1910 Fruitgum Company "Simon Says" 45rpm

  • Original Buddah Records 45rpm recording.
    Song debuted on 1/27/1968 and peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It charted for 14 weeks and was the first hit for the Fruitgum Co. My dad was a big "bubblegum" fan when he was growing up in the late 60s and this is a song I grew up listening too as well.

    1968 in Panama Canal Zone in the Navy. There was a bar on Base called the Firecracker where officers and enlisted mixed within walking distance to main Admin building. At 1600 (4pm) the bar filled up and the jukebox blasted. When the crowd got to feeling good I would play this song three times in a row (three plays 25 cents) and the nurses and men would dance like crazy in dress whites. An unforgettable moment in time.

    We are living in very difficult times in 2022 - energy crisis, war in Ukraine.... it's really good to hear such nice feel-good oldies from years long past. I was born in 1967 and remember that my parents played "Simon Says" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company from a tape reel very often in the early 70s. I still love listening - greetings from Germany.

      It’s a great song, but when it came out in 1968, times really weren’t that different. We had riots in cities and the Vietnam War, for starters… the more things change, the more they remain the same.

      @@robby062 There was no energy crisis in 1968, but the underlying problem it caused, inflation was definitely also around in 1968, as a result of the 'guns AND butter' high deficit policies from the mid 1960s.' Inflation first crept up in 1966.

    On this day in 1968 {March 9th} the 1910 Fruitgum Co.* performed "Simon Says" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV Saturday-afternoon program. 'American Bandstand'...
    At the time the song was in it's first of four weeks at #4 on Billboard's Top 100, that would also be it's peak position on the chart, and it spent fourteen weeks on the Top 100...
    And on April 28th, 1968 it reached #2 {for 1 week} on the United Kingdom's Single chart, the week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "What A Wonderful World" by Louis Armtrong...
    Between January 1968 and August 1969 the New Jersey quintet had seven records on the Top 100, three made the Top 100...
    Besides "Simon Says", their two other Top 10 records both peaked at #5, "1,2,3, Red Light" for 2 weeks on September 8th, 1968 and "Indian Giver" for 1 week on March 16th, 1969...
    * And from the 'For What It's Worth' department, besides the Fruitgum Co. there was one other 'Co.' on the Top 100 in 1968, Cliff Nobles and Co. peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} with "The Horse", and for all three weeks it was at #2, the #1 record was "This Guy's In Love With You" by Herb Alpert...

    Thank you for posting this ORIGINAL version !! This is the version we heard on Top 40 radio in 1968. Every other version I've found online and on the Buddah Records Anthology has the "bah bah bah bah" chorus on the first verse, right out of the gate. Not sure why some record executive or producer decided to mess up this perfectly excellent original mix.

    • @marty3888
      @marty3888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think tht the version that has the "bah bah bahs" right from the first verse was the album version - that's how it was recorded. Someone from Buddah thought for the single let's take those out of the first verse and you're right - this sounds better Tommy James an the Shondells did that a lot too.

      @GarudaMan9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like many hit songs from the 1960s, different mixes were done for the mono single version and the stereo album versions. The labels still saw the mono 45 version as more important until maybe about a year after "Simon Says" came out, so they wouldn't mind if the (often younger and less experienced) engineers doing the stereo mixes made some minor changes. In some cases (example: Otis Redding's "Otis Blue" LP, with "I've Been Loving You Too Long" on it) the stereo version is an entirely different recording or an alternate take.
      The grand irony, of course, is that nowadays the stereo versions are the only ones compilation producers and often radio stations and TV will play.

      That shouldn't be too surprising. Considering that the Scooby-Doo soundtrack, especially the chase sequences had bubblegum pop songs playing. Bubblegum pop has become very syonymous with Saturday morning cartoons back in the 1960s and 70s.

      I was going to comment that actually because my perfect pitch was telling me that it's the same chord progression, only in 1969, the sd theme song was in Bflat and this song in 68 is in A... but then when the solo kicked in, the first few notes were the same rhythm and melody! Either way, great music and my generation lost the definition of great music!

    I was born in 1970. I listened to a lot of 60s music in the 1980s because I didn't like a lot of the hit songs at that time. I've never heard this before. It was featured in a rather creepy scene in the otherwise brilliant 1968 cinema verite documentary simply called "High School."
    Of course, there was nothing like the internet of today in the mid 1980s - the internet predated the world wide web- so, a person was restricted to songs on the radio (or on MTV, which wasn't different than the radio), or, if in a big city, the speciality record store, so had a been able to hear more of the British music at that time - The Smiths, The Cure, The Pogues, I probably wouldn't have listened to 60's music.

    This a original 1st. recording release. The later release have the Ba Ba right in the beginning. I like the later version . But over all this was one of the best songs for the year it was release. In my opinion.

    This gives me a great and feeling makes me want to play Simon Says. I first heard Claude Francois sing this song in French titled Jacques a Dit. I thought this might originally be sung in English and sure enough it was.

    The first song of what once was Jeckell & the Hydes,named after their former Lead Singer Frank Jeckell..they'd gotten their new name from an old Gum Wrapper,tucked away in a old suit in an attic,according to Mark Gutkowski,the Leadwho took over Jeckell's job.

      🕊 They printed so many of these 45's in the U.S. that when they couldn't sell any more , years later (discontinued) , a little hole was puched in them , by the label and put on a 'sale' rack .
      I paid ten cents for it along with a few others , like Four Seasons on Phillips label . That was in the very early seventies. 🕊🦅
