    Keith,
    You're pretty good at that "banjo pickin'".(LOL) It's good to see the old girl get a fresh coat of pain, some oil and grease, and assembled. I would imagine you are anxious to start making chips (and I don't mean the corn or potato variety). Thanks for the video!
    Have a good one!
    Dave

    LaBlond certainly didn't cheat on the change gear material, Torque!!! Looking forward to seeing it run. Looks like you could give Adam a run for his money!

    you might want to think about hanging flags, or banners, from your ceiling to knock back some of that sound reverberation we're getting now. lots of them.

      he had a few dings when putting it together anyway, he mentioned once having to touch up , i guess theres just a little more still. one big advantage of brush painting vs spray!

      I got a bit too close to the machine with the wire wheel. I still have to do a touch up on several places with paint so it will get a new coat there.

    hi Keith, another great video on the lebonde lathe restoration! also seeing you with full grown beard, you look like the "Trapper John M.D. (hope you recall that TV medical show starring Pernell Roberts (of Bonanza fame)) of the machine shop... and in a way you are a "doctor" of machines by repairing them and making them great again! please keep up the great videos and may all of 2017 be a very healthy, fun, prosperous, and glorious for you and all of your family and loved ones.

    Love watching the rebirth / refurbishing of a fine old American machine, a piece of American industrial history really. Keith do ya know what the commenters are talking about some needle bearing you didn't grease / oil, is it lubricated by the machines oiling system? Just want you to have top results.

    • @VintageMachinery

    was anyone else worried he wasnt going to lube that needle bearing? i sure was

    • @joshonthetube
      @joshonthetube 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think i still would have packed it before installing it, just because it was so clean- it should eventually get grease in everywhere from the zerk, but I don't think i'd want to rely on that for initial startup..

    • @schorse1000
      @schorse1000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's an oiler at the end of the shaft, so you can lube it with an oil press.

    The two small gears need lube, grease or oil on the back side between the shims and housing.

    I have been following this restoration from part one. The lathe is looking really good; I think you are doing two great jobs here at once. The first job is the actual restoration, and the second one is the documenting thereof. One question - something was different in this video. New mic? A helper with the camera? Or am I imaging things...

  • @jonka1
    @jonka1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Given the very high humidity in the air do you not think it would be good to oil each thread and shaft and other push fit parts before assembly? When you took this all apart it was easy because everything was oily. Are you not risking the formation of rust which will store up trouble for you or the next owner in the future for the sake of a moments thought?

      Go back and watch some of the earlier videos in this series - all of that is discussed. But, it is a Sherwin Williams oil based enamel and I brushed it on - which is how I like to paint cast iron. Spray is better for smoother surfaces like sheet metal though.

  • @mechfeeney
    @mechfeeney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Keith, why did you leave backlash in the gears? Does it not matter?

    • @mechfeeney
      @mechfeeney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chester Woodward I think I agree with you, though a film of grease is much smaller than the backlash shown in the video. What is that drive train for? Threading?

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to have a little bit of wiggle or the gears will freeze up over time from too much friction. And, once they are loaded and moving, it takes all the backlash out. No problem here. Backlash can be excessive but you can't have them too tight either.

  • @barrybeggs8543
    @barrybeggs8543 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why didn't you use anti seeze compound the spindles before assembdy?

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it didnt seize in the last 50 years with having a bit of oil on it, it wont seize now

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think anti-seeze is over used. This is going on a lathe that will stay in a machine shop. It will be well oiled and cared for. If it were going to be outside or in a rough environment, that would be different. I did not have problems getting anything apart on the machine, and I assure you that it did not have anti-seeze on anything when it was built.

  • @buzzsawncgo2751
    @buzzsawncgo2751 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm enjoying the LeBlond restoration. You do have one thing that that you do that make me cringe every time I see you do it. Please understand, I'm literally one of those folks who can be accurately described as knowing just enough to make me dangerous but every bit of the formal training I've had (admittedly very little) has stressed that transfer of natural body oils from skin etc through touching metal parts bare handed when assembling them is a bad thing. Your habit of spreading oil on dissimilar metals with bare fingers goes against every bit of instruction I've had. I'm now wondering whether the cautions I was taught were justified or not. Would you share your thinking about the advisability of doing that?

    • @VintageMachinery
      @VintageMachinery  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am quite sure that some academic out there would argue your point to death, but in my opinion I just cannot see where it will ever make a bit of difference in the long run.

      most heavy old iron sells for its scrap value on its sticker weight, theres many floating about but few with the means to move them or want to restore them, so fewer exist each year. youd need to be a machinist to have the resources to move/restore and use them but most machinists have newer lathes as they need to earn money, it would be like a taxi driver buying a vintage car. so in reality its a few passionate either retired or those with day jobs that pay enough to afford it.

    • @antmallett6065
      @antmallett6065 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      BigRalph I don't think it's about the possible monetary gain. Some people have passion that exceeds remuneration - for whatever it is they are doing. Having said that - if an average joe watches TV for 3 hours a day, would anyone ask him how much money his TV watching was earning him? Spending 3 hours a day on a given project / passion is likely to give almost immeasurably better results in anyone's life, than 3 hours in front of the TV...

      _"I don't think it's about the possible monetary gain"._
      Never said it was. I'm fully cognizant of Keith's motivations for restoring this machine (and the others he restores).
      Don't assume the motivation behind a question. Especially in a YT comment section.
      In this case, you mistook simple curiosity for something else entirely because you tried to read something in to it that wasn't there.
      I should not have had to explain myself to you just for asking Keith a question.
      Annoying. :/
