Great video John, shame about having to strip it down again, but when you get the barrels back it will be good to go. Look forward to the rebuild John and hearing it running again. Cheers, Jeff.
Hi Jeff :-) it might of worked, I knew I was taking a chance with what I did just didn't come off this time. Should be great when I get the rebore back a proper full rebuild, and actually it's first!
A real pain stripping it again but you're made of the right stuff John - what a positive attitude! And at least we get a chance to enjoy watching you for a few more episodes. As always, thanks for posting.
Hi John,Really enjoyed the video,it's a very natural way of doing it,and your off the cuff remarks are are very natural and funny! Don't worry about the odd bit of silence,my Dad always said it was golden! Can't wait to see the barrel back and the continuing rebuild of your beautiful bike.,take care.
And that is the wonderful thing about the old Triumphs. Ya can tear the top end down and replace everything in a long afternoon. Great job Johnny. I especially liked the split frame videoing. God bless.
Hi Ed :-) I only removed around 5-10 minutes from real time. As I dropped a clanger with camera angle the split frame was needed, it was a right pain to try and sync in a fashion though. It would be good to use my two cameras but twice the hassle and half the space to work in :-D Thank you.
John, Hi again...It's Mike G from the States. I've actually taken down a 65 bonnie using your videos and have started the rebuild (over the past 2-3 years, taking my time). But this question is about the bike you're working on in this video. It looks like an OIF model, but I noticed it had push on exhaust pipes and you must have added an oil cooler at some point. My question is just what year/model is this bike?
Hi Mike :-) it's my bike I've had from the early 80's it's a 1972 T120R Bonneville though it is a different head it's always had stubs and push over pipe. I have fitted the cooler, remote spin on filter and Boyer ignition, and it is the OIF. I'm glad you find my vids handy best o luck with your rebuild. John
Thanks for taking the time John. I was a bit confused because I have several 72s but the only push on exhaust pipes with clamps are on my 65. All the 72s in the garage have push in, no clamps
John, from my experience It takes time for rings that had a bit of rust on the face to bed into different barrels. I would have given it a few miles before such drastic measures. Cheers, Andy
Hi Andy :-) If there had been a bit less smoke I would of given it a shot, that score down the barrel was the biggest decider. In the short time I did run it oil started dripping from left hand stub, in my estimation that was a lot of oil! Cheers John
Hi Andy :-) It did start ok I was pleased with that. Oil returned to tank normally once the line filled properly the two push rod tube fulls of oil was the amount the crank cash was primed with, so for me there was not too much oil in there. As most of the oil was on the left hand side I'll stick to poor rings and bore as the main problem.
That's a nice change to watch from further back, and it's all going backwards anyway (sadly) in prep for the other set getting done (this week? - will your man be doing them or is he backed up with work having been away). You'll be fed up at the couple of decent days we've had, by the time the barrels are done and on it'll be bloody raining again. It's a bit like me, it's only sunny when I'm at work! Anyway, I'm always delighted to watch an hour of you working on the bike. I've got the Enfield half stripped down for a deep clean, before putting her up for sale. Not a lot of work, but it gives me something to potter on with of an evening in the shed! Chat soon eh?
Hi Pete :-) He has a bit of a catch up, so hopefully the end of the week and I should be sorted. A couple of hours to put them back on and I should be away. Typical intit sunny days and I got me head off.
what size and compression ratio pistons are you going to use this time around?. whats the piston over size. what do you think is better, exaust pipes with or without the balance pipe across at the top? hope to hear from you on this, Jakob....
Hi Jakob :-) Pistons will be +20 and 9:1 compression, I prefer separate pipe exhausts and no balance pipe between the carbs, These mods (by Triumph) where used to improve the tick over. I like to treat the two sides as separate entities.

Hi jemglen :-)
that's the way it goes sometimes, more to come including a top end rebuild :-D

Glad you like em! thank you. You and me both for the return of the barrels.
Cheers

It seemed fine to start with, I assume the oil was returning to the tank, and that the engine was not just full of oil. Cheers, Andy

Hey it gives you a chance to repaint the exhaust clamps now. That's probably why it didn't work is she's pissed at you for not redoing her clamps :P
Hi Otis :-) you could be right there!
Maybe I should paint em this time, the barrels I have in the shop certainly need doing.
bit of a pain to have to do again ! still it keeps you out the pub !!
Hi Les :-)
It certainly does, but having a few bevies while waiting for my barrels to be done. :-D
