O novo direcionamento seria a base do futuro som do Sepultura. O grupo surgiu com a seguinte formação: Max (guitarra), Igor (bateria), Paulo Jr. (baixo) e Wagner Lamounier (vocal).[13] Após desentendimentos, Wagner saiu e formou o Sarcófago - banda de black metal que também se destacou no estilo extremo- e assim, Max torna-se vocalista e guitarrista, chamando Jairo Guedez para a segunda guitarra.[14] Em 1985, num festival de bandas em Belo Horizonte, a Cogumelo Records contrata a banda após o dono da gravadora ter visto um show. No fim do ano, saiu o debut do quarteto com o EP Bestial Devastation, gravado e produzido em apenas dois dias, que continha canções dos também brasileiros do Overdose. Apesar da baixa qualidade de produção, o EP rendeu bons frutos, que, somado a uma turnê de divulgação nacional, levou-os novamente aos estúdios para gravar um disco completo. Em novembro de 1986, é lançado Morbid Visions, primeiro álbum de estúdio e um dos primeiros discos de death metal/black metal do mundo. Vale ressaltar que, nessa época, os membros ainda eram adolescentes. Apesar do alcance restrito ao Brasil, a banda começava a ter reconhecimento na cena underground do metal, principalmente, devido ao surgimento de seu primeiro hit, "Troops of Doom". Desse modo, a banda muda-se para a capital de São Paulo. Schizophrenia e Beneath the Remains (1987-1990) Ver artigos principais: Schizophrenia e Beneath the Remains No início de 1987, Jairo Guedez deixa a banda, sendo substituído pelo guitarrista paulista Andreas Kisser, que já havia feito algumas jams com o grupo, e assim, lançaram o álbum Schizophrenia no mesmo ano, o último com a produção da gravadora Cogumelo.[15] O álbum refletiu uma mudança estilística: era mais orientado ao thrash metal, mas elementos de death metal do Morbid Visions permaneceram. A gravadora New Renaissance o lançou nos Estados Unidos. I heard there was an issue with Sodom. Max went without showering for the tour just to piss them off. If it was Venom too that's not surprising because even Venom didn't like each other. And there was the incident with Slayer and Venom where Cronos punched Tom because Tom was drunk and pissed on Cronos....okay that was Slayer's fault. Depois do Chaos AD o Sepultura já tinha perdido sua essência . E o Chaos AD foi um disco excelente , cada vez que escuto me surpreende pela originalidade . Mas aí eles "passaram do ponto" e mergulharam no som "Nu Metal" ao invés de manter o "Groove Thrash" daquele disco . Se tivessem mantido a linha teria sido legal , mesmo com outro vocalista ...
Sepultura hoje é uma banda foda, que felizmente não se conformou em simplesmente copiar sempre a mesma fórmula. Todos os álbuns sempre foram muito diferentes entre si, desde o começo. E o Max é um chorão pau mandado da mulher

That's Necromancer, that later was a song from Sepultura's Spit album Bestial Devastation. In the live album "Under a Pale Grey" of 1996 Sepultura played this one on what became Max's last show with them.
I debate whether this is authentic or not.. Simply for the fact that I have 'zines with interviews of the Cavalera brothers stating that Igor didnt have a bass drum until they had written Bestial Devastation, and even then he was learning. I can hear a kick drum in this. I question whether it is real.

I read somewhere Sepultura were not impressed with Venom's behaviour when they supported them on their Brazilian tour in 1986.
