    Remember how Nightmare is actually Raphael in this game & Viola is also Amy, and not only does this get 0 mention in story mode, but the only way you'd know the former was if you took off his helmet in creation? Or how literally every characters backstory save for the protags are never explained in game, so you'd never know things like Xianghua's kids are actually half-siblings, Natsu is possessed by a demon that Taki failed to kill, Astaroth in this game is actually a mass-produced model made from the corpse of the original's death in 4, and plenty more.
    Instead, the focus are on a pair of twins so bad, one of the plot points in SC6 (Cassandra's story, specifically) is trying to PREVENT them from being born.

      @@oLucasElder the way she knows how to prevent it is because she fought with her original timeline version (which was trapped in astral chaos) and therefore tries to take Sophitia's role in protecting others, and why you ask? Because if she doesn't, she'll fail in saving her sister, and having their family broken into pieces (just like her og timeline version).

      I'm so happy to know other people know this. As a Raph main I loved the story take of him being Nightmares next host, considered he's why Sieg was freed in the first place. Dramatic irony

      There is a fanfiction story called "Raphael Sorel's Endless Warfare" written by ThalieXVII. It tells the story of how Raphael lost Amy and searched for her even through his possession as Graf Dumas and Nightmare. Calling it a fanfiction may be a disservice as the story follows both the canon and true historical events incredibly faithfully. It has the length and quality writing of a professional novel. The ending takes a different route from the canon but a bit of a more appropriate one if you ask me. This story isn't just another head canon put on paper, but the work of someone who did an incredible amount of research and it deserves all the readers it can get.

      That's a proud tradition for Yoda in any PvP game.
      Fucker was a nightmare in OG Battlefront II. Half the time he didn't even kill you, he just force pushed and pulled you until someone else killed you or him.

    I'll never forget SCV for killing Sophitia offscreen, arguably the original hero of the franchise. That could have been at least a heartbreaking cinematic at the start.

    I actually enjoyed playing Soul Calibur V for the creation feature alone. I had a lot of fun recreating anime characters and fighting against each other. 😅

    It's insane to think how different the series could've been if SCV was given another 5-6 months in development.
    I loved playing the game, but only for the character customization and online private lobby system. That shit was super fun with friends to see what kind of ridiculous/cool stuff we could come up with.

    Dead or Alive 6 would be a great fighting game for wha happun, considering it's rushed and bad story mode, nonsensical and inconsistent tone down of the fanservice, lack of modes from previous entries, bad DLC and stopping getting support after only 1 year while the gacha Xtreme spin off for PC has been getting updates for 4 years now, and it's director quit Koei Tecmo some months ago as the cherry on the cake.

      @@asianjackass237 Not really. Most of the problems are from Team Ninja/KT decisions. Not having online lobbies at launch while also announcing a $100 season pass (because priorities right...). Not having the tag mode from previous games. The stupid unlocking system for costumes. Post launch even had the stupidity of charging real money to change hair colors even for colors you already paid for, so I guess it was more like renting colors, instead of the in game currency that anybody still playing at that point probably had nothing to use on. Most of the problems of the game just come off as the game only existing to continue DOA5’s DLC campaign. Heck, one of DLC characters for 6 was one that was DLC for Last Round.

    What's awesome about Soulcalibur 6 is that they incorporate some of 5 parts into the story. So they managed to bring it back I hope the series will continue on

    SoulCalibur 5 was probably one of my biggest gaming disappointments. The new characters felt tacked on, the combat felt weirdly floaty and the main story was boring. Sophitia will always be my main, so following her kids could have been cool, but they were whiny and dull. I honestly thought SoulCalibur would never come back.

    An entry so underwhelming that people forgot it even came out. Too bad because it had a good guest star, Ezio. Which fits better unlike other entries.

    Positives: Ezio Auditore was an amazing addition and literally the reason I bought the CE.

    There are many things you can say about SC5, but the thing that I always remember it for is getting me into the band Lazy Habits because of the promo Namco had them do. "Bulletin" playing to that mural of Pat facing off against Nightmare will never leave my mind.

    I never knew SC5 had this many issues because my friends and I loved it. It was the only Soul Calibur game we were into though, so all of the issues with the characters didn't affect us.

      Add KOF 2001 to the "Wha Happun?" pile as well! That game has an interesting (more like wasted) history behind it's development stemming from SNK's bankruptcy and the plans SNK had for the game that sadly never got implemented. Not just that, but when SNK got to continue doing the series again for KOF 2003, some things from 2001 were removed from canon as well.

    It's funny that Patroklos is said to be a clone of Sophitia but his fighting is actually not like his mom's. In fact, the one that is most like Sophitia in fighting style is his sister Pyrrha.

    I like how Cassandra addresses the events of SCV as "the bad ending" in her story mode in SCVI.
    To be fair, the game was decent, I played a lot back then (online mostly), but the lackluster and super short story mode was a bummer for me. Also, the lack of offline modes and small roster of fighters are worthy of criticism. The core gameplay was good and every character played differently (except the mimics ofc), so I don't consider it a failure, but everything that came before and even after (looking at you SCVI) is so much better in everysingle way.

    Literally the other day I was thinking if you were gonna do SoulCalibur V!
    I'm almost ashamed to say that I didn't mind Patroklos and Pyrrha that much but they were definitely a downgrade from Sophitia, Cassandra and Setsuka. Xiba was kinda fun but also a downgrade over Kilik...
    But...
    Natsu and Leixia were much more interesting than Taki and Xianghua imo 👀

    Here in Italy, Gamestop got a deal that they gave uou Dompierre if you preordered the game with them. I did it. They gave me the wrong edition. They basically gave me a super exclusive edition, that came with an enciclopedia that explained the backstory for all character and other gadgets that were contained in a book--like gamebox. Among this gadgets there was a funko pop-like statue of Ivy. It took so much space on my shelf until I decided to put them in a box. I spent 93 € for a 2 and a half hour game that didn't feature Dompierre. It traumstised me so much that I decided to buy as little phisycal games as possible.

    The funny thing is I'm part of the Soul Calibur 6 modding community and aside from Patroklos, people actually enjoyed the newer characters, not just Z.W.E.I.
    People have worked hard to bring back characters like Natsu and Pyrrha
    This just really shows to me that the characters themselves weren't entirely at fault, just their environment
    Z.W.E.I. especially just got nipped in the bud before he could even grow as a character because of how rushed the game was
    Hell, I feel like I'd like them so much more if they were able to be whole characters like Grøh and Azwel

    The Soul Blade intro used at the end, was beautiful. Soul Blade/Edge was the best fighting game I played.

    Not only the roster, they also cut the returning character move sets by at least a third of what they had in SCIV and then they hid the remaining fun moves behind an energy bar system :( It just wasn't as fun anymore.

    I hated Soulcalibur 5 because of its character roster. I get they were trying to pull a Tekken 3 by having a time gap in the story and replacing all the characters. This concept was terrible because Soulcalibur had already established its iconic and recognizable characters. It made no sense why they did that

    I got a good way to bring back Patroklos in Soul Calibur 7. His story begins with him as a little kid having the dream of becoming a renowned adventurer after being inspired by the embellished adventuring stories of his father but due to being clumsy with bulky weapons, his dad has the town blacksmith call upon a friend to help import a concealable sword that's easy to use so the dad can help cheer up Patroklos into following his dream.
    Years pass and we come across a scene: we see two bodies on the ground and a spearman holding onto his wounded stomach resting by a tree calling the mysterious figure putting loads of coins into his pockets a backstabbing murderer before the spearman gets kicked in the wound and we get a look at the mysterious figures attire. He has a leather chestpiece on top of common clothes and the noticeable thing we see about him is that he has greaves and gauntlets but they look rusted and covered in dried blood, the figure also talks back to the injured man making himself sound like a common hero who "defended himself from bloodthirsty ruffians" before pulling out a bounty paper that shows that the spearman and the wanted bounty look nothing alike before the bounty gets facial hair sketched on to make it look like the bounty forgot a missing detail. We then hear a scream and get a cutaway to a Bounty Hunter Guild with the guild leader being suspicious because the bone structures don't match but assumes that it's just nothing and pays the man who walks out the door in a gray cloak covered in blood who removes the hood to reveal the identity of the figure: they're Patroklos, a stoic cold-hearted man that got hit with the hard reality of adventuring after him and his father got taken advantage of by seasoned adventurers who were only in it to make money.
    After spending some gold at a inn for the night, he ends up overhearing about the legend of Soul Edge from a merchant that just hired a bodyguard talkin about how the weapon has the power to make anyone's dream come true before the merchant decides to take the conversation outside after noticing that some people are trying to listen in. Patroklos then slowly sneaks his way outside to listen to the full story before backstabbing the guard and stops the Merchant from trying to call for help by giving them a decision: to hire him to help find Soul Edge and replace the dead bodyguard or end up found drowned in the nearby river.
    It would be a good way to bring back Patroklos and have him as a character who's only motivation of getting Soul Edge is to be a renowned hero no matter how many people he steps over which could build him up with the should have been a antagonist protagonist look that he had in Soulcalibur V when he basically stabbed a commoner that was unfortunate to look really pale.

    Straight up, in spite of all the beef and problems that i can agree with when it comes to story and newcomers, SCV still means a lot to me for the amount of time i had put into it and the amount of fun i had too being the first Soul Calibur i played

    I think Soulcalibur 6 must have had an interesting development cycle as well, and while it turned out much better than 5, I get the feeling things were rough behind the scenes. There seem to be artifacts from an older story idea that found their way into the game. Namely, that Groh seems to have been a time traveler at some point in previous drafts of the story, as evidenced by his uncanny knowledge of story events and the modern/futuristic elements of his costume. There’s also all the matter of all the story chapters that are just huge blocks of text. Soulcalibur is no stranger to overindulgent world building (I could spend hours reading the character bios and weapon histories in previous games), but it’s usually separate from the actual story; a nice bonus for those who want to know more. SC6 has character stories that are just explanations of the plot, without any actual gameplay. In addition, there’s unlockable supplemental reading, that further explains the same events. It kinda feels like they didn’t have the time or budget to add additional story events, so they wrote a bunch of exposition instead. I dunno, it’s a game I really enjoy, but it feels slapped together at times. At least there’s something to use your custom fighters in.

    It's weird that Mitsurugi and Kilik didn't aged in SCV, in Ivy's case that's justified: Due to her Malfestation, she stops aging in SCIV.

      It wasn't because of her malfestation tho, she made an alchemical potion or something like that. Then Cervantes killed her and the potion made effect reviving her or something like that keeping her soul young.

      He will get to it eventually it is just a matter of time that has filled the games he has mentioned in previous episodes. As for an opinion as to why Umbrella Corps failed lack of story mode same as Mercenaries 3D. Resident Evil has always been story focused so multiplayer experiences are either hits or misses when it comes to the fan base.

    My most vivid memory of Soul Calibur is when I got Soul Calibur 2 on the original PlayStation. Taki had an animation where she did a back handspring and resheathed her sword behind her back. I was introduced to jiggle physics as a 12 year old. Needless to say, she was my favourite character.

    Devil Jin style, CAC, and me being able to play any audio from my ps3 in the background were the best things about V. As much crap as SC4 gets, I'd fight and say that it was better in quality and was aesthetically a much *cooler* game.

    Soulcalibur is easily one of my favorite fighting games and I'm real happy that 6 helped Breathe new life into it despite everything that happened
    I kind of hope Dead or Alive 6 is next, I've been staying away from it because I keep hearing it has so many problems , I really like 5 so I hope they just do a ultimate addition at some point to fix whatever's wrong

    I remember thinking Soulcaliber peaked at 3. Absolutely love that game, main story and the custom character story. 4 I forget was a game despite playing it a lot. 5 felt really half baked and the combat for the 2 main characters felt clunky to me. Difficult to control.

    I played the Soul Reverse game for a few weeks when I was in Japan back in 2018. Basically you can create a character, select a class, and then jump into a match. Each match has teams of 4....5....(?) players where the teams have their own base and neutral points. The point is to capture and hold the points so that your army gets stronger (each side has an army constantly running at the other side) and you can hopefully take out the other team's base.
    As for gameplay, the game plays pretty smooth, each character has multiple different attacks and they can also get a super "ult" ability. Normally you'll see all of the players fighting in the middle next to a neutral point. This is normally because one character is "over leveled" for the match they're in making it so they're essentially a raid boss.

    I am surprised that you did not mention Ezio’s inclusion. Even a line like "Despite Bandai Namco's attempt to ride off the success of Ubisoft’s Assasins Creed franchise, by including Ezio Auditore as a guest character. It was still not enough to garner additional sales for Soul Calibur V, which only sold a mere 'X'".

    This series was my crack for years beginning with soulblade. SC and SC2 were fantastic, but SC3 for me was the gem. As a fan it was perfection. The series broke my heart from 4 onwards.

    I loved the character customization in SoCal 5, my dream is to produce a martial arts fighting game with a similar CAF system. I was working on character designs for the main cast that would each represent a different discipline ( boxing, muay thai, ect) and then for CAFs you could select a base style or a hybrid that would use moves from each style

    The bigger sin of this game was probably less introducing a next generation of brand new fighters, and far more so which members of that new generation were given the spotlight and pushed as the new faces of the franchise.
    I mean, I get that they were going a redemption arc story with Patroklos, but there are ways to make character working for wrong wrong side while still keeping them empathetic and relatable, whereas Pat, Pat is just the kind of arrogantly self-important douche you want to punch in the face so hard and he doesn't get much better even after he ostensibly reforms midway though the story since he just ends up an inadvertent pawn of other sword's "light is not good" twist.
    On top of all that, Pyrra wasn't any better of a secondary lead, going from helpless shrinking violet to axe crazy murderer post transformation.
    Neither of there's are characters that couldn't work as part of the roster, they were just poor choices to make the focus of the new generation. Really having such a biased focus on just two characters was probably the biggest mistake. Previous entries were always ensembles, with each character getting pretty much equal focus (in the actual gameplay at least, if not the marketing), and if they didn't have time to give everyone a spotlight in the story mode, they probably should have scrapped even having a story mode and just stuck with the old genre standby of giving everyone an arcade style ending, along with maybe some unique intro/outro dialogue between specific fighters to flesh out their relationships to each other.
    SC5 isn't so much a bad game as it's a game with too much ambition that lacked the support or resources it needed to follow through.

    I was able to pick up a copy of SCV about a year after it came out for $10. Honestly, I had more fun using create a character and making up my own story with them than I did playing the game itself

      @@sunlitsonata6853 From what I've heard, there were a ton of script changes to the game that forced developers to make new art assets to fit with the changes, they had to hire film animators because they couldn't find any to animate for games, high turnover rates that meant that none of the old employee's could help new ones, and let's not forget the content leak that happened a couple months before the game came out.

    Love learning how my favorite series screw themselves and inevitably end up on “What Happened”. Ever since SC2 I’ve had a soft spot for the series, but it really was just not up to par once they got to this iteration.

    I feel like what gets lost in the hype around esports is that it’s only good for marketing, not actual sales. Most who buy fighting games are casual players who want meaty single player content and the option to play online against friends and strangers. So while it’s important that the core mechanics of the game are amazing and nailed down pat, it’s also important that story and arcade modes are robust and fun. This is why SC6 is so amazing by not only giving each character their own story and doing an arcade mode but making your OC have a point by giving them a DnD campaign style mode to play around in, allowing for fun interactions with the world, lore, and characters.

    It's fine to push on with new ideas but it is a gamble if it's a timeskip that nearly wipes out key rostering cast (some since the first game) with a "new generation".
    Either it can work and bring new life to the franchise, or alienate the fanbase. Not helped was the story with just uninteresting illustrations, and nothing much to support the two new leads.
    I think what they did was too drastic a change. Would it had been better to introduce new characters earlier in the series, (and if things go intended and become popular) let them phase out the characters who took the story as far as it can go and over 2-3 games you have your "new generation" established?

    To be fair to the Alpha/Omega character's defense, they do have different movesets. A-Pat's is pretty obviously just Setsuka, but it begs the question of why get rid of her in the first place, and why in the world give that moveset to Patroklos anyway?

    I still really like most of the gameplay design choices from this one. Natsu was way more annoying than Taki, but her rushdown and combo game was way better, and I was actually pretty disappointed with how clunky SC6's Taki felt on release. Xiba was actually a pretty good update to Kilik's style that cut down on the range but added in a lot more mixups and counter-offensive options. Even Patroklos and Pyrrha felt like the ideal distillations of their counterparts' fighting styles: Patroklos with the pure balls-out rushdown and Pyrrha with the more cautious poke-and-punish gameplan. It all just worked really well for me.
    But god they were obnoxious to listen to. If not for custom characters I don't think I would have survived.

    In Ivy's defense though, she is an alchemist and stop her aging process at the age of 32. So of course she wouldnt look old no matter how much time passed. In the SOULCALIBUR VI trailer for 2B, Ivy is the connection to 2B a gazillion years in the future because of that, hence she says "My old life is dead to me" in the trailer.

    Being honest, I do like V. I know the single player content is slim but the character creation is one of the best and me and my friends enjoyed a lot playing the arcade mode to unlock new items in the character editor. I personally never cared much into the lore of any fighting game so many "story modes" into fighting games were ignored by me and in Soul Calibur in specific I always liked the setting more than all the characters besides Ivy. I enjoyed VI and I think it is easier to recommend than V but the character editor is slightly worse in this entry on purpose just to sell these items as DLC (V had a lot of cosmetic DLC too but they were kinda little gags and reference, whereas on VI the editor feels incomplete without the DLC)

    Was there even a character creator? Sc3 had the best Character creator. With unique (albeit busted, especially katana) fighting styles. Why didn't they polish that more than push a gimmick like star wars characters?

      There was a character creator for sure in 5, and definitely they brought it back for 6. They’re actually relatively good in both 5 and 6, it’s one of the less controversial bits for both games.
