    Thanks for showing me how glass is mastered!
    Edited to add: The production value here is great! The sound is good, the camera work is nice, and the commentary is interesting. Awesome!

    Shame you guys didn't keep the audio from the shop and simply fade it out whenever narration was necessary.
    I just like hearing the background noise of the shop while watching these videos.

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      +Glenn A Hi Glenn, we chose to only include the narration since we had music playing in the hot shop that has caused copyright issues on TH-cam in the past. Thanks for this feedback, we're continuing to work on the best scenario for both in the hot shop and what gets posted here on TH-cam and it's great to hear this feedback.

    The process used to make this piece has blown my little mind; especially the ridges and rings of the dragon's body. What an absolute master. There are a lot of comments about the end result; if you don't like it that's fine, but this video is about the astounding process, not just the sculpture at the end. Thank you for sharing this video, CMOG, it is truly inspiring.

    Definitely looks like an Italian dragon. People don't realize but dragons are very different in actual real world lore (fiction) compared to fantasy.
    Nordic dragons were usually wyrms or wyverns. And the old art isn't very pretty.

      @Gigaguenther 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Peteru Avertis the modern fantasy dragons aren't exactly made up on the spot neither...they just developed later, when dinosaur skeletons started to become more common in the peoples' minds. so you have to look at culture AND time. just a little "the more you know" for you there

    honestly, the only thing that bothers me (not counting the broken bottom

    Jim and crew, what an amazing job of team work including the narrator!
    Your dragon is an exquisite piece of art.
    If I were allowed to criticize,---- it would only be the eyes.
    Slanted or half lidded would have brought out more of the ferociousness the creature was during that time.
    Okay, I don't mean to be eccentric here but this is my art.
    I remember my past two deaths and return to Heaven and all the process entailed until coming back here (Earth).
    My biggest regret in Heaven is not spending enough time in the public (Heavenly) ARTS.
    Yes we have our own domains or Dominions but I wished I'd spent more time in the Heavenly (Public) Dominion.
    You Jim and others have awaken me to pay more attention to the ARTS that so proliferate Heaven in my next time around.
    THX SO much!

      It'd be fine. When glass is that hot (hot enough to be worked) it has a consistency somewhat similar to clay, but a firmer and resistant to change. The hotter it is the more malleable it is, so this comparison or simile is subject to a pretty wide range of variety. For the sake of discussion though, it's accurate enough.

      +Michael Angel This particular style of glass dragon has its beginning in styles set by designers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Artists have adapted their own variations and styles of fantastical animals and creatures, some of which have become the contemporary glassmakers' idea of the glass dragon. In short, the style of the dragon has roots in historical designs, but each artist can interpret that differently.

      +Milander just milander That's fine. If you don't like it, you don't like it. But realize there is more to life than what you like, and other people can love it. The person who posted this video explained the history of glass dragon sculpture, which explains why the dragon is formed the way it is. My suggestion would be you not buy this sculpture, since you clearly don't like it.

    I'm a little surprised at the negative comments on the style of the dragon. Being as this is a mythical creature AND this is "art"...I would think people would understand that any dragon made is open to the artist's interpretation. Fascinating work being done here!

    This is amazing!!!! Does the glass ever get over heated or is it possible for glass to be burnt?

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Great question. Here's the answer from our Chief Scientist Glen Cook:
      Burning is, by definition, a chemical reaction where a fuel combines with oxygen, changing it into new, “burnt” stuff, and in the processes gives off enough heat to keep the burning happening.
      Wood or paper or other things that were alive will burn, with the oxygen from the air turning, say, the wood into carbon-rich ash, as well as carbon dioxide gas and water vapor.
      Metals can burn, like magnesium in fireworks, giving off intense heat and white light, as it turns into a chemical called magnesium oxide.
      But glass is made of chemical compounds that already include a lot of oxygen: silicon dioxide, sodium oxide, and calcium oxide, for example. In a sense, glass is already “burned” - at some time in the distant past, perhaps even before our solar system formed, the silicon or sodium or calcium combined with oxygen in the heat of an exploding star!
      So the additional heat we use to melt the glass, enough that masters like Jim Mongrain can turn it into beautiful things, only makes it move and flow. It doesn’t, and can’t burn it, any more than it already is.

      It took 30 years to get that good, the cost mentioned was for a full goblet, lid, and topper, and those would take a lot longer to make than the fifty minutes for the topper. That's also only the gross cost. The materials (Glass, oven, tools, kiln, brace, rod, etc.) would seriously reduce that gross cost. All in all, that's a relatively fair price for this sort of work.

    Why do they keep heating with the torch

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Shaping on the pipe occurs in the 1500°-2100º F range, 800°-1150º C, so they are heating it to keep the glass in that temperature range. If it gets too cool, it will crack and fall off.

    • @corningmuseumofglass
      @corningmuseumofglass  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Marauder Great question, the style of the glass dragon has its beginning in styles set by designers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Artists have adapted their own variations and styles of fantastical animals and creatures, some of which have become the contemporary glassmakers' idea of the glass dragon. In short, the style of the dragon has roots in historical designs, but each artist can interpret that differently.

      Ah, e se vc entender inglês, o que provavelmente não pela sua atitude, o cara acima explica o porquê da aparência, vou te explicar para vc não precisar abrir o tradutor e quebrar a cabecinha oca.
      o dragão teve o estilo definido por artistas nos seculos 16 e 17 (XVI & XVII), eles colocaram suas próprias variações e estilos de animais e criaturas de fantasia. algumas ideias até mesmo vieram de artistas contemporâneos, ou seja o dragão tem raízes histórias na sua arte... Ta ai mastigadinho para o bebê que acha que eu tentei ofender.
      Apenas me interessei pelo estilo do dragão e perguntei. "Esta traduzido do meu jeito"

    • @TheDraghon1
      @TheDraghon1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Em suma o dragão pode varias dependendo do artista, ele pode até fazer um dragão parecendo um bode, do jeito dele, assim como os artistas antigos o "inventaram" aderindo coisas que queriam.... não precisa ser exatamente sempre aquela coisa com garras e escamas e dentes afiados como no game of thrones ^^

    Started off strong, but starts going down hill as soon as the head is formed. While from a craftsmanship standpoint, this is fantastic, from an artistic standpoint it looks scattered and unattractive. The head looking like a dragon/chicken hybrid takes a lot away in terms of impressiveness, and the arms being so smooth and tubular while the rest of the piece has distinct ridges and angles frankly look silly. Also, the wings look horribly generic and, like the arms, look like they were taken from a different piece and just kinda slapped up there, like the wings on the keys in Harry Potter. The worst offender, though is DEFINITELY the eyes. He kinda just did the glass equivalent of slapping a pair of googly eyes on it and calling it a day.

      Dritto1010 I will not deny that it does look like a 16th-17th century Italian dragon. My point, however, is that this piece, and in turn16th-17th century Italian dragons, look scattered and unattractive.
