specifically overextending my infantry to cap; I’ve even done this knowing they’d likely die, in hopes of distracting the enemy from more expensive units like tanks. Yeah, it’s becoming more and more obvious as I write this that I have no idea what I’m doing…
    10. Only Playing Against Friends. Straight up can’t. I play normal Advance Wars via emulator, so no link play or anything, all matches against humans have been through AWBW. Though yeah, between not being able to do AI exploits on an actual player and the fundamentally different design philosophy behind its maps, normal AW and AWBW are two very different experiences.

    Personal advice:
    Don't panic and retreat when the enemy starts rolling out medium tanks before you do! Sure, it's scary when medium tanks, or gasp, Neotanks barrel down the road, farting any opposition straight into oblivion, while your tanks can only scratch them. But fear not, as that's the moment for indirects to shine, especially cheap artillery. Try to lure the enemy big boi into range (bait needed), and watch how the mighty medium tank receives one serious pounding. From a 6.000 funds-unit. Immediately cost-effective. Build two artillery which is still 4.000 cheaper, and see how the enemy melts - if he won't just retreat himself. Only exception is Kanbei: if he does come with a Neotank at you, then you have probably screwed up pretty badly and deserve to lose.
    This was even mentioned in the AW1-tutorial, which was unfortunately removed in the reboot.

    1. Neglecting infantry
    2. Base skipping
    3. Spamming indirects
    4. Spreading forces too thin
    5. Spamming mechs
    6. Sending expensive units alone into the fog
    7. Playing just one CO
    8. Blindly using CO powers
    9. Overextending
    10. Only playing against your friends

    I only play vs the AI every now and then (campaign) but I definitely got better. Been playing AW1 campaign and managed to get an S every mission (except the final... forgot it counted only andy kills and I destroyed strum with, ironically, kambei). I used to make most of these mistakes. Never made infantry, didnt know about walling and how powerful it can be. Used powers to "not lose on possible future charge" and so on.
    Until i watched your AWBW vids I would never have guessed it was so competitive and interesting. its not about getting a bunch of MDs.
